Limited vertical tarsal resection in a case of basal cell carcinoma of the lower eyelid.

We present the clinical case of a 71-year-old woman with a history of multiple basal cell carcinomas (BCC) who presented a nodular lesion in practically the entire extension of the free edge of the lower eyelid. The lesion was approached by excision of the palpebral margin with limited vertical resection of the tarsus and Tripier flap with a correct aesthetic and functional result, free histological margins and no recurrence in a 12-month follow-up.

A rare case of cutaneous myxoma with trichofolliculoma-like features.

Carney complex is a rare genetic disorder associated with a number of cutaneous lesions, especially cutaneous myxomas. We present a rare case of cutaneous myxoma (superficial angiomyxoma) with trichofolliculoma-like features in a patient with Carney complex, and explore how the associated histopathology provides critical context for elucidating the etiology of this benign neoplasm.

Dermoscopy of cutaneous adnexal tumours: a systematic review of the literature.

Cutaneous adnexal tumours (ATs) encompass a variegated group of hamartomas and benign or malignant tumours, originating from the hair follicle, sebaceous, eccrine or apocrine glands that may simulate other cutaneous neoplasms. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the spectrum of clinical and dermoscopic features of ATs, to better define these lesions and assist in the differential diagnosis. We performed a two-step systematic search of the literature in PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library databases from inception until 4 September 2020. In the first step, we aimed to define h

Glabellar superciliary bilobed flap for reconstruction of large medial canthus region defect.

The aim of this study was to describe a series of patients who have undergone a medial canthal reconstruction with a glabellar superciliary bilobed flap. A series of 30 patients were included with medial canthal defects after excision of medial canthal tumour who underwent reconstruction using a glabellar-superciliary bilobed flap of adjoining skin and subcutaneous tissue. Eighteen procedures were performed under local anaesthesia. The remaining 12 cases were combined with major lid reconstruction and performed under general anaesthesia. Complete closure of the defect, aesthetic outcome, compl

Sunlight vitamin D and skin cancer.

Today, there is a controversial debate in many scientific and public communities on how much sunlight is appropriate to balance between the positive and negative effects of solar UV-exposure. UV exposure undoubtedly causes DNA damage of skin cells and is a major environmental risk factor for all types of skin cancers. In geographic terms, living in parts of the world with increased erythemal UV or high average annual bright sun results in increased risks of skin cancers, with the greatest increased risk for squamous cell carcinoma, followed by basal cell carcinoma and then melanoma. On the oth

Correlation of embryonic fusion planes with the anatomical distribution of basal cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: The clinical relevance of the anatomic distribution of basal cell carcinoma is not completely understood. Embryonic fusion planes--the regions of mesenchymal migration and fusion of the five primordial facial processes during the 5th to 10th weeks of human development--have been implicated in the pathogenesis of basal cell carcinoma. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to examine the predilection of midfacial basal cell carcinoma for cutaneous anatomical sites correlated to embryonic fusion planes. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Using archived digital images and a detailed anatomic diagram, cas

Clinicopathological report Periocular tumour of the follicular infundibulum.

Tumour of the follicular infundibulum (TFI) is an uncommon, benign lesion of the skin adnexae. Four cases are reported of periocular TFI. In all cases a clinical diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma was made before surgery; however, histopatholog ca examination revealed TFI. This is an epithelial tumour showing differentiation along the lines of the follicular infundibulum. Characteristic features are a shelf-like proliferat on of pale epithelia cells in the upper dermis, attachment to the epidermis and the upper portions of the pilosebaceous units, a dense border of elastic fibres, and palisadin

Basal cell carcinoma of the vulva. A report of four cases.

BACKGROUND: Basal cell carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor of the skin, with approximately 400,000 new cases yearly in the United States. Basal cell carcinomas account for 2-3% of all vulvar malignancies. CASES: Four patients presented in the eighth and ninth decades of life (70, 78, 87 and 89 years). Seventy-five percent of patients had a unifocal lesion. Cases 3 or 4 presented with recurrent lesions at 5 and 10 years, respectively. All patients were treated with wide local excision. Surgical margins were free of disease. None of the patients had lymph nodes suspicious for malignanc

Trichoepitheliomatous infiltration of the skin simulating leprosy.

A 13-year-old girl had a six-year history of infiltrated erythematous plaques on the face, alopecia of the eyebrows, diffuse alopecia of the scalp, and absence of body hair. Histologically, the lesions on the face and body corresponded to trichoepitheliomas. The lesions on the face clinically simulated lepromatous leprosy. This case probably represents an entity not previously described.

Extracutaneous second primary cancer risk in nonmelanoma skin cancer patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) may be at an elevated risk of developing second primary cancers (SPCs), but high-risk sites and specific population characteristics remain unclear. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Medline, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were systematically searched to identify population-based studies reporting standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) of SPCs in NMSC patients. Meta-analyses were performed for non-skin cancer risk and 34 site-specific SPCs. Subgroup analyses were stratified by gender, NMSC category, age, time since NMSC diagnosis, and geog

A case of basal cell carcinoma of skin with bone metastasis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Basal cell carcinoma is the most prevalent skin cancer, most characterized by local aggressiveness but with low metastatic potential, and bone metastasis is quite heterogeneous, thus the incidence profile is variable size from 0.0028% to 0.5%. We have this patient with an unusual example of basal cell carcinoma with bone metastases to add to the scarce report on this matter. CASE DESCRIPTION: Here we document a 48-year-old Persian man with a background of being exposed to the sun for a long time. He was diagnosed with an ulcer on the cheek, which was clinically characterized and f

Primary basal cell carcinoma of the caruncle: case report and review of the literature.

We present a rare case of primary caruncle basal cell carcinoma (BCC), a condition with limited occurrences. Our patient, an 80-year-old woman without prior ocular pathological history, presented a 2x2mm pedunculated blackish nodular lesion on the caruncle of her left eye, without local conjunctival or cutaneous involvement. Histological analysis following complete excision confirmed the presence of basal cell carcinoma within the caruncle. Over a span of 30 months, no recurrence has been observed. While scant cases are documented in the literature, we conducted a review of these instances. De

Previous therapy and the recurrence rate of basal cell carcinoma after Mohs surgery: a meta-analysis.

Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) for basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is indicated for patients at high risk of recurrence; other therapies, including standard surgical excision, cryotherapy, electrodesiccation and curettage, and radiotherapy, are used in low-risk BCC and in patients who cannot undergo surgery. However, in the case of recurrence following treatment with any of these methods, MMS is indicated. This study aimed to examine how preoperative treatment before MMS affects the recurrence rate after surgery. We conducted a meta-analysis to compare the recurrence rates of primary BCC and previ
