BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal (NP) swabbing is a technique that is commonly used to test pediatric patients for viral infections with increased use during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Complications from NP swabbing are rare and seem to occur more frequently in patients at risk of bleeding. Little is known about institutional or individual practices and experiences with NP swab testing in pediatric patients with risk factors for bleeding.
METHODS: We conducted a survey study of pediatric hematology/oncology (PHO) attending physicians to assess practices and experiences with NP swab test

INTRODUCTION: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a nasopharyngeal epithelial neoplasm that has distinct aetiological, epidemiological and biological characteristics compared to other head and neck malignancies. Patients usually present late due to non-specific symptoms and deep location of the tumour in the nasopharynx.
CASE REPORT: We would like to highlight a case of advanced NPC presenting with generalised lymphadenopathy, without the presence of an obvious nasopharyngeal mass that masqueraded as lymphoma in the initial stage.
CONCLUSIONS: NPC may share clinical features with other sinonas

Staphylococcus aureus nasal colonization is a risk factor for infection. A large proportion of the population are identified as potential S. aureus carriers yet we only partially understand the repertoire of genetic factors that promote long-term nasal colonization. Here we present a murine model of nasopharyngeal colonization that requires a low S. aureus inoculum and is amenable to experimental evolution approaches. We used this model to experimentally evolve S. aureus using successive passages in the nasopharynx to identify those genetic loci under selection. After 3 cycles of colonization,

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma occurs in many parts of the pars nasalis pharyngis, and the pathological type is mainly squamous cell carcinoma. Because of the special position of nasopharynx, breathing, pronunciation and daily life will be seriously affected. At present, the research direction of nasopharyngeal carcinoma is mainly to explore the law of tumor cell proliferation and migration, study the molecular mechanism, master its biological behavior and clinical significance, try to find therapeutic targets, and further improve the level of tumor treatment. However, the pathologic structure and m

PURPOSE: To assess the causes of death (COD) and long-term survival after nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) diagnosis.
METHODS: Using linked data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program, patients with NPC diagnosed from 1990 to 2010 and followed up >5 years were identified. Chi-squared test, the Kaplan-Meier method, and the Cox proportional hazard model were used for analyses.
RESULTS: Among the 3,036 long-term NPC survivors, 1,432 survived for >5-10 years and 1,604 survived for >10 years. The most common COD was primary NPC (36.9%), followed by other causes (28.7%), other

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have reported a close relationship between cancer and microbes, particularly gut and tumor microbiota; however, the presence of tumor microbiome in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and its role in the prognosis of NPC remain unclear.
METHODS: We collected 64 samples including tissues from 50 patients with NPC (NPC group) and 14 patients with chronic nasopharyngitis (control group) receiver operating characteristics and we applied 16S ribosome RNA gene sequencing of all samples to assess microbiome profiles and immunohistochemistry to detect tumor microbiome in NPC…

Nasopharyngeal swabs are performed to collect material for diagnosing diseases affecting the respiratory system, such as Covid-19. Yet, no systematic anatomical study defines concrete prerequisites for successfully targeting the nasopharyngeal mucosa. We therefore aim at simulating nasopharyngeal swabs in human body donors to characterize parameters allowing and supporting to enter the nasopharynx with a swab, while avoiding endangering the cribriform plate. With the aid of metal probes and commercial swabs a total of 314 nasopharyngeal swabs in anatomical head/neck specimens stemming from 157

Cell spreading and migration play a pivotal role in many diseases such as tumor metastasis. In particular, nasopharyngeal tumor cells have known of their tendency of migration to pterygoid muscles and further distant metastasis. Although existing studies revealed key characteristics of the nasopharyngeal tumor cells, their migration preference is yet to be thoroughly understood, especially in the physical aspects including the microtopographical factors. Researchers have developed techniques in recent years to study microtopography-related cell behaviors but they are not yet applied in investi

INTRODUCTION: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a tumor arising from the epithelial cells of the nasopharynx. NPC can spread and invade the base of skull, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, pterygopalatine fossa, and apex of the orbit. However, the involvement of the optic nerve in NPC is rare. The purpose of this case report is to report the efficacy of corticosteroid therapy in optic neuropathy secondary to NPC.
CLINICAL CASE: A 56-year-old Chinese woman, an active smoker, presented with a hearing deficit, persistent tinnitus and nasal congestion. Examination and investigations revealed the p

The role of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy for retinoblastoma has evolved considerably over the years with the efficacy of intraarterial chemotherapy and the high incidence of secondary malignant neoplasms following radiation therapy. The use of spot scanning intensity-modulated proton therapy may reduce the risk of secondary malignancies. For pediatric nasopharyngeal carcinoma, the current standard of care is induction chemotherapy followed by chemoradiation therapy. For adrenocortical carcinoma, the mainstay of treatment is surgery and chemotherapy. The role of radiation therap

OBJECTIVES: Sexual health problems have been identified as an unmet need in head and neck cancer (HNC) survivors. In particular, little is known about such outcomes in survivors of nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study of NPC survivors with ≥4y follow-up was undertaken. Sexual satisfaction was assessed using the optional "I am satisfied with my sex life" item of the FACT-H&N. Other patient-reported outcomes measures were also captured including fatigue (FACIT-F), HNC symptom burden (MDASI-HN), emotional distress (HADS) and frontal function (FrSBE). Univar

BACKGROUND: The human microbiome evolves rapidly in early life with contributions from various factors such as diet, delivery mode, medical history, antibiotics exposure, genetics, immunomodulators and the environment. A high use of antibiotics in pediatric outpatient settings has been well documented, and improvement in antibiotic selection is required to reduce the risks of antibiotic resistance and disruption of the microbiome.
METHODS: We performed an exploratory study using 16S rRNA gene-based sequencing to characterize the gut and nasopharyngeal microbiome of children (n = 50) age 1-6 y

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a locally aggressive tumor that predominantly affects adolescent males. Surgical resection is generally considered the standard treatment for both primary and recurrent tumors, regardless of staging. The natural history of these tumors, particularly when untreated or in the setting of residual tumor, is not well characterized. In this article, we report a case of true spontaneous JNA involution. Although the involution of residual tumor after surgical resection has previously been reported, to our knowledge, this is the first documented case of spo

INTRODUCTION: The nasopharyngeal airway (NPA) is used by emergency providers and first responders to assist with oxygenation in obtunded, critically ill patients. There are few recorded NPA complications.
CASE REPORT: We describe a unique case in which a patient went multiple days with recurrent symptoms of upper airway obstruction secondary to retained NPA.
DISCUSSION: Nasopharyngeal airways may be uniquely prone to being displaced and retained due to their use in emergent situations, their small size, and time of insertion in the field prior to emergency department (ED) contact where hando

PURPOSE: The aim of this work is to evaluate the anatomical changes of the glandular structures during the NPC IMRT and to study their dosimetric impacts.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty patients receiving IMRT for NPC were included. For each patient, a second dosimetric CT was performed at a dose of 38Gy, which was fused with the initial planning dosimetric CT. We calculated the volume percent change, the positional and dosimetric variation between the 2 scanners for the glandular structures (parotid, submaxillary, thyroid and pituitary).
RESULTS: We observed a decrease in the volume of right

Orofacial pain (OFP) disorders affect the maxillofacial complex and typically involve other locations in the head and neck. Common etiologies of OFP disorders include odontogenic sources, temporomandibular disorders, neuropathic pain, chemosensory disorders, and headaches. Less commonly, benign and malignant neoplasms can be associated with OFP complaints. Patients with OFP symptoms require a thorough evaluation and are often referred to additional healthcare providers for interprofessional management. In those OFP patients whose symptoms do not respond to conventional treatment(s), whose symp
