Recent studies have concluded that athletes have increased risk of musculoskeletal injury following sport-related concussion. While an underlying explanation is still unknown, perceptual-motor control may be implicated in this increased risk. Some authors have purported that indirect perception (i.e., a "top-down" view of neuromuscular control) may be disrupted following sport-related concussion. Direct perception theory states that the athlete and environment are inextricably linked in a continuous perception-action coupling loop. That is, the athlete is able to directly perceive opportunitie

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal involvement in melioidosis is often seen in conjunction with a disseminated illness. Recent reports suggest that operative management of musculoskeletal melioidosis has favourable results. The purpose of this study was to review the patient profile and clinical outcomes of Burkholderia pseudomallei infection in the musculoskeletal system.
METHODS: Hospital records of 163 patients who were diagnosed to have B. pseudomallei infection between January 2009 and December 2014 were reviewed. Patients underwent surgical and nonsurgical management depending upon the tissue …

Bone mass and skeletal muscle mass are controlled by factors such as genetics, diet and nutrition, growth factors and mechanical stimuli. Whereas increased mechanical loading of the musculoskeletal system stimulates an increase in the mass and strength of skeletal muscle and bone, reduced mechanical loading and disuse rapidly promote a decrease in musculoskeletal mass, strength and ultimately performance (i.e. muscle atrophy and osteoporosis). In stark contrast to artificially immobilised laboratory mammals, animals that experience natural, prolonged bouts of disuse and reduced mechanical load…

Musculoskeletal conditions are increasingly common with advancing age. The life expectancy increased early and rapidly in Sweden, and today 17% of the population is over age 65. Musculoskeletal problems are therefore common but in general are receiving low attention, despite enormous costs for society. The indirect costs for musculoskeletal conditions vastly exceed direct costs (80% vs 20%). This is obviated by the fact that in 2001, of all persons receiving disability pension or taking longterm sick leave, 60% had a diagnosis related to the musculoskeletal system. Further, in a population of …

The musculoskeletal system involvement of tuberculosis (TB) other than spinal TB is a rare and less-known entity. Furthermore symptoms of musculoskeletal involvement of TB infection are non-specific, relatively slow and indolent. The diagnosis of TB is less considered by clinicians among other common causes of shoulder pain including traumatic and degenerative conditions. We reported a 72-year-old patient suffering shoulder pain for the last 2 years who was diagnosed with glenohumeral joint TB arthritis associated with multiple cold abscesses in adjacent soft tissues; emphasising significant c…

The association of musculoskeletal disorders and genitourinary symptoms is reviewed. Reactive arthritis, Sjögren's syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis can present with a variety of genitourinary symptoms. Similarly sexually transmitted diseases including gonorrhoea, syphilis, HIV and other viral infections can affect the musculoskeletal system. Reiter's syndrome may be a consequence of a sexually transmitted infection although its presentation can suggest that also in post-dysenteric cases. The fact that conditions may present to various medical specialties requires doctors outside departments o…

Chondrodysplasia punctata is a multisystem disorder, primarily involving the musculoskeletal system, skin, and eyes. Children with the rhizomelic form of this syndrome have characteristic facies with a saddle-nose deformity, hypertelorism, and frontal bossing. The musculoskeletal changes include proximal limb shortening, flexion contractures, congenital hip dislocations, and the characteristic radiographic finding of epiphyseal stippling of the axial skeleton and long bones. The most common ocular findings are cataracts and optic atrophy. We describe herein the first reported case of microsphe…
