A mutation at IVS1 + 5 of the von Hippel-Lindau gene resulting in intron retention in transcripts is not pathogenic in a patient with a tongue cancer?: case report.

BACKGROUND: Von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL) is a dominantly inherited familial cancer syndrome predisposing the patient to a variety of malignant and benign neoplasms, most frequently hemangioblastoma, renal cell carcinoma, pheochromocytoma, and pancreatic tumors. VHL is caused by mutations of the VHL tumor suppressor gene on the short arm of chromosome 3, and clinical manifestations develop if both alleles are inactivated according to the two-hit hypothesis. VHL mutations are more frequent in the coding region and occur occasionally in the splicing region of the gene. Previously, we reported

Epithelioid trophoblastic tumor: review of a rare neoplasm of the chorionic-type intermediate trophoblast.

We present a brief review of epithelioid trophoblastic tumor, a rare trophoblastic neoplasm derived from chorionic-type intermediate trophoblastic cells that typically presents in reproductive-age women between 1 and 18 years following a previous gestation. Histologic features include a nodular growth pattern of monomorphic, epithelioid cells within a hyaline matrix. Areas of necrosis and mitotic activity (0-9 mitoses per 10 high-power fields) are additional features of this neoplasm. Positive immunostaining for p63 and cytokeratin, frequent location in the lower uterine segment and endocervix

Syringomatous tumor of the nipple.

The authors describe two women with locally infiltrative neoplasms of the nipple that exhibited sweat duct differentiation. The findings are compared with those previously recorded for syringomatous adenoma of the nipple. The patients presented with firm, subareolar nodules. Nests, cords, and ducts composed of cytologically uniform squamous cells were dispersed throughout the dermis and also involved subcutaneous tissue and adjacent breast parenchyma. Small keratocysts formed a minor component of the lesions. Additional observations in the present study included connections between tumor and e

Dual Biological Aggressiveness in Gastric MiNEN With Squamous Differentiation: A Case of Rapid Postoperative Peritoneal Dissemination.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Mixed neuroendocrine-non-neuroendocrine neoplasms (MiNENs) are rare epithelial malignancies characterized by the coexistence of neuroendocrine and non-neuroendocrine components, each accounting for at least 30% of the tumor. Gastric MiNENs with squamous differentiation are extremely rare. Herein, we report a rare case of gastric MiNEN with focal squamous differentiation, highlighting its aggressive clinical course, early peritoneal dissemination within three months after curative resection, and pathological heterogeneity. CASE REPORT: An 89-year-old man presented with melena a

Magnetic resonance permeability for the evaluation of head and neck tumors: Parotid and beyond.

Head and neck cancer is the seventh most common cancer globally, with over 300 thousand deaths annually. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of head and neck tumors is a well-known method for its evaluation, although malignant and benign imaging tumors often overlap. Permeability is an advanced method performed by MRI that assist in the diagnosis and evaluation of the neoplasm treatments, having a well-established role in some cases, such as salivary gland tumors, and promising in others, such as squamous cell carcinoma and lymph node evaluation. This pictorial review aims to demonstrate the dive

A suspected squamous cell carcinoma in a renal transplant recipient revealing a rare cutaneous phaeohyphomycosis by Alternaria infectoria.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin is the most common neoplasm after organ transplantation. In addition, fungal infections are increasingly described in immunocompromised patients, such as kidney recipients. METHOD AND RESULTS: We report a case of a 64-year-old woman with a renal transplant presenting with 6-month-old skin lesions. In other centers, she had undergone previous biopsies, the results of which were suggestive of squamous cell carcinoma and aspecific inflammation. Therefore, she came to our center for surgical excision. Only our clinical experience and a detailed clin

Adenosquamous carcinoma of the right colon: A case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Adenosquamous carcinoma is a rare colorectal tumor with both an adenocarcinoma and a squamous cell carcinoma component. To the best of our knowledge, only few cases have been reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 46-year-old woman, hospitalized for large bowel obstruction syndrome. Computed tomography scan showed an irregular mass of the right colic angle, responsible for an occlusive syndrome with distension of the right colon, the appendix and the terminal ileum. The patient underwent right hemicolectomy with D2 lymphadenectomy. Histopathological

Overview of the 2022 WHO Classification of Thyroid Neoplasms.

This review summarizes the changes in the 5th edition of the WHO Classification of Endocrine and Neuroendocrine Tumors that relate to the thyroid gland. The new classification has divided thyroid tumors into several new categories that allow for a clearer understanding of the cell of origin, pathologic features (cytopathology and histopathology), molecular classification, and biological behavior. Follicular cell-derived tumors constitute the majority of thyroid neoplasms. In this new classification, they are divided into benign, low-risk, and malignant neoplasms. Benign tumors include not only

Vulvar and Anal Intraepithelial Neoplasia: Terminology, Diagnosis, and Ancillary Studies.

Currently, it is recognized that there is an HPV-related and an HPV-independent pathway to developing squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) in the anus and vulva. The majority of precursor lesions and SCC in the anus and vulva are high-risk HPV-associated, with HPV16 the most common type. Given the morphologic overlap and biological equivalence of HPV-related preinvasive squamous lesions of the lower anogenital tract, a unified, 2-tiered histopathologic nomenclature is now recommended. In contrast, mutations in the TP53 gene have been associated with HPV-independent vulvar and anal SCC. A precursor l

Expression of p150 in cervical neoplasia and its potential value in predicting survival.

BACKGROUND: A recently cloned novel p150 protein was found to be overexpressed in human breast carcinoma. To the authors' knowledge, no data on p150 expression in any other human tumors have been published previously. METHODS: To investigate whether the expression of p150 correlated with the clinicopathologic stages of cervical neoplasms or the prognoses of patients with these neoplasms, the authors conducted an immunohistochemical study of archival formalin fixed, paraffin embedded specimens. Seventy-two precancerous lesions (CIN), 75 clinical Stage IB invasive squamous carcinomas, and 20 sa

Plasmacytoid squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva.

Although neoplastic cells with a plasmacytoid appearance have been reported in a variety of tumors, to the best of our knowledge, a plasmacytoid squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the vulva or skin has heretofore not been described. We document the case of a 92-year-old female patient with a history of multiple excisions for vulvar verrucous and SCCs, who presented with a 3-cm, symptomatic, polypoid mass of the left upper vulva. Histologically, sheets of dyscohesive relatively monotonous plasmacytoid and spindle cells were found dispersed throughout the dermis. The neoplastic cells expressed cyt

p16 overexpression in high-grade neuroendocrine carcinomas of the head and neck: potential diagnostic pitfall with HPV-related carcinomas.

High-grade neuroendocrine carcinomas (HGNECs) of the head and neck have the morphological appearance of undifferentiated carcinomas and could be histologically similar to human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated non-keratinizing squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck. The aim of the study is to characterize histologically, immunohistochemically, and virologically these unusual neoplasms. Nineteen HGNECs of the head and neck (1 oropharyngeal, 5 sinonasal, 7 of the larynx, and 6 of the parotid gland) were reviewed and analyzed with a immunohistochemical panel, with special emphasis on cell c

Case Report: Atypical ocular surface squamous cell carcinoma.

Ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) is the most common ocular surface neoplasm. Ocular surface squamous cell carcinoma (OS-SCC) represents the invasive malignant component within the spectrum of OSSN. The patient in this case report presented with manifestations resembling herpes simplex keratitis at the initial visit, without the typical clinical features of OS-SCC. The diagnosis was revised after close follow-up, and the patient achieved improvement with anti-metabolite therapy. At the time of recurrence, the clinical manifestations were similar to scleral abscess, still without the typ

Leptomeningeal dissemination of a poorly differentiated carcinoma involving the trigeminal ganglion in a horse: a case report.

Neoplastic conditions involving cranial nerves are uncommon in horses and represent a significant diagnostic challenge. Leptomeningeal dissemination is a recognized mechanism of tumor progression in aggressive neoplasms but is rarely reported in this species. A 15-year-old mixed-breed horse with a history of periocular squamous cell carcinoma treated by enucleation three years earlier developed progressive neurological signs. Initial differential diagnoses included metastatic neoplasia and equine protozoal myeloencephalitis. Due to rapid neurological deterioration, euthanasia and necropsy were

Recurrent inverted papilloma coexisted with skull base lymphoma: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Inverted papilloma is an uncommon neoplasm in the nasal cavity. It is a histologically benign tumor, but has a high recurrence and local invasion rate. In addition, nasal or skull base lymphoma is another rare neoplasm. The coexistence of these two tumors in one case makes the diagnosis and related treatment difficult. CASE SUMMARY: We report a case of an immunocompetent patient, who had a history of inverted papilloma 20 years ago. The patient presented with an infiltrated mass lesion in the nasal cavity with extension to the frontal base. The repeated biopsies revealed inverted

Early Arising Sarcoma After Adjuvant Radiotherapy for Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Radiation-induced sarcoma of the head and neck (RISHN) is a rare and long-term complication of radiation therapy (RT). This report describes a case of RISHN characterized by early and insidious onset. An 80-year-old man was surgically treated for advanced oral squamous cell carcinoma of the left retromolar trigone (pT4aN0). Sixteen months after completion of adjuvant RT, an exophytic sessile lesion arose in the left border of the soft palate. Histologic assessment showed a malignant neoplasm with spindle-shaped cells and areas of bone matrix without perivascular or perineural invasion; such fe

Molecular characterization, prevalence and clinical relevance of Phodopus sungorus papillomavirus type 1 (PsuPV1) naturally infecting Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus).

Phodopus sungorus papillomavirus type 1 (PsuPV1), naturally infecting Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) and clustering in the genus Pipapillomavirus (Pi-PV), is only the second PV type isolated from the subfamily of hamsters. In silico analysis of three independent complete viral genomes obtained from cervical adenocarcinoma, oral squamous cell carcinoma and normal oral mucosa revealed that PsuPV1 encodes characteristic viral proteins (E1, E2, E4, E6, E7, L1 and L2) with conserved functional domains and a highly conserved non-coding region. The overall high prevalence (102/114; 89.5 %) of
