Over- and underestimation of motor ability after a stroke: Implications for anosognosia.

We administered a discrepancy-based measure of anosognosia for hemiplegia (AHP) to a group of 42 right-brain-damaged (RBD) and left-brain-damaged (LBD) stroke patients with varying levels of functional motor ability. In addition to the expected (anosognosic) pattern of overestimation of motor function in some RBD patients, we found an equal and opposite underestimation in some others, both RBD and LBD. We also found that around a quarter of self-estimation error could be predicted directly from actual ability, such that patients with poorer motor function tended to overestimate, and vice versa

The influence of mood on the jumping to conclusions bias in individuals with schizotypal traits: an experience sampling paradigm.

The jumping to conclusions bias (JTC) refers to making a decision before collecting a sufficient amount of information to warrant doing so. … ivity of experimental tasks to increase data quality. Overall, identifying the influence of mood on metacognition is critical in determining how JTC functions within the illness.

A proof of concept study on digital interventions for reducing socio-evaluative stress and anxiety in youth.

Youth often struggle with heightened sensitivity to social judgement, increasing their vulnerability to fear in social situations. This stud … delivered a public speech after a 12-min video intervention. We assessed subjective anxiety levels, metacognition, heart rate variability (HRV), and subjective and objective performance ratings throughout the experiment. Results indicated that the slow breathing intervention significantly increased HRV immediately after the intervention, during the public speak …

Perceived Self-Efficacy in Decision-Making: The Influence of Personality and Cognitive Variables.

OBJECTIVE: Decision self-efficacy reflects individuals' confidence in their ability to make effective health-related decisions. In oncology, it is essential to foster active engagement throughout the healthcare journey. Despite its relevance for quality of life, limited evidence exists on the factors influencing decision self-efficacy among cancer survivors. This exploratory study examined the role of personality traits, metacognition, coping strategies, and social support in predicting decision self-efficacy in breast cancer survivors. METHODS: 187 breast cancer survivors voluntarily complet…

The long-term effects of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy as a relapse prevention treatment for major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is a relapse prevention treatment for major depressive disorder. METHOD: An observat … lation between rumination and mindful attention (p < .001), consistent with a proposed mechanism of metacognition in the efficacy of MBCT. CONCLUSION: It is suggested that ongoing MBCT skills and practice may be important for relapse prevention over the longer term. Larger randomized studies of the mechanisms of MBCT with longer follow-up periods are recommend …

Cognitive Aspects of Generalised Anxiety Disorder in Adolescents: Exploring Intolerance of Uncertainty, Cognitive Avoidance, and Positive Beliefs About Worry.

Intolerance of uncertainty, cognitive avoidance, and positive beliefs about worry have been well researched in adults with Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), but few studies have explored these aspects in adolescent clinical samples. To address this gap, we compared the three cognitive variables amongst 12-18 year-olds with diagnoses of GAD (n = 46), those with other anxiety disorders (n = 18), and a group with low self-reported anxiety (n = 38). Adolescents with GAD reported significantly higher intolerance of uncertainty and positive beliefs about worry relative to their peers with other an

Hearing "Quack" and Remembering A Duck: Evidence for Fluency Attribution in Young Children.

Previous research has suggested that fluency does not influence memory decisions until ages 7-8. In two experiments (n = 96 and n = 64, respectively), children, aged 4, 6, and 8 years (Experiments 1 and 2), and adults (Experiment 2) studied a list of pictures. Participants completed a recognition test during which each study item was preceded by a sound providing either a highly predictive or mildly predictive context in order to make some test items more conceptually fluent. Overall, highly predictive items were recognized at a higher rate than mildly predictive items demonstrating an earlier

Perfectionism unbound: An integrated individual and group intervention for those hiding imperfections.

The tendency to hide and mask suffering and one's perceived imperfections is one of the biggest obstacles in treating those with prominent perfectionistic traits. In this single case, we present an integrative form of psychotherapy for patients with recurrent strategies aimed at neither displaying nor disclosing their perfectionism. Emily was a 26-year-old woman diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder and reported a personality pathology as diagnosed through the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders. The intervention comprised of a 4-month individual therapy and 2-month group therapy. Th

Brain Emotion Systems, Personality, Hopelessness, Self/Other Perception, and Gambling Cognition: A Structural Equation Model.

The aim of this study was to explore the relations between gambling, brain emotion systems, personality, self/other perception, and hopelessness in an Italian community. Dimensions of gambling, positive and negative emotions, self/other perception, personality and hopelessness were assessed in a community sample of 235 adults aged 19-59 years. Two structural models were tested. We found a significant correlation between problem gambling and impulsivity, which in association with aggressivity and negative personality dimensions may help explain the psychopathology factor, i.e. a latent variable

Cognitive stimulation of executive functions in mild cognitive impairment: specific efficacy and impact in memory.

Executive functions play an important role in the maintenance of autonomy in day-to-day activities. Nevertheless, there is little research into specific cognitive training for Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). We present the results of a program which aims to teach specific strategies and metacognitive abilities in order for patients to be able to carry out attentional and executive tasks. Two groups (A and B) were compared in a cross-over design. After the first evaluation, Group A (but not B) participated in a six month cognitive stimulation program. After a second assessment, only Group B re

A randomized controlled trial on the effectiveness of a rumination-focused group treatment for residual depression.

The maintenance of residual symptoms following acute treatment is common and is associated with poor long-term prognosis. This study investigates whether a cognitive-behavioral group treatment is effective in reducing residual depression by targeting depressive rumination. Participants (N=60) were randomly assigned to either the group treatment or a wait-list control condition. Treatment significantly improved depressed mood, rumination, perceived control over rumination and dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs compared with the wait condition. Treatment gains were maintained over the follow-up

Tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) states: retrieval, behavior, and experience.

The tip-of-the-tongue state (TOT) is the feeling that accompanies temporary inaccessibility of an item that a person is trying to retrieve. TOTs have been studied experimentally since the seminal work of Brown and McNeill (1966). TOTs are experiences that accompany some failed or slow retrievals, and they can result in changes in retrieval behavior itself, allowing us to study the interplay among experience, retrieval, and behavior. We often attribute the experience of the TOT to the unretrieved target, but TOTs are based on a variety of cues, heuristics, or sources of evidence, such as partia

Interpreting the WISC-R subtest scores of reading impaired children--a structural approach.

The problem of characterising more specifically the cognitive requirements involved in subtests from standardised measures of intelligence represents a main problem in the research on exceptional populations. A new way of classifying tests of mental abilities is presented. Rather than focusing on the content of a given test, the present classification system focuses on their structures. The classification system is applied to the WISC-R (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children--Revised, Wechsler, 1974). It will be used to interpret the IQ-profiles of a clinically defined sample of reading imp

Cognitive-Communication Rehabilitation after Brain Injuries.

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) provide communicative and cognitive rehabilitation for people with brain injuries, and this article describes current assessment and treatment after a brain injury. Cognitive problems can affect attention, concentration, and memory, as well as metacognitive skills to self-monitor, control, and adjust one's thinking. Speech-language pathology (SLP) rehabilitation is initiated in acute inpatient settings and then through a continuum of inpatient rehabilitation, skilled nursing facility, home care, and outpatient settings. Speech-language pathology helps adults

The functional brain favours segregated modular connectivity at old age unless affected by neurodegeneration.

Brain's modular connectivity gives this organ resilience and adaptability. The ageing process alters the organised modularity of the brain and these changes are further accentuated by neurodegeneration, leading to disorganisation. To understand this further, we analysed modular variability-heterogeneity of modules-and modular dissociation-detachment from segregated connectivity-in two ageing cohorts and a mixed cohort of neurodegenerative diseases. Our results revealed that the brain follows a universal pattern of high modular variability in metacognitive brain regions: the association cortice

The intertwined path of perfectionism and self-criticism in a client with obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.

Psychotherapy for obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD), where perfectionism is a defining criterion, is understudied. Despite a high prevalence few evidence-based treatments are available for the presentation. Here we describe the course of a 6-month program of metacognitive interpersonal therapy with an OCPD patient with prominent perfectionism and self-criticism, which were considered primary outcomes of the case study. Therapy aimed initially at increasing awareness of maladaptive interpersonal schemas and promoting a healthy self. First, behavioral experiments were used to try

Confidence drives a neural confirmation bias.

A prominent source of polarised and entrenched beliefs is confirmation bias, where evidence against one's position is selectively disregarded. This effect is most starkly evident when opposing parties are highly confident in their decisions. Here we combine human magnetoencephalography (MEG) with behavioural and neural modelling to identify alterations in post-decisional processing that contribute to the phenomenon of confirmation bias. We show that holding high confidence in a decision leads to a striking modulation of post-decision neural processing, such that integration of confirmatory evi

No-loss gambling shows the speed of the unconscious.

This paper investigates the time it takes unconscious vs. conscious knowledge to form by using an improved "no-loss gambling" method to measure awareness of knowing. Subjects could either bet on a transparently random process or on their grammaticality judgment in an artificial grammar learning task. A conflict in the literature is resolved concerning whether unconscious rather than conscious knowledge is especially fast or slow to form. When guessing (betting on a random process), accuracy was above chance and RTs were longer than when feeling confident (betting on the grammaticality decision
