What can we learn from the attachment narratives of Latinx immigrant youth? Descriptive data with implications for future research.

Although 2023 U.S.-Mexico border encounters reached record levels, many involving Latinx immigrant youth vulnerable to trauma and mental health difficulties, little is known about linguistic features in these youths' attachment narratives. This study analyzed Child Attachment Interview (CAI) transcripts from 109 recently immigrated Central American high school students. Transcripts were processed with Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) software to capture linguistic markers of attachment and were also coded using established CAI procedures for comparison across modalities. With no prior

"I Won't Let the Past Destroy Me": A Narrative Analysis of Identity Repair and Nascent Post-traumatic Growth Among Former Child Soldiers in Colombia.

This study explores how former child soldiers in Colombia narrate identity repair following their experiences of conflict. Twenty-five adolescents and young people (aged 14-19) participated in participatory life-history workshops using a creative auto/biography (CAB) method. A narrative analysis of over 200 first-person multimodal texts identified four recurring plots- the Struggler, Learner, Advocate, and Survivor-each reflecting distinct, non-sequential pathways of self-reconstruction, emotional processing, and social re-engagement. These plots show how young people reimagine self and negoti

Verbal narrative ability and episodic autobiographical memory in adolescents and young adults with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Poor episodic autobiographical future thinking has recently been reported in 22q11.2 carriers. However, whether these impairments are due to poor language skills or indicate a true episodic autobiographical memory deficit remains unclear. Language impairments are the hallmark of the neuropsychological profile of young children with 22q11DS, but language outcomes in adolescence and young adulthood, especially high-level linguistic skills such as narrative, remain largely unexplored. The aims of this study are first to precisely characterize the narrative abilities of a group of adol

Exploring cultural imaginaries of robots with children with brittle bone disease: a participatory design study.

A symbiotic relationship exists between narrative imaginaries of and real-life advancements in technology. Such cultural imaginings have a powerful influence on our understanding of the potential that technology has to affect our lives; as a result, narrative-based approaches to participatory design (PD) of technology are an active area of investigation. In this ongoing study, the following research questions are addressed: how can PD be optimised for the fields of robotics and assistive technology, particularly with regard to fostering empowerment and eliciting how people imagine the role of t

Centering Patient Voices in Lupus Pain: A Biopsychosocial Analysis of Reddit Narratives Using Large Language Models.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with chronic illness share their experiences in online communities and generate rich data on pain management. This study applied natural language processing methods, including large language models (LLMs), to Reddit discussions from lupus communities to characterize multidimensional pain experiences framed in the biopsychosocial model. METHODS: We extracted Reddit posts from the r/Lupus and r/LupusSupport subreddits posted from June 9, 2010, through December 31, 2023. Pain-related posts were identified using a clinically informed pain lexicon. Topic modeling was used to id

Natural Language Processing Accurately Differentiates Cancer Symptom Information in Electronic Health Record Narratives.

PURPOSE: Identifying cancer symptoms in electronic health record (EHR) narratives is feasible with natural language processing (NLP). However, more efficient NLP systems are needed to detect various symptoms and distinguish observed symptoms from negated symptoms and medication-related side effects. We evaluated the accuracy of NLP in (1) detecting 14 symptom groups (ie, pain, fatigue, swelling, depressed mood, anxiety, nausea/vomiting, pruritus, headache, shortness of breath, constipation, numbness/tingling, decreased appetite, impaired memory, disturbed sleep) and (2) distinguishing observed

Making oral comprehension interventions TIDieR: A narrative synthesis of interventions improving comprehension in children from 1 to 5 years with language difficulties.

BACKGROUND: Oral comprehension difficulties are prevalent in preschool children with language difficulties and are frequently the target of speech and language therapy (SLT) intervention. To support the implementation of research to practice, there is a need to identify effective interventions for this population and to describe their components. To date, reviews of oral comprehension intervention have not used inclusion criteria aligned with common clinical practice, particularly in the United Kingdom. No studies have previously used the Template for Intervention Description and Replication (

A narrative inquiry into non-Indigenous medical educators and leaders participation in reconciliatory work.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, medical schools are operationalising policies and programming to address Indigenous health inequities. Although progress has been made, challenges persist. In Canada, where this research is conducted, Indigenous representation within medical schools remains low, leaving a small number of Indigenous advocates leading unprecedented levels of equity-related work, often with insufficient resources. The change needed within medical education cannot fall solely on the shoulders of Indigenous Peoples; non-Indigenous Peoples must also be involved. This work aims to better under

Storytelling in midwifery: 'Not just for entertainment'.

BACKGROUND: The practice of sharing work-related stories has been shown to positively influence the learning experiences of student midwives. Less is known about the use of storytelling in general midwifery practice. AIM: To explore the practice of sharing stories in midwifery, with a focus on story type, content and the reasons why stories are told. METHODS: A descriptive qualitative study utilising interviews was conducted among 17 midwives from two metropolitan maternity units in Sydney, Australia. Participants were asked to tell a story or stories they often told between midwives and the

A comparison of narrative abilities in Malay school-age typically developing children and children with developmental language disorder.

Research on narrative skills in the Malay language is scarce for both typically developing (TD) and children with Developmental Language Disorders (DLD). This study examines the differences in narrative abilities of Malay-speaking school-age children with and without DLD. Fifteen Malay-speaking TD children and 15 children with DLD told four stories elicited using the Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narrative (MAIN). Group comparisons were conducted in narrative production (story retelling and story generation) as well as in comprehension. We also examined the differences in both groups'

Pastoral Narrative Disclosure: The Development and Evaluation of an Australian Chaplaincy Intervention Strategy for Addressing Moral Injury.

This paper describes the development and initial chaplaincy user evaluation of 'Pastoral Narrative Disclosure' (PND) as a rehabilitation strategy developed for chaplains to address moral injury among veterans. PND is an empirically informed and integrated intervention comprising eight stages of pastoral counselling, guidance and education that was developed by combining two previously existing therapeutic techniques, namely Litz et al's (2017) 'Adaptive Disclosure' and 'Confessional Practice' (Joob & Kettunen, 2013). The development and results of PND can be categorized into five phases. Phase

Children's Elaborated Responses to Yes-No Questions in Forensic Interviews About Sexual Abuse.

Children tend to answer yes-no questions with unelaborated "yes" and "no" responses, but the types of details likely omitted from unelaborated answers have not been explored. This study examined 379 4- to 12-year-olds' answers to yes-no questions in forensic interviews about CSA (N = 11,187), focusing on age differences in elaborated responses. As expected, older children elaborated more frequently than younger children. Our novel categorization of elaboration types revealed that although there were no age differences in children's use of nominal corrections (correcting a label), or in emphati

Narrative coherence, psychopathology, and wellbeing: Concurrent and longitudinal findings in a mid-adolescent sample.

INTRODUCTION: Research with adults and older adolescents has found that people exhibiting higher narrative coherence in life stories also report higher psychological wellbeing; however, this link has not been investigated longitudinally. The current study investigated concurrent and longitudinal relationships in mid-adolescence between narrative coherence (causal and thematic coherence) of turning point narratives and psychopathology (depressive symptoms and rumination) and psychological wellbeing (life satisfaction). Hypothesis one was that in concurrent analyses, narrative coherence would be

From Freewill to Force: Examining Types of Coercion and Psychological Outcomes in Unwanted Sex.

Unwanted sex is sex that is not fully desired, whether an individual agrees to it or not. It can be coerced-when one person compels another unwilling person-or not coerced-when a person willing agrees to participate. Experiencing unwanted sex, especially when coerced, has been associated with negative psychological outcomes. Researchers have created severity continua of coerced sex based on type of coercion used, but relative severity of outcomes across the range of unwanted sex has not been fully evaluated. This study aimed to identify types of coercion experienced in unwanted sex and evaluat

Emotion Dysregulation in Sexually Abused Preschoolers: Insights from a Story Completion Task.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) during the preschool period can seriously undermine children's ability to develop emotional competency. Narrative tasks, such as the MacArthur Story Stem Battery (MSSB), are particularly adapted to gain a better understanding of young children's self-regulation processes. To explore the emotion regulation competencies of sexually abused preschoolers, we developed a coding grid and undertook a detailed analysis of abused and non-abused children's narratives using the MSSB. A sample of 62 sexually abused and 65 non-abused preschoolers 3½ to 6½ years old was recruited and

CATHOLICISM AND EVERYDAY MORALITY: Filipino women's narratives on reproductive health.

This study examines the relationship between state policies, religion, reproductive politics, and competing understandings of embodied sexual and reproductive morality. Using ethnographic and life history interviews, this study looks at the lives of Filipino urban poor women and how they interpret, follow and resist Catholic Church doctrines and practices as these relate to sexuality and reproduction. Taking everyday morality as embedded in social practice, this paper argues that women's subjective reinterpretations of Catholic teachings regarding contraception and abortion render religion pli

Collective narrative practice with unaccompanied refugee minors: "The Tree of Life" as a response to hardship.

During the summer of 2016, in the midst of one of the biggest refugee crises in centuries, the author of this article joined the team from a shelter for unaccompanied refugee minors on Samos, Greece, in an effort to provide young boys seeking asylum in Europe with an opportunity to engage in speaking about the difficulties they have encountered in life. The team used a collective narrative methodology called the "Tree of Life", originally developed by Ncube-Mlilo and Denborough. In addition to traditional psychological treatments, collective narrative practice creates a secure foundation for a

The Relationship between Socioeconomic Status and Narrative Abilities in a Group of Italian Normally Developing Children.

OBJECTIVE: Only limited and conflicting information is available regarding the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and narrative abilities. Besides, the role fathers' SES plays in the development of their children's narrative abilities has never been investigated. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between fathers' and mothers' SES and narrative abilities of their children assessed with the Italian version of the Bus Story Test (I-BST). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 505 normally developing Italian children were enrolled in the study. Information regarding par
