Tumor growth of the reticuloendothelial system.

From the author's hitherto studies on the reticuloendothelial system (RES) it was concluded that the RES is not a single cell system of identical origin, morphology and function but is a group of several types of cells of different origin. From this point of view the heterogeneity of tumors of the RES was studied to reveal the following results. Tumors of the "Reticuloendothel" (Aschoff) reveal pictures of endothelioma, while tumors of histiocytes in connective tissue show findings of fibrohistiocytoma. Histiocytes and reticulum cells of lymph nodes are respectively independent cells, and reti

Diagnostic and mutational spectrum of progressive osseous heteroplasia (POH) and other forms of GNAS-based heterotopic ossification.

Progressive osseous heteroplasia (POH) is a rare, disabling disease of heterotopic ossification (HO) that progresses from skin and subcutaneous tissues into deep skeletal muscle. POH occurs in the absence of multiple developmental features of Albright hereditary osteodystrophy (AHO) or hormone resistance, clinical manifestations that are also associated with GNAS inactivation. However, occasional patients with AHO and pseudohypoparathyroidism 1a/c (PHP1a/c; AHO features plus hormone resistance) have also been described who have progressive HO. This study was undertaken to define the diagnostic

June 2001: 61 year old woman with confusion and obtundation.

The June COM. A 61 year old female presents with a three week history of increasing confusion, lethargy and headache. A neurological exam revealed disorientation, mild expressive aphasia, bilateral papilledema, and a right pronator drift. She had a craniotomy and resection of tumor. The tumor histologically was consistent with a solitary fibrous tumor displaying malignant features of hypercellularity, marked nuclear atypia, high mitotic activity, and a high proliferation index. This case is unique as the first malignant variant of solitary fibrous tumor to be reported intracranially.

Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura: surgical outcome and clinical course.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to define more precisely the surgical outcome and clinical course of solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of the clinical records of patients who had undergone surgical resection for benign and malignant solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura during a 10-year period (1993 to 2003). RESULTS: Sixty-three patients were enrolled in the study (men, 29; women, 34; mean age, 49.6 years). Thirty-six patients (57.1%) were symptomatic at the time of diagnosis. Resection was performed through a thoracotomy (n = 37), by

Acquired von Willebrand syndrome with a type 2B phenotype: diagnostic and therapeutic dilemmas.

In this report, we provide evidence of an acquired von Willebrand syndrome (AVWS) with a type 2B phenotype rather than the expected type 1 or 2A. The patient was referred prior to surgical removal of a fibrous mass within the maxillary sinus. His first bleeding 7 years earlier following a retinal tear had been complicated by monocular blindness. Several mucocutanous bleedings followed. Hematological investigations revealed von Willebrand factor (VWF):Ag 91 IU/ml, factor VIII 86 IU/ml, VWF:RCo 34 IU/ml and profound thrombocytopenia with platelet clumping. VWF multimer analysis showed a loss of

A study of factor XIIIa and MAC 387 immunolabeling in normal and pathological skin.

Immunolabeling with two new antibodies, Factor XIIIa and MAC 387, has been studied in routinely processed biopsy specimens of normal skin, subcutaneous tissues, lymph nodes, and a variety of pathological conditions. These presumptive cell markers of the monocyte-macrophage lineage appear to label totally different and possibly mutually exclusive subsets of cells. In normal skin, Factor XIIIa labeled fixed dermal connective tissue cells, emphasizing their dendritic morphological appearance. Factor XIIIa expression in fibroproliferative conditions and spindle cell tumors varied: in particular, s

Adenomatoid tumors of the uterus: magnetic resonance imaging features with clinical and histopathologic correlation.

PURPOSE: Adenomatoid tumor (AT) of the uterus is a rare benign neoplasm of mesothelial origin. To date, few studies have reported the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings and clinicopathologic features of uterine ATs. This study aimed to summarize the MRI features of uterine ATs and relate them to their clinicopathologic findings, with the goal of improving the accuracy of preoperative diagnosis. METHODS: Sixteen surgically resected, histopathologically confirmed uterine ATs were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical data, imaging characteristics, and histopathologic findings were systemati

NFATc2-rearranged sarcomas: clinicopathologic, molecular, and cytogenetic study of 7 cases with evidence of AGGRECAN as a novel diagnostic marker.

NFATc2-rearranged sarcomas (NFATc2-Sarcomas) are infrequent round cell tumors characterized by EWSR1-NFATc2 fusions and FUS-NFATc2 fusions. Although our knowledge on these neoplasms has increased recently, novel diagnostic tools and more comprehensive series are still needed. Here, we describe the features of a series of seven molecularly confirmed NFATc2-Sarcomas (EWSR1-NFATc2, n = 4; FUS-NFATc2, n = 3) and demonstrate the utility of AGGRECAN immunohistochemistry for their identification. Patients were four males and three females, ranging in age from 19 to 66 years (median: 33). All were pri

Cellular angiofibroma and related fibromatous lesions of the vulva: report of a series of cases with a morphological spectrum wider than previously described.

AIMS: Cellular angiofibroma (CA) is a rare benign mesenchymal lesion with a predilection for the vulval region. In this report we aim to describe the clinical, pathological and immunohistochemical features of a series of vulval mesenchymal lesions, some of which have the classically described histological appearance of CA while others exhibit atypical features. We believe these lesions fall within the broad spectrum of fibromatous lesions of the vulva. METHODS AND RESULTS: Seven cases were included. Histological sections were examined and immunohistochemical staining with vimentin, desmin, al

Progressive Anterior Tibial Tumefaction: A Case of Unusual Bone Lesion.

Brown tumors are rare, non-neoplastic bone lesions caused by excessive bone remodeling due to hyperparathyroidism. Their estimated prevalence is approximately 3-5% in primary hyperparathyroidism and about 1.5% in secondary forms. Prolonged elevation of parathyroid hormone (PTH) stimulates osteoclastic activity, leading to progressive bone resorption and cortical disruption. These lesions develop through replacement of normal bone marrow by highly vascularized fibrous tissue, often accompanied by repeated microfractures and hemorrhage, resulting in pain, skeletal deformity, structural weakness,

Chronic expanding hematomas arising over a decade post primary total hip arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Chronic expanding hematoma (CEH) is an infrequent yet serious complication following total hip arthroplasty (THA). Mismanagement of this condition can result in severe consequences. The purpose of this study is to conduct a retrospective analysis of patients who developed CEH after THA at our institution over the past 20 years, complemented by a review of the existing literature. This comprehensive approach aims to contribute valuable clinical insights into the diagnosis and management of CEH. METHODS: In this study, we conducted a retrospective study of patients who had undergone

Cutaneous pleomorphic fibromas arising in patients with germline TP53 mutations.

Pleomorphic fibromas are rare benign cutaneous neoplasms associated with deletion/loss of chromosomes 13q and 17p, where RB1 and TP53 are located, respectively. Herein, we report five cases of pleomorphic fibroma arising in patients with germline TP53 mutations, suggesting a potential link with Li-Fraumeni syndrome. All three patients were female and young (mean age 27) with a strong personal and/or family oncologic history and confirmed pathogenic germline TP53 mutations. In two patients, multiple pleomorphic fibromas were diagnosed. Clinically, the lesions arose at various cutaneous sites an

[Solitary fibrous tumor: a clinico-morphological and immunohistochemical study].

Solitary fibrous tumor is a rare neoplasm which may occur at any site although it is more frequent in the pleura, mediastinum and lung. The study used 4 cases of tumor localization in the pleura and orbit. Three cases presented as a "hemangiopericytic" variety of spindle cells; there were numerous giant cells in orbit tumor. Solitary fibrous tumor revealed enhanced expression of vimentin, CD34, bel-2 and CD99. Expression of S-100, desmine and non-striated muscle actin was found in few cells in some cases. Such features as large size (over 10 cm), necrosis, high cellularity, nuclear polymorphis

A novel TJP1-ROS1 fusion in malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor responding to crizotinib: A case report.

RATIONALE: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) is a rare sarcoma. Owing to the lack of specific histological criteria, immunohistochemical, and molecular diagnostic markers, several differential diagnoses must be considered. Advances in molecular testing can provide significant insights for management of rare tumor. PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient was a 50-year-old man with a history of lumpectomy on the right back 30 years ago. He felt a stabbing pain at the right iliac fossa and went to the local hospital. DIAGNOSIS: By immunohistochemistry, the tumor cells stained positively for

On clinical usefulness of Tl-201 scintigraphy for the management of malignant soft tissue tumors.

The purpose of this study was to investigate Tl-201 as a tumor scanning agent in patients with malignant soft tissue sarcomas and to establish the sensitivity of this type of scintigraphy concerning local recurrences or metastases that may remain clinically suspected. Seventy-eight patients with malignant soft tissue sarcomas and 22 with benign soft tissue tumors were studied. Of these 78 malignant soft tissue sarcomas patients, the sensitivity of Tl-201 (81.2%) was higher than that of Ga-67 (68.8%). Thirty-three out of 78 patients received a total of 95 consecutive scintigraphic follow-up exa

[Reconstruction of the loss of bone substance of the forearm by cubitalization of the radius (one bone forearm). Apropos of 6 cases].

Extensive forearm bone loss, whatever its etiology, presents a difficult reconstruction problem. This is mainly the case in the presence of lesions of the interosseous membrane associated with the radio-ulnar joint. When preservation of forearm rotation is not possible, cubitalization of the radius and reconstruction of the forearm by creation of a "one bone forearm" seems to be an excellent salvage technique both functionally and cosmetically. Our experience concerns six clinical cases; two of these cases are original and give the authors the opportunity to describe a new reconstructive techn

Rare syndromes.

Dermatologists may also encounter patients presenting with skin lesions that reflect an underlying endocrine disorder not commonly seen in daily practice. Some of these endocrine disorders include glucagonoma, neurofibromatosis type 1, McCune-Albright syndrome, multiple endocrine neoplasia, the Carney complex, carcinoid tumors, and mastocytosis. The clinical syndrome classically associated with glucagonoma includes necrolytic migratory erythema, weight loss, diabetes mellitus, anemia, cheilitis, venous thrombosis, and neuropsychiatric symptoms. The hallmarks of neurofibromatosis type 1 are the
