AIMS: Kinase fusion-positive soft tissue tumors represent an emerging, molecularly defined group of mesenchymal tumors with a wide morphologic spectrum and diverse activating kinases. Here, we present two cases of soft tissue tumors with novel LTK fusions.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Both cases presented as acral skin nodules (big toe and middle finger) in pediatric patients (17-year-old girl and 2-year-old boy). The tumors measured 2 and 3 cm in greatest dimension. Histologically, both cases exhibited bland-looking spindle cells infiltrating adipose tissue and accompanied by collagenous stroma. One

Bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation (BPOP) (Nora lesion) is a benign bone surface lesion, which most commonly occurs in the digits of young patients and has a high rate of recurrence. Histologically, it is composed of a mixture of disorganized bone, cartilage, and spindle cells in variable proportions and characterized by amorphous "blue bone" mineralization. Recurrent chromosomal abnormalities, including t(1;17)(q32-42;q21-23) and inv(7)(q21.1-22q31.3-32), have been reported in BPOP. However, the exact genes involved in the rearrangements remain unknown. In this study, we analy

Asian people frequently show small noses, narrow nasal apertures, and congestive mucosa on the turbinates and septum. To reduce the risk of nasal morbidity with increased radicality for skull base tumors in these patients, we developed endoscopic transnasal interseptal approach (ETISA) in transsphenoidal surgery for invasive clival tumors (ICTs). Indication for ETISA is radical resection for tumors occupying deep ventral skull base regions, confined posterior to the level of the middle turbinates. After removing ethmoidal air cells, the middle turbinates are laterally deflected. A linear incis

The study aimed at assessing cancer risk in a cohort of workers employed in the rubber tire production. The cohort consisted of 17,747 workers (11,660 men and 6087 women) employed in a rubber tire plant for at least three months during the years 1950-1995. The cohort follow-up was completed on December 31, 1995. Deaths by causes were analyzed using standardized mortality ratio (SMR) calculated by the person-years method. The mortality pattern of the general population of Poland was used as the reference. The study indicated significantly lower total mortality in the cohort (men: SMR = 72; wome

INTRODUCTION: Mast cells are normal connective tissue residents. Their densities vary from an organ to other, but are constantly well represented in respiratory tract. Mast cell hyperplasia was found in many malignant tumors, but the significance of this phenomenon is still unknown. In the literature, there are few data about mast cell reaction in malignant laryngeal neoplasm.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied archive blocks from 127 laryngeal carcinomas. For histological diagnosis two sections were prepared for Hematoxylin-Eosin staining and Alcian blue-Safranin histochemistry at pH 0.2 for i

BACKGROUND: Pericardial fluid (PF) accumulates through various mechanisms and cytology is part of the workup to determine the specific etiology, primarily to rule in or rule out malignancy. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the current study is the largest systematic evaluation of PF cytology performed to date.
METHODS: PF specimens collected over 6 years were retrieved. Clinical history, laboratory, cytologic, and pericardial biopsy results were recorded.
RESULTS: A total of 128 PF specimens were obtained from 113 patients (56 males and 57 females), representing 4.5% of all fluids. Of

Synchronous primary brain tumors are exceedingly rare. When they occur, most cases are associated with metastatic disease. To the best of our knowledge, we report the first case of an atypical meningioma infiltrated by a T-cell-primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL), specifically anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). We present a novel, unifying, plausible mechanism for its origin based on theories in the current literature. A 65-year-old man with a history of near-total resection of atypical meningioma presented with a complaint of progressive headaches. Imaging revealed recurrent t

Studies have demonstrated that many reproductive disorders can compromise the binding pattern of glycosidic residues, mainly in cows and sows. In the current study, the binding pattern of lectins was characterised and compared in normal and pathological ovaries of bitches. Fourteen biotinylated lectins (BSA-1B, Con-A, DBA, LCA, PHA-E, PHA-L, PNA, RCA-1, SBA, SJA, STA, WGA, s-WGA, UEA-1) were used. In ovaries without lesions, the predominant staining for RCA-1 was observed in the zona pellucida (ZP) of initial follicles, in the oocytes of primordial and primary follicles, and in the artery wall

Amyopathic dermatomyositis is a rare, idiopathic, connective tissue disease that presents with dermatologic lesions of classic dermatomyositis but lacks the myopathy of this disease. Cutaneous manifestations may include Gottron's sign, heliotrope rash, and characteristic patterns of poikiloderma. There is a substantial risk for developing interstitial lung disease or malignancy in patients with amyopathic dermatomyositis. A literature review of amyopathic dermatomyositis was performed using the PubMed medical database. The key features of amyopathic dermatomyositis, including autoantibodies, c

Giant-cell tumour of the tendon sheath (GCTTS) is a soft tissue tumour that may invade bone, causing an intrinsic osseous lesion or instability on radiographs. A case with scaphoid instability caused by a histologically-confirmed neighbouring GCTTS has rarely been described in the literature. No definite and radical method is available for the treatment of GCTTS. This report describes an unusual case of a 22-year-old woman who previously experienced a GCTTS in her right elbow, which was removed 10 years earlier. Currently, she presented with an enlarged painless right wrist mass with focal swe

Patients referred to the authors' hospital for evaluation on suspicion of a bone or soft-tissue malignancy frequently present to the Orthopaedic Oncology Clinic with magnetic resonance (MR) images that show typical features of nonmalignant or nonneoplastic entities. The purpose of this article is to review the benign entities that may be mistaken by the radiologist for a malignancy and thus lead to needless referral to an orthopedic oncologist. Normal hematopoietic marrow and marrow edema due to a stress reaction may mimic a neoplasm at MR imaging, but knowledge of the typical patterns and loc

Neurofibroma is a benign neoplasm derived from peripheral nerves whose etiology is still unclear. It may present as a solitary lesion or be associated with other diseases such as neurofibromatosis type I and II syndrome. This paper aims to report an extremely rare case of a solitary giant neurofibroma of the mental nerve whose etiology was related to a local trauma. A 14-year-old female patient presented an extensive left facial mass with a size of 7 × 5 × 4 cm, located between the teeth 33 and 37 in the mandible region. It has begun to grow 3 months after a local trauma. Imaging studies were

Los Alamos National Laboratory has analyzed autopsy tissue for the USTR, as a part of its study of the uptake, distribution and retention of Pu and other transuranic elements in occupationally exposed workers since 1978. In April 1979, Los Alamos received the internal organs and bone samples from the first whole-body donation to the USTR. The donor was known to have an internal deposition of 241Am. All soft tissue, the bones from the right half of the skeleton, and the odd-numbered vertebrae were received at Los Alamos in February 1980. The bones were subdivided along anatomical areas of inter

Intermediately differentiated mast cell tumors in two dogs were subcutaneously xenotransplanted into severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mice. Both tumors primarily grew and were serially transplantable in SCID mice. The histological features of the xenografts were similar to those of original tumors in dogs. Both of these subcutaneous tumors were judged as connective tissue mast cells by toluidine blue stain. One of the two xenografts metastasized to the tracheobronchial lymph nodes, omentum, mesentery, subpleural region and retroperitoneum of the SCID mouse. These canine mast cell tumor

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cancer accompanied by a moderate-sized pseudocyst with extrapancreatic growth is extremely rare. Diagnosis of pancreatic cancer on preoperative imaging is difficult when the pancreatic parenchyma is compressed by a pseudocyst and becomes unclear. Despite advances in imaging techniques, accurate preoperative diagnosis of cystic lesions of the pancreas remains difficult. In this case, it was challenging to diagnose pancreatic cancer preoperatively as we could not accurately assess the pancreatic parenchyma, which had been compressed by a moderate-sized cystic lesion with e

BACKGROUND: Marfan syndrome is a rare inherited connective tissue disease, which may be present in patients who have advanced hip pathologies that may require total hip arthroplasty (THA). The postoperative course of patients who have Marfan syndrome following THA has not yet been defined.
METHODS: Adult patients who have and do not have Marfan syndrome and underwent THA were identified in a national database. Patients diagnosed who had infection, trauma, or neoplasms within the 90 days prior to surgery were excluded. Those who have versus those who did not have Marfan syndrome were matched 1

OBJECTIVE: To investigate if progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy (PML) incidence has increased in Finland like in the neighbouring Sweden.
METHODS: National administrative registries were searched for all PML admissions aged 16 years or more in 2004-2014 on all neurological and internal medicine wards in Finland. The mortality data of the patients was extracted from the national causes of death registry. National level data on annual predisposing drug use was obtained from the national pharmaceutical authority.
RESULTS: We identified 35 PML cases (57% male) with a peak in 2010-2011 th

Micro- and macrovascular pathology is a frequent finding in a number of common rheumatic diseases. Secondary Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) is among the most common symptoms in systemic sclerosis and several other systemic autoimmune diseases including a broad differential diagnosis. It should be also differential from other peripheral vascular syndromes such as embolism, thrombosis, etc., some of which lead to clinical manifestation of the blue toe syndrome. The current review discusses the instrumental methods for vascular assessments. Nailfold capillaroscopy is the only method among the imaging
