Multifocal Extramedullary Plasmacytoma of the Thyroid With Cervical and Paratracheal Lymph Node Involvement and Progression to Multiple Myeloma.

Extramedullary plasmacytomas without evidence of systemic illness make up less than 5% of all plasma cell neoplasms. The incidence of extramedullary plasmacytoma of the thyroid region is exceedingly rare. This report discusses the case of a 72-year-old male with extramedullary plasmacytoma of the thyroid. The patient underwent a total thyroidectomy for an enlarging right-sided thyroid nodule, and intraoperatively, the plasmacytoma was found to have an extracapsular component with adherence to the regional soft tissue as well as involvement of the right laryngeal nerve and regional lymph nodes.

Erdheim Chester disease in a patient with Burkitt lymphoma: a case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Erdheim Chester disease (ECD) is a rare, non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis characterized by widespread tissue infiltration by CD68-positive, CD1a-negative foamy histiocytes. ECD can be difficult to identify, and diagnosis relies on the presence of histiocytes with certain histologic and immunophenotypic features in an appropriate clinical and radiologic setting. Clinical signs and symptoms are variable depending on which organ systems are involved. Most patients have at least skeletal involvement with bone pain as well as fatigue. Other common manifestations include diabetes insipi

Imaging findings in musculoskeletal complications of AIDS.

Patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) are susceptible to a variety of complications that can affect the musculoskeletal system. These complications can be infectious, inflammatory, or neoplastic or can take some other form. Infection (cellulitis, necrotizing fasciitis, soft-tissue abscess, pyomyositis, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis) is the most common complication. Inflammatory processes include various arthritides as well as polymyositis. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and Kaposi sarcoma are the two most common neoplasms in this patie

Urinary excretion of glycosaminoglycans and hydroxyproline in Paget's disease of bone, compared with neoplastic invasion of bone.

Urinary glycosaminoglycan and hydroxyproline excretion was studied in 11 patients with clear evidence of Paget's disease of bone. Urinary hydroxyproline, cetyl pyridinium chloride (CPC)-precipitable uronic acid and CPC-precipitable hexosamine were expressed as ratios to urinary creatinine. Urine samples were concentrated x 1000 by vacuum dialysis and the glycosaminoglycans examined by electrophoresis on cellulose acetate followed by staining with alcian blue. All the cases studied showed markedly raised hydroxyproline excretion, whereas the uronic acid excretion was normal or only slightly rai

An Evaluation of Risk Factors for Intracranial Metastases of Sarcomas: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Sarcomas, a group of neoplasms comprising both tissue and bone soft tissue tumors, has an increasing prevalence in recent years. Prognosis significantly hinges on early detection, and if not detected early, may consequently metastasize. This review will be the first systematic review and meta-analysis characterizing the presentation and progression of brain metastases from bone and soft tissue cancers. METHODS: The PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were queried to identify studies reporting the incidence of intracranial brain metastases from primary sarcoma to the pre

[Clinical aspects, morphology and therapy of an unusual case of bilateral macrodactyly].

Macrodactyly, originally described by von Klein in 1824, is one of the rarest congenital anomalies of the hand. It displays a wide variety of manifestations, and its association with other congenital defects and syndromes has been discussed by many authors. A rare case involving an adult with bilateral, hyperostotic macrodactyly of the hands is presented. The hands were not treated in childhood. Clinical findings, pathology, and treatment are discussed.

A Fully Human Engineered Bone Niche With Endogenous Osteoclastogenesis Reveals Osteoclast-Dependent Osteomimicry in Prostate Cancer Cells.

Bone is the predominant site of metastasis in advanced prostate cancer (PCa), yet the mechanisms governing tumor-bone interactions remain incompletely understood, thanks in part to the scarcity of relevant models. The role played by osteoclasts in such interactions is especially obscure. A modular human three-dimensional (3D) in vitro bone niche model was developedThe model integrates osteoblasts and osteoclasts within a mineralized scaffold, recreating an endosteal-like microenvironment for co-culture with PCa cell lines and patient-derived organoids (PDOs). The engineered construct maintains

Breast cancer with scalp metastases: a case report.

BACKGROUND: While breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, cutaneous metastases are rare in breast cancer. Additionally, scalp involvement in breast cancer metastasis is extremely rare. That being said, scalp lesions should always be thoroughly investigated to distinguish metastatic lesions from other neoplasms. CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old female Middle-Eastern patient presented with metastatic breast cancer in the lungs, bone, liver, and brain with no signs of multiple organ failure, in addition to cutaneous metastases, including the scalp. Between 2017 and 2022, she was manage

Molecular genetics of paragangliomas of the skull base and head and neck region: implications for medical and surgical management.

Paragangliomas are rare, slow-growing tumors that frequently arise in the head and neck, with the carotid bodies and temporal bone of the skull base being the most common sites. These neoplasms are histologically similar to pheochromocytomas that form in the adrenal medulla and are divided into sympathetic and parasympathetic subtypes based on functionality. Skull base and head and neck region paragangliomas (SHN-PGs) are almost always derived from parasympathetic tissue and rarely secrete catecholamines. However, they can cause significant morbidity by mass effect on various cranial nerves an

Diagnostic utility of automated SureFISH (Dako Omnis) in the diagnosis of musculoskeletal translocation-related sarcomas.

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is an essential tool for genetic diagnosis in daily pathological work. Almost full automation of FISH can be achieved with the recently released automated SureFISH platform (Dako Omnis, Agilent Technologies, Santa Clara, CA, USA). Its utility has been reported in HER2 amplification of breast and gastric carcinoma and ALK-rearranged lung cancer. Here, we examined the utility of automated SureFISH for the identification of rearrangement signals in translocation-related sarcomas (TRSs), including 11 EWSR1-rearranged and 10 synovial sarcoma cases, compared

Oncogenic osteomalacia caused by phosphaturic mesenchymal tumours in the proximal and shaft of the tibia: a case report.

Oncogenic osteomalacia is caused by a small mesenchymal tumour characterised by phosphaturia, hypophosphatemia, decreased serum vitamin D3 level, and osteomalacia. Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour of the mixed connective tissue type (PMTMCT) is the commonest subtype and usually involves a single site. We report a case of PMTMCT involving the left proximal and shaft of the tibia in a 42-year-old man.

Clinicopathological characterization of GLI1-altered mesenchymal neoplasms involving the dermis and subcutis: a series of eight cases.

AIMS: GLI1-altered mesenchymal neoplasms are a recently described tumour group characterized by gene fusions or amplifications involving GLI1. They show a wide anatomical distribution and harbour potential to metastasize. This study aims to add to the data on GLI1-altered mesenchymal tumours involving the dermis and subcutis. METHODS: Departmental files were searched for GLI1-altered mesenchymal neoplasms involving the dermis and/or subcutis. Clinicopathological features were reviewed, and cases were assessed by immunohistochemistry, GLI1 in situ hybridization, and targeted next-generation se

Computed tomographic characteristics of odontogenic neoplasms in dogs.

Odontogenic neoplasms are locally invasive oral tumors in dogs. The purpose of this retrospective study was to describe CT characteristics for varying histopathologic types of canine odontogenic neoplasms. A board-certified veterinary radiologist who was unaware of histologic findings reviewed and scored imaging studies. A total of 29 dogs were included in the study. Twenty-three of these dogs had concurrent dental radiographs. The most common CT characteristics for all tumor types were a direct association with or in the region of multiple teeth in 96.4% (27/28), contrast enhancement in 96.3%

Natural killer cell neoplasms: a distinctive group of highly aggressive lymphomas/leukemias.

Natural killer (NK) cell neoplasms, which include extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma (nasal and extranasal) and aggressive NK cell leukemia, are generally rare, but they are more common in people of Oriental, Mexican and South American descent. These neoplasms are highly aggressive, and show a strong association with Epstein-Barr virus. Extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma most commonly affects the nasal cavity and other mucosal sites of the upper aerodigestive tract. Patients present with nasal obstruction or midfacial destruction. Despite the early stage of disease at presentation, overall survival is p
