Removal of chromium(VI) from wastewater by nanoscale zero-valent iron particles supported on multiwalled carbon nanotubes.

For the first time, nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI)-multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites were adopted to remove Cr(VI) from wastewater. Such composites were prepared through depositing nZVI particles onto MWCNTs by in situ reduction of ferrous sulfate and then characterized by TEM, SEM and XRD. The results showed that nZVI particles could disperse on the surface or into the network of MWCNTs. Compared to bare nZVI or nZVI-activated carbon composites, the nZVI-MWCNT nanocomposites exhibited around 36% higher efficiency on Cr(VI) removal. The mass ratio of nZVI to MWCNTs was opti

Direct electrochemistry of glucose oxidase and biosensing for glucose based on carbon nanotubes@SnO(2)-Au composite.

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes@SnO(2)-Au (MWCNTs@SnO(2)-Au) composite was synthesized by a chemical route. The structure and composition of the MWCNTs@SnO(2)-Au composite were confirmed by means of transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopy. Due to the good electrocatalytic property of MWCNTs@SnO(2)-Au composite, a glucose biosensor was constructed by absorbing glucose oxidase (GOD) on the hybrid material. A direct electron transfer process is observed at the MWCNTs@SnO(2)-Au/GOD-modified glassy carbon electrode. The glucose biosensor has a linear range from 4.0…

UV-light induced fabrication of CdCl2 nanotubes through CdSe/Te nanocrystals based on dimension and configuration control.

Since the discovery of WS2 nanotubes in 1992 ( Nature 1992, 360, 444), there have been significant research efforts to synthesize nanotubes and fullerene-like hollow nanoparticles (HNPs) of inorganic materials ( Nat. Nanotechnol. 2006, 1, 103) due to their potential applications as solid lubrications ( J. Mater. Chem. 2005, 15, 1782), chemical sensing ( Adv. Funct. Mater. 2006, 16, 371), drug delivering ( J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2005, 127, 7316), catalysis ( Adv. Mater. 2006, 18, 2561), or quantum harvesting ( Acc. Chem. Res. 2006, 39, 239). Nanotubes can be produced either by rolling up directly fr…

Electron-transfer reduction of cup-stacked carbon nanotubes affording cup-shaped carbons with controlled diameter and size.

The electron-transfer reduction of cup-stacked carbon nanotubes (CSCNTs) with sodium naphthalenide and the subsequent treatment with 1-iodododecane results in electrostatically destacking of CSCNTs to afford cup-shaped carbons with controlled diameter and size. The dodecylated cup-shaped carbons were highly dispersed and stable in nonpolar solvents, such as THF, tetrachloroethylene, and chloroform, as compared with the pristine CSCNTs.

Carbon nanotube-induced magnetic shielding effects on 129Xe NMR from equivariant neural networks.

Equivariant graph neural networks (EGNNs) have been successfully used in building efficient and accurate machine learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs) for molecular dynamics (MD) and to predict nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) parameters in complex systems. In this work, EGNNs are used to fine-tune an atomistic foundation model, which serves as an MLIP for large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of xenon in carbon nanotubes. In addition, EGNNs are employed to develop a machine-learning model for the 129Xe NMR magnetic shielding tensor, σ, enabling its direct prediction from the MLMD snaps…

Electroreductive removal of uranium from uranium-organic wastewater using TiO2 nanotube arrays electrodes.

Direct electrochemical reduction of soluble U(VI) to relatively insoluble U(IV) presents a simple yet highly efficient approach for treating uranium-containing wastewater. However, the remediation of radioactive wastewater co-contaminated with uranium and organic compounds remains a significant challenge. In this work, both anatase and rutile phases TiO2 nanotube arrays (A/R-TiO2 NTAs) electrodes were fabricated through anodizing and annealing of a Ti plate, enabling efficient electroreductive removal of U(VI) from both simulated and real uranium-organic co-existing wastewater. Modular Electrochemical Sensing via In Situ Reduced Carbon Quantum Dot-Nanotube Molecular Hybrids.

STUDY QUESTION: Are the maturation rates of oocytes recovered from small antral follicles different between breast cancer patients presenting with or without a BRCA 1/2 gene mutation? SUMMARY ANSWER: BRCA 1/2 gene mutations do not affect the capacity of oocytes from breast cancer candidates for fertility preservation to mature in vitro. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are associated with an increased risk for developing breast and ovarian cancer. Controversy exists about fertility and ovarian reserve in BRCA mutation carriers. Studies suggest that these patients

Carbon-Confined Tellurium Nanotube Cathodes Enabling Stable Aluminum-Ion Batteries with High Capacity.

Tellurium (Te) has emerged as a promising cathode material for aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs). However, its practical application is hindered by poor intrinsic electrical conductivity and the shuttle effect of soluble tellurium species. Herein, carbon-coated tellurium nanotube (TeNT@CT) was synthesized via a combined solvothermal-hydrothermal method followed by carbonization. The resulting TeNT@CT possesses a high specific surface area (35.1 m2 g-1) and a hierarchical porous structure, providing abundant active sites and promoting efficient electron and ion transport. Due to the synergistic con

Phase and Defect Engineering of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides Via Carbon-Nanotube-Induced Photothermal Effect.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a representative transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD), exists in semiconducting 2H and metallic 1T phases; however, the chemically inert basal plane and intrinsically low conductivity of the stable 2H phase limit its sensing performance. To overcome these limitations, 1T-rich MoS2-decorated single-walled carbon nanotube heterostructures, i.e., SWCNT@1T-rich MoS2, were synthesized via flash-thermal shock (FTS), using SWCNTs as both conductive and photothermal supports. The intense pulsed light-driven FTS process enables ultrafast annealing, reaching temperatures up

Improvement of the tensile strength of carbon nanotube fibers to 12.5 GPa by fluidics-induced alignment and densification.

Achieving the superior tensile strength of individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in macroscopic fibers depends on how CNTs are assembled. This study reports a fluidics approach: spraying high-velocity ethanol to scour and shrink pre-made CNT fibers. Experimental measurements show that the continuous scouring and shrinking induce significant improvements of the CNT alignment and packing density, leading to large increases of the van der Waals forces between CNTs and thus the tensile strength of the fibers. Under optimal conditions, the new CNT fibers achieve a specific tensile strength of 7.5×106 …

Nickel-iron-cobalt (hydr)oxide-decorated carbon nanotube forest for the oxygen-evolution reaction.

In this study, an oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst was developed by first growing a vertically aligned carbon nanotube forest (CNT F), and a NiFeCo (hydr)oxide coating was co-electrodeposited onto the CNT forest. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirm that the metal (hydr)oxide is distributed across the high-surface-area CNT scaffold. The performance is attributed to the synergy between the multi-metal (hydr)oxide supported on CNT F, which together provide abundant active sites, efficient charge transport pathways, and stron

Membrane-associated Rhes-Slc4a7 complex orchestrates tunneling nanotube formation and mutant Huntingtin spread.

Tunneling nanotubes (TNTs) are membranous structures that mediate intercellular transfer of proteins, including the pathogenic mutant Huntingtin (mHTT) protein in Huntington disease (HD). We previously identified the ras homolog enriched in the striatum (Rhes) as a key regulator of TNT formation and mHTT transmission; however, the molecular components underlying this process remained unknown. Here, using unbiased liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis of membrane-associated Rhes complexes, we identify Slc4a7 (solute carrier family 4 member 7), an intracellular pH sensor, as a …

Zika virus NS1 drives tunneling nanotube formation for mitochondrial transfer and stealth transmission in trophoblasts.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is unique among orthoflaviviruses in its vertical transmission capacity in humans, yet the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Here, we show that ZIKV induces tunneling nanotubes (TNTs) in placental trophoblasts which facilitate transfer of viral particles, proteins, mitochondria, and RNA to neighboring uninfected cells. TNT formation is driven exclusively via ZIKV non-structural protein 1 (NS1). Specifically, the N-terminal 1-50 amino acids of membrane-bound ZIKV NS1 are necessary for triggering TNT formation in host cells. Trophoblasts infected with TNT-de…

Unraveling packing-dependent surface potential contrast in a single-walled carbon nanotube bundle network.

The surface potential of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) bundles is influenced by various factors, notably their arrangement during packing. Understanding this packing-dependent surface potential entails examining the interactions between individual nanotubes within a bundle and their collective effect on electrostatic properties. Our study delves into investigating the work function of SWCNT bundles, which can be modulated by factors such as the quantity and orientation of attached SWCNTs. Utilizing Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) for characterization, we observed that the surface …

Photo-Regenerable Antimicrobial Air Filter Using Monolithic Cu-Grafted TiO2 Nanotube Mesh.

Airborne transmission of pathogens has emerged as a significant public health concern amid recurring pandemics. While conventional air filtration can capture bioaerosols, it poses risks of re-emitting pathogens, necessitating long-term air sterilization. Here, we developed a photo-regenerable antimicrobial air filter by grafting Cu clusters onto a titanium dioxide nanotube mesh (CuxO/mTNT, 1 < x < 2). The in situ grown tubular nanotubes on the mesh support provide a high surface area, and the dispersed Cu clusters exhibited superior disinfection activity. The filter achieved rapid inactivation…

Electroactive TiO₂-Cu nanotube platform with synergistic charge modulation and Cu2+ release for marine antifouling.

Biological damage remains a critical limiting factor that hinders the application of highly biocompatible titanium alloys in marine engineering. Exploiting the delicate electrostatic interactions at the interface between organisms and nanomaterials is of vital importance. In this study, an external direct current was applied to copper-coated capacitive TiO₂ nanotubes (TNT-Cu) to evaluate the antifouling effect on sessile biofilms and planktonic bacteria, and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. The heterostructure exhibited high specific capacitance and superior antifouling performance. Upo…

Solvent Selection as a Key Factor in the Performance of Semitransparent Heterojunctions Composed of Hydrogenated Nanotubes and Bismuth Sulfides.

Research on titanium nanotubes modified with metal sulfides, particularly bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3), aims to create heterostructures that efficiently absorb sunlight and then separate photogenerated charge carriers, thereby enhancing the energy conversion efficiency. This study shows a key role of solvent used for sulfide and bismuth salt solutions used during successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) onto the morphology, structure, and photoresponse of the heterojunction where one element is represented by semitransparent titania nanotubes (gTiNT) and the second is Bi2S3. Hydrophobic Carbon Nanotube-PTFE Network in Gas Diffusion Electrode for Flooding Resistance in CO2 Electroreduction.

The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) represents a promising approach for the sustainable production of value-added chemicals from CO2. However, maintaining long-term operational stability under industrially relevant high current densities remains a major challenge, primarily due to electrolyte flooding and the salt formation including carbonate and bicarbonate species, which severely compromise the performance of gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs). In this article, we present an advanced gas diffusion layer (GDL) design incorporating multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in…

Electrokinetic Motion of Neurotransmitter Ions through a 1.01 nm Diameter Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube.

The transport of cations of the neurotransmitters acetylcholine, choline, and dopamine through a 1.01 nm-diameter, 1.1 mm-long single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) has been studied for the first time. As a comparison, sodium and aniline ion transport was also investigated. All of these ions exhibited significantly enhanced electrophoretic mobilities over bulk transport. The electrophoretic mobilities of acetylcholine, choline, and sodium were found to depend on pH, specifically increasing as pH decreases. This result is explained by hydrogen ions saturating the surface charges of the SWNT. Con
