A Wearable Bioimpedance Chest Patch for IoHT-Connected Respiration Monitoring.

This paper presents a wearable sensor patch with real-time respiration monitoring by measuring the change in thoracic impedance resulting from breathing. A bioimpedance (BioZ) sensor with two sensing electrodes is employed to measure the chest impedance. In addition, a medical-grade infrared temperature sensor is utilized to detect body temperature. The recorded data is transmitted via a Bluetooth module to a computer for online data computation and waveform visualization. The breath-by-breath breathing rate is calculated using the time difference between two BioZ signal peaks, and the results

Monitoring dialysis adequacy: history and current practice.

Dialysis adequacy for pediatric patients has largely followed the trends in adult dialysis by judging the success or adequacy of peritoneal or hemodialysis with urea kinetic modeling. While this provides a starting point to establish a dose of dialysis, it is clear that urea is only part of the picture. Many clinical parameters and interventions now have been identified that are just as impactful on mortality and morbidly as urea clearance. As such, our concept of adequacy is evolving to include non-urea parameters and assessing the impact that following an "adequate therapy" has on patient li

Infant Facial Expression Analysis: Towards a Real-Time Video Monitoring System Using R-CNN and HMM.

The manual monitoring of young infants suffering from diseases like reflux is significant, since infants can hardly articulate their feelings. In this work, we propose a video-based infant monitoring system for the analysis of infant expressions and states, approaching real-time performance. The expressions of interest consist of discomfort, unhappy, joy and neutral, whereas states include sleep, pacifier and open mouth. Benefiting from the expression analysis, the discomfort moments can also be used and correlated with a symptom-related disease, such as a reflux measurement for the diagnosis

Assessment of Registration Methods for Thermal Infrared and Visible Images for Diabetic Foot Monitoring.

This work presents a revision of four different registration methods for thermal infrared and visible images captured by a camera-based prototype for the remote monitoring of diabetic foot. This prototype uses low cost and off-the-shelf available sensors in thermal infrared and visible spectra. Four different methods (Geometric Optical Translation, Homography, Iterative Closest Point, and Affine transform with Gradient Descent) have been implemented and analyzed for the registration of images obtained from both sensors. All four algorithms' performances were evaluated using the Simultaneous Tr

Voxyvi: A system for long-term audio and video acquisitions in neonatal intensive care units.

BACKGROUND: In the European Union, 300,000 newborn babies are born prematurely every year. Their care is ensured in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) where vital signs are constantly monitored. In addition, other descriptors such as motion, facial and vocal activities have been shown to be essential to assess neurobehavioral development. AIM: In the scope of the European project Digi-NewB, we aimed to develop and evaluate a new audio-video device designed to non-invasively acquire multi-modal data (audio, video and thermal images), while fitting the wide variety of bedding environment in N

Characteristics of Neonates with Cardiopulmonary Disease Who Experience Seizures: A Multicenter Study.

OBJECTIVE: To compare key seizure and outcome characteristics between neonates with and without cardiopulmonary disease. STUDY DESIGN: The Neonatal Seizure Registry is a multicenter, prospectively acquired cohort of neonates with clinical or electroencephalographic (EEG)-confirmed seizures. Cardiopulmonary disease was defined as congenital heart disease, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, and exposure to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. We assessed continuous EEG monitoring strategy, seizure characteristics, seizure management, and outcomes for neonates with and without cardiopulmonary dise

Spectral Reflectance Can Differentiate Tracheal and Esophageal Tissue in the Presence of Bodily Fluids and Soot.

Endotracheal intubation is a common life-saving procedure implemented in emergency care to ensure patient oxygenation, but it is difficult and often performed in suboptimal conditions leading to high rates of patient complications. Undetected misplacement in the esophagus is a preventable complication that can lead to fatalities in 5-10% of patients who undergo emergency intubation. End-tidal carbon dioxide monitoring and other proper placement detection methods are useful, yet the problem of misplacement persists. Our previous work demonstrated the utility of spectral reflectance sensors for

Digital Health in Cardiac Rehabilitation and Secondary Prevention: A Search for the Ideal Tool.

Digital health is becoming more integrated in daily medical practice. In cardiology, patient care is already moving from the hospital to the patients' homes, with large trials showing positive results in the field of telemonitoring via cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs), monitoring of pulmonary artery pressure via implantable devices, telemonitoring via home-based non-invasive sensors, and screening for atrial fibrillation via smartphone and smartwatch technology. Cardiac rehabilitation and secondary prevention are modalities that could greatly benefit from digital health integrati

Usual and Advanced Monitoring in Patients Receiving Oxygen Therapy.

Respiratory monitoring in patients receiving oxygen therapy for acute care is mandatory at the initial stage of in-hospital management given the potential risk of clinical worsening. Although some patients benefit from close monitoring in the ICU, the vast majority of them are managed in general wards with reduced staff and clinical supervision. The objective of monitoring is to detect early clinical deterioration, which may help prevent in-hospital cardiac arrest. In addition to the clinical and usual evaluations (eg, breathing frequency, breathing pattern, oximetry, and oxygen flow requireme

Validation of the suppression ratio from a simplified EEG montage during targeted temperature management after cardiac arrest.

AIM: The Suppression Ratio (SR) estimates the percent of the electroencephalography (EEG) epoch with very low voltage, and is associated with neurological outcome after cardiac arrest. We aimed to compare the SR generated by two monitoring devices and determine the association between SR and patterns on amplitude integrated EEG (aEEG) and full conventional EEG (cEEG). METHODS: Consecutive adult patients treated with TTM after cardiac arrest were enrolled. We compared the SR from the Medtronic Vista monitor (MSR) to the SR generated from the full montage cEEG with Persyst Magic-Marker software

Prediction of the onset of parturition in horses and cattle.

Economic losses due to dystocia or neonatal death as well as animal welfare and ethical concerns demand a reliable prediction of parturition with the aim to improve survival of the dam and her offspring. In this review, estimation of gestational age by ultrasound and prediction of parturition based on clinical signs, behaviour changes and changes in body temperature, composition of mammary gland secretions as well as hormonal changes are discussed in comparison between horses and cattle. Based on the physiological changes associated with the end of gestation and onset of labor, several systems

A Smart Band for Automatic Supervision of Restrained Patients in a Hospital Environment.

Mechanical contention (MC) is a restrictive, vital but controversial measure, prescribed in the majority of EU countries to handle patients with psycho-motor agitation that do not respond to other types of intervention, with an imminent risk of physical violence and aggression involved. This last resort approach implies risks for the somatic health of the contained individual that go from trauma injuries to, in some extreme cases, sudden death. Despite these risks, somatic supervision and the monitoring of patients under MC is limited, being periodically and manually carried out by nursing per

Combined Surgical Approach to Young Adults with Hip Dysplasia and Concomitant Intra-Articular Pathology Using Intra-Abdominal Monitoring.

BACKGROUND: Combined hip arthroscopy and periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) allows for treatment of intra-articular hip pathology with simultaneous correction of acetabular version and femoral head coverage in patients with symptomatic hip dysplasia. Currently, scant data is available to surgeons regarding optimal technique, sequence of repair, perioperative management, and the use of intra-abdominal monitoring in patients undergoing these combined procedures. The purpose of this study is to describe a two-surgeon, muscle-sparing, approach for sequential hip arthroscopy and PAO for the treatment o

Technical note: validation of a system for monitoring individual behavior in beef heifers.

The objectives of the 2 studies conducted were to validate the accuracy of an automated monitoring device (AMD; HR-LDn tags, SCR Engineers Ltd., Netanya, Israel) for different types of behaviors or cow-states (side lying, resting, medium activity, high activity, rumination, grazing, walking, and panting) in beef heifers and to determine if the total time per cow-state recorded by the AMD corresponds to the total time per cow-state recorded by instantaneous observations. Cow-state is recorded every second and, within 1 min, the most prevalent cow-state is considered to be the behavior presented

FORMATION OF EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF ENDOGENOUS CARBON MONOXIDE AND INCREASE OF CARBOXYLATED HEMOGLOBIN CONTENT IN PATIENTS WITH POLYTRAUMA.

There are serious conditions for increasing the production of endogenous carbon monoxide (CO) in patients with polytrauma. Any damage to the cell membranes under conditions of traumatic injury, shock, acute respiratory failure, destruction of the blood cells against the background of hemorrhages, blood transfusions, and blood reinfusions can contribute to the enhancement of products. The purpose of the study was the investigation of endogenous CO production in the body of patients with polytrauma by determining the percentage of carboxylated hemoglobin (HbCO%) in the blood using photoplethysmo

24-hour Intraocular pressure monitoring: the way ahead.

Aim: Large diurnal intraocular pressure (IOP) fluctuation is a single most independent risk factor for glaucoma progression besides raised IOP. The major limitation of Goldman applanation tonometer (GAT) is its inability to measure night IOP without disturbing the patient's sleep. We discussed the methods available for the 24-hour IOP monitoring and its relevance in glaucoma. Methods: A PUBMED search was performed using the 24 Hour tonometry, newer tonometry devices, contact lens sensors, as keywords and all relevant articles were studied. Results and Conclusion: A number of methods are availa

[Use of capnography in the emergency department].

In Denmark, capnography is routinely used in monitoring patients with artificial airways. Non-invasive capnography is occasionally used by prehospital providers, but not applied inside hospital walls. Multiple studies illustrate benefits from capnography in non-intubated patients. Non-invasive capnography may reveal altered ventilation in conditions such as opioid-induced respiratory depression and acute dyspnoea, during metabolic acidosis and among patients with seizures and cerebral damage. Implementation requires education, guidelines for inhospital use and financial investment.

Anesthesia and Monitoring of Animals During MRI Studies.

The use of imaging represents a major impact on the refinement and the reduction of in vivo studies in animal models, in particular for allowing longitudinal monitoring of the onset and the progression of disease within the same animal, and studying the biological effects of drug candidate and their therapeutic effectiveness. But the use of imaging procedures can affect animal physiology, and the need to anesthetize the animals for imaging entails potential health risks. During anesthesia, there is an inevitable autonomic nervous system depression which induces cardiovascular depression, respi

A custom made interface to integrate recording of pulse rate and blood pressure during urodynamics investigations.

Patients with a spinal cord injury above the 6th thoracic vertebrae may be prone to autonomic dysreflexia (AD) in response to bladder stimulus associated with a urodynamics investigation. It is essential that these patients are managed carefully in the urodynamics clinic in order to prevent life-threatening hypertension and bradycardia. Part of this management is the measurement and manual recording of pulse rate (PR) and non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP), alongside the standard urodynamics data set. The purpose of recording these additional data is to identify the characteristic drop in PR a
