Standardized questionnaires were administered to all crewmembers immediately following Space Shuttle flights by NASA flight surgeons. An object moving against a textured background is accurately perceived when viewed foveally, but when viewed peripherally the object's perceived direction of motion may deviate from veridical by as much as 90 deg. The illusory direction is oblique to the orientation of the background contours, which may themselves be moving or stationary. In several experiments, we examined the boundary conditions for occurrence of the illusion and tested hypotheses concerning its basis. This illusion of perceived direction dramatizes differences in motion processing between the fovea and the periphery.

Continuous passive motion (CPM) was used to maintain or gain hip and knee range of motion in 18 postoperative or postinjury pediatric orthopedic patients. Continuous passive motion was started in the early postoperative period and augmented with physical therapy. The device was well-tolerated in 16 of the 18 patients. In all but one, motion was improved with a progressive decrease in joint pain. In these patients, CPM was found to be a valuable tool in rehabilitation, and did not interfere with traction, open wounds, nursing care, nor external fixation devices.

Loss of ankle movement is a complication of severe tibial fractures. This can be exacerbated if the foot is allowed to drop into equinus, particularly when an external fixator is employed. The range of ankle motion following external fixation of tibial fractures as compared to the opposite normal ankle was studied in 40 of 55 patients treated over a ten-year period. Nine were excluded due to other causes of ankle stiffness, leaving 31 cases for analysis.
