Motion sickness (MS) was frequently introduced for rodents in research work through passive motion that disturbed vestibular signals in the presence of visual and aleatory, proprioceptive inputs. Inducement of MS in this way causes conflicting signals that activate intermixed neural circuits representing multimodal stimulation. From reductionism, a lab setup to elicit rat MS via vestibular stimulation was configured in the present study for MS study in connection with dissection of the central vestibular component causally underlying MS. The individual animal was blinded to light with a custom…

Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is a well-known side effect of virtual reality (VR) immersion, with symptoms including nausea, disorientation, and oculomotor discomfort. Previous studies have shown that pleasant music, odor, and taste can mitigate VIMS symptomatology, but the mechanism by which this occurs remains unclear. We predicted that positive emotions influence the VIMS-reducing effects. To investigate this, we conducted an experimental study with 68 subjects divided into two groups. The groups were exposed to either positive or neutral emotions before and during the VIMS-provok…

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness occurs worldwide in healthy individuals regardless of age, ethnicity, or gender. It is an acute disorder; it can also present as a chronic disorder in some individuals. Motion sickness not only includes vomiting and nausea, but also includes other features such as pallor of varying degrees, cold sweating, headache, drowsiness, increased salivation, and cranial pain, which are severe. Some of the other assessment scales can interpret sickness on exposure to virtual or visual stimulation and while travelling in different types of transport.
AIM: The aim of our resear…

INTRODUCTION: Motion sickness is a feeling of unwellness and introduces a significant safety risk. If a specific questionnaire to screen for motion sickness susceptibility is available, it would have benefit for susceptible people. This aimed at examining test-retest reliability and internal consistency of the Thai, non-English version Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire Short-Form (MSSQ-Short).METHODS: The original English-version MSSQ-Short was translated into Thai and then had a backward translation into English. The process of forward and backward translation was repeated until fu…

Doses of naloxone far below those which elicit emesis increase the sensitivity to motion sickness. In order to evaluate the possible interaction with broad spectrum antiemetics, low doses of naloxone were tested alone and in combination with 8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-propylamine)tetralin (DPAT), fentanyl and the NK1 antagonist CP-99994. A modified autonomic symptom rating scale was unaffected by any drug and thus considered of little value. Fentanyl and NK1 antagonists decreased the duration of the retch/vomit sequence. Naloxone alone and in combination with each of the drugs increased the duration of…

Low-dose dexamethasone has been widely used for the prevention of nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy and surgical procedures and to treat motion sickness due to its minimal adverse effects, but the mechanisms underlying its anti-motion sickness effects are poorly understood. Previous studies have demonstrated that the endocannabinoid system is suppressed by motion sickness but stimulated by dexamethasone. The aim of the present study was to determine whether dexamethasone has an anti-motion sickness effect in rats and to elucidate the mechanism of this action. We used HPLC-MS/MS to measure…

Motion sickness is caused by exposure to unfamiliar motions and typical symptoms of motion sickness include nausea and vomiting. To observe the metabolic and hormonal differences between nausea/vomiting (NAV) subjects and non-nausea/vomiting (NNV) ones, and to understand how the differences in metabolites and hormones affect the tolerance of organism to acceleration, 60 volunteers were exposed to repetitive acceleration using a 6-degree-of-freedom ship motion simulator. Meanwhile, 36 rats were randomly divided into three groups: an acceleration model group (n=14, exposed to acceleration), insu…

INTRODUCTION: Airsickness affects many aviators, especially at the beginning of their flight training. From the symptoms of airsickness, stomach awareness and nausea are among the most common and unpleasant. Helicobacter pylori infection of the gastric mucosa is a common cause of gastrointestinal symptoms in the general population, although it has seldom been associated with motion sickness in the scientific literature.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted in all cases of pilot trainees taking basic flight training who were referred to the Hellenic Air Force Aeromedical Center due to…

Field of view (FOV) is said to affect visually induced motion sickness. FOV, however, is characterized by an internal setting used by the graphics generator (iFOV) and an external factor determined by screen size and viewing distance (eFOV). We hypothesized that especially the incongruence between iFOV and eFOV would lead to sickness. To that end we used a computer game environment with different iFOV and eFOV settings, and found the opposite effect. We speculate that the relative large differences between iFOV and eFOV used in this experiment caused the discrepancy, as may be explained by ass…

BACKGROUND: In tilting trains, low-frequency lateral and roll oscillation combine and can cause motion sickness. During a journey, passengers are exposed to motions of varying magnitudes, but the effect of a change in magnitude on motion sickness is not known. It was hypothesized that the rate of increase in motion sickness would be greater during exposure to a high-magnitude motion than during exposure to a low-magnitude motion and that there would be no difference in sickness between motions when the 'motion sickness dose value' was the same.
METHOD: At intervals of at least 1 wk, 20 subjec…

The present work was designed to establish a novel animal model for motion sickness (MS) in rodents and to evaluate the effects of a combination of scopolamine and modafinil on MS with this novel method. It was found that the rats and mice presented several symptoms induced by rotation such as, piloerection, tremble, urinal and fecal incontinence. As the rats and mice are lack of emesis response to rotation, we used a score based on abovementioned symptoms as an index for the severity of MS in rodents. MS index was determined in 260 mice with this novel method. It was found that the distributi…

In children, vasovagal syncope (VVS) is the most common cause of syncope and motion sickness (MS) is also very frequent, with many symptoms of an autonomic nature. To study a possible relationship between VVS susceptibility and MS susceptibility in young patients, 21 children (10 boys, 11.3+/-2.6 years) with recurrent syncope or presyncope were explored with a questionnaire concerning their vasovagal symptoms, susceptibility to MS and familial history. A tilt-table test and a dynamic posturography with Equitest (Sensory Organisation Test (SOT), in six conditions) were performed. Children were …

INTRODUCTION: Research suggests that preflight training in virtual reality devices can simulate certain aspects of microgravity and may prove to be an effective countermeasure for space motion sickness (SMS) and spatial disorientation (SD). It is hypothesized that exposing subjects preflight to variable virtual orientations, similar to those encountered during spaceflight, will reduce the incidence and/or severity of SMS and SD.
METHODS: Subjects were assigned to either a variable training (VT) or nonvariable training (NVT) condition to perform a simple navigation and switch activation task i…

In the present study, we investigated the effect of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and 5-HT receptor agonists and antagonists on motion sickness in Suncus murinus, and the possibility that the emetic stimulus of 5-HT can alter the sensitivity of the animals to the different emetic stimulus of motion sickness. 5-HT (1.0, 2.0, 4.0 and 8.0 mg/kg ip) induced emesis and that was antagonised by methysergide (1.0 mg/kg ip), the 5-HT(4) receptor antagonist sulphamate[1-[2-[(methylsulphonyl)amino]ethyl]-4-piperidinyl]methyl-5-fluoro-2-methoxy-1H-indole-3-carboxylate (GR125487D; 1.0 mg/kg ip) and granisetro…

This study investigated the effects of navigation speed on the level of motion sickness during and after a 30-min head-steered virtual environment. Root-mean-squares for 8 speeds in the fore-and-aft axis were 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 24, 30, and 59 m/s. Participants were 96 Chinese men. Both the nausea and vection ratings increased significantly with speeds increasing from 3 m/s to 10 m/s. At speeds exceeding 10 m/s, the ratings stabilized. Navigation speeds were found to significantly affect the onset times of vection and nausea but did not affect their rates of increase with duration of exposure. For…

We examined the effects of amygdala lesion (AL) or hippocampal lesion (HL) on hypergravity-induced motion sickness in rats. Rats do not vomit, but the behavior known as pica, the eating of non-nutritive substances such as kaolin, can be used as an index of motion sickness. In the present study, hypergravity-induced kaolin intake and apomorphine-induced kaolin intake were measured before and after brain lesions. After AL, hypergravity-induced kaolin intake and the ratio of the hypergravity- to apomorphine-induced kaolin intakes were decreased. These results indicate that AL suppressed motion si…

Motion of visual scene (optokinetic stimulus) projected on a wide screen frequently induces motion sickness. Rotational movements of 3D visual images were analyzed to examine what factors are effective in visually-induced motion sickness and how the gravity contributes to its inducement. While an angle of a rotational axis of 3D visual image from the gravitational direction and its angle from the subjective vertical which was perceived by viewers through 3D visual image were varied, the severity of visually-induced motion sickness was measured.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of different frequency and amplitude of horizontal movements to induce motion sickness and to identify gender differences and adaptation to motion stimulus in adult Suncus murinus. Each animal was subjected to a horizontal motion stimulus of 3, 7, 13, or 40 mm amplitude at a frequency of 0.5, 1, 2, or 3 Hz. The number of vomiting episodes and the latency of onset were recorded over a 10-min period. For the study of adaptation, different groups of males were exposed to repeated motion sickness (using 0.5 or 1 Hz frequency and the amplit…

BACKGROUND: Low frequency linear (translational) oscillation is an important stimulus in provoking motion sickness in a variety of modes of transport.
HYPOTHESIS: Lower frequencies of horizontal linear oscillation would be more nauseogenic. The somatogravic illusion (SGI) would be affected by frequency.
METHODS: Subjects (n = 12) were exposed to horizontal sinusoidal motion (3.6 m.s-2 peak) at three different frequencies (0.205 Hz, 0.350 Hz, 0.500 Hz) at one week intervals, with order randomized between subjects. Subjects were seated in the upright position, with motion through the X head bo…
