Pre-pregnancy BMI and gestational weight gain: determinants of birthweight of term neonates in central Sri Lanka, a low-middle-income country.

BACKGROUND: Pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) is increasing across South Asia, yet maternal underweight also remains a persistent public health concern. Low birthweight (LBW) of newborns too remains a challenge amidst high maternal BMI. Understanding the impact of maternal BMI and gestational weight gain (GWG) on offspring weight is clinically relevant in the setting of double burden of malnutrition, which is underexplored in low-income populations, creating a research gap. METHODS: This prospective cohort study was conducted at Teaching Hospital Peradeniya, Sri Lanka on 1537 pregnant women

Effects of prenatal exposure to air particulate matter on the risk of preterm birth and roles of maternal and cord blood LINE-1 methylation: A birth cohort study in Guangzhou, China.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have found that increased risk of preterm birth (PTB) is associated with higher prenatal exposure to PM10 and PM2.5, but few studies have been conducted to assess the impacts of extremely fine particulate matter (PM1) which may have more toxic effects than other types of ambient particulate air pollution (PM). Several studies have separately investigated the associations between DNA methylation and PTB risk and PM. Maternal LINE-1 methylation level negatively correlated with prenatal exposure to PM and risk of PTB. A comprehensive picture is lacking regardin

Associations between hypothyroidism and adverse obstetric and neonatal outcomes: a study of a population database including over 184,000 women with hypothyroidism.

BACKGROUND: Maternal hypothyroidism has been associated with multiple adverse pregnancy outcomes. These findings have not been confirmed in a large population database study. Therefore, a large population-based cohort study was established to study the associations between maternal hypothyroidism and pregnancy and perinatal complications. METHODS: This is a retrospective population-based cohort study utilizing data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project-Nationwide Inpatient Sample (HCUP-NIS) over 11 years from 2004 to 2014. A cohort of all deliveries between 2004 and 2014 inclusive,

Gestational exposure to metals and small vulnerable newborns: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Small vulnerable newborns (SVNs), defined as babies affected by preterm birth (PTB), small for gestational age (SGA), or low birth weight (LBW), face a substantially increased risk of chronic diseases over their lifespan and premature mortality. Gestational exposure to heavy metals may play a role in the aetiology of SVNs. Although previous limited systematic reviews have examined individual metal(loid)s and single SVN outcomes, their findings remain inconclusive. Given the recent surge in studies, the use of diverse biospecimens, and the narrow scope of prior search strategies, ou

Sex-specific association between placental inflammatory cytokine mRNA expression and preschoolers' behavioral development: The Ma'anshan birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Placental inflammation may contribute to brain abnormalities and childhood neuropsychiatric disorders, but limited knowledge is available on the association of placental inflammatory cytokine levels and offspring's behavioral development. This study aimed to examine the sex-specific association between placental inflammatory cytokine mRNA expression and preschoolers' behavioral development. METHODS: 3474 pregnant women were recruited as the initial study population in the Ma'anshan birth cohort (MABC) study. Placentas (n = 2519) were collected during childbirth, and the mRNA expre

Obstetric and neonatal outcome of ART in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome: IVM of oocytes versus controlled ovarian stimulation.

STUDY QUESTION: Does IVM of immature oocytes retrieved from small antral follicles in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) have an impact on obstetric and neonatal outcomes compared to controlled ovarian stimulation (COS)? SUMMARY ANSWER: Obstetric and neonatal outcomes after IVM appear to be similar to those after COS. WHAT IS KNOW ALREADY: Women with PCOS have an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes and congenital malformations in their offspring. For patients with PCOS who require IVF, IVM of germinal vesicle (GV)-stage oocytes retrieved from antral follicles has been adopt

Gestational diabetes mellitus and its association with newborn thyroid screening: a population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) affects maternal-fetal metabolism, but its impact on neonatal thyroid function remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the association between maternal GDM and total thyroxine (TT4) levels in newborn screening (NBS) and to identify contributing maternal and neonatal factors. METHODS: This observational cohort study linked national NBS thyroid data with hospital medical records. The cohort included 101,450 mother-infant dyads, comprising 4,643 GDM and 96,807 non-GDM singleton pregnancies with term liveborn offspring. Maternal GDM status was

In-utero stress and mode of conception: impact on regulation of imprinted genes, fetal development and future health.

BACKGROUND: Genomic imprinting is an epigenetic gene regulatory mechanism; disruption of this process during early embryonic development can have major consequences on both fetal and placental development. The periconceptional period and intrauterine life are crucial for determining long-term susceptibility to diseases. Treatments and procedures in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) and adverse in-utero environments may modify the methylation levels of genomic imprinting regions, including insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2)/H19, mesoderm-specific transcript (MEST), and paternally expres

A review of dairy food intake for improving health among black infants, toddlers, and young children in the US.

Adequate nutrition is paramount for proper growth and musculoskeletal, neurocognitive, and immunological development in infants, toddlers, and young children. Among breastfeeding mother-child dyads, this critical window of development, is impacted by both maternal and offspring dietary patterns. For mothers, their dietary patterns impact not only their own health and well-being, but also the nutrition of their breast milk - which is recommended as the sole source of food for the first 6 months of their infant's life, and as a complementary source of nutrition until at least 2 years of age. For

The effect of customization and use of a fetal growth standard on the association between birthweight percentile and adverse perinatal outcome.

BACKGROUND: It has been proposed that correction of offspring weight percentiles (customization) might improve the prediction of adverse pregnancy outcome; however, the approach is not accepted universally. A complication in the interpretation of the data is that the main method for calculation of customized percentiles uses a fetal growth standard, and multiple analyses have compared the results with birthweight-based standards. OBJECTIVES: First, we aimed to determine whether women who deliver small-for-gestational-age infants using a customized standard differed from other women. Second, w

Pregnancy outcome post renal transplantation.

BACKGROUND: The success in performing organ transplantations and prevention of rejection has resulted not only in a substantial increase in life expectancy, but also improvement in the patients' quality of life. Thus, women who underwent organ transplantation are now reaching puberty and the age of reproduction. This has presented new challenges regarding the teratogenicity and the long-term effect of immunosuppressive medications used by these patients. Previous studies have shown that pregnancies after renal transplantation are associated with an increased risk for both the mother and the fe
