How is hippocampal learning, including place learning, translated into behavior? The hippocampus integrates, along its septotemporal axis, substrates of rapid place learning, including entorhinal-hippocampal connectivity, with functional connectivity to subcortical sites and prefrontal cortex, which play central roles in behavioral-control functions, including sensorimotor, emotional, motivational, attentional, and executive functions. I present recent evidence that such integration, for which the intermediate hippocampus is a key neuroanatomical substrate, enables translation of rapid place l

In the brainstem, lateral and vertical eye movements are controlled by separate structures, the former mainly in the pons and the latter in the midbrain. The abducens nucleus (VI) in the pons controls all ipsilateral eye movements, i.e., ipsilateral saccades as well as the horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). This nucleus contains the abduction motoneurons, but also the internuclear neurons involved in adduction, passing through the contralateral medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) before relaying in the third-nerve nucleus in the midbrain. Lesions affecting the abducens nucleus result i

Observing another individual acting upon an object triggers cerebral activity well beyond the visual cortex of the observer in areas directly involved in planning and executing actions. This we will call action simulation. Importantly, the brain does not solely simulate the actions of others but also the sensations they feel, and their emotional responses. These simulation mechanisms are most active in individuals who report being very empathic. Simulation may indeed be instrumental for our understanding of the emotional and mental state of people in our sight, and may contribute heavily to th

We present a systems-oriented histopathologic analysis of the ocular motor control circuits in the cerebellum and brainstem from a patient with a hereditary form of olivopontine cerebellar atrophy of the Wadia type, which has a characteristic ocular motor presentation of slow saccades but relative preservation of smooth pursuit and gaze-holding. This differential pattern of clinical involvement is associated with a lobule-specific pattern of cerebellar degeneration. We asked whether these patterns of sparing and degeneration were consistent throughout the associated deep cerebellar and brainst

Neurostimulation is an emerging treatment for neurological diseases. Different types of neurostimulation exist mainly depending of the part of the nervous system that is being affected and the way this stimulation is being administered. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a neurophysiological treatment for patients with medically or surgically refractory epilepsy. Over 30,000 patients have been treated with VNS. No clear predictive factors for responders have been identified. To date, the precise mechanism of action remains to be elucidated. Better insight in the mechanism of action may identify

Four main theories on the pathophysiology of generalized absence seizures have been proposed. The "centrencephalic" theory, proposed in 1954, suggested that discharges originate from a deep-seated diffusely projecting subcortical pacemaker in the midline thalamus. This concept was refined in 1991 with the "thalamic clock" theory, implying that the reticular thalamic nucleus contains the pacemaker cells for the thalamic clock, imposing its rhythm to the cortex. According to other investigators, however, the cortex seems to play a leading role. They suggested that spike-wave discharges have a fo

The pathophysiology of spontaneous upbeat (UBN) and downbeat (DBN) nystagmus is reviewed in the light of several instructive clinical findings and experimental data. UBN due to pontine lesions could result from damage to the ventral tegmental tract (VTT), originating in the superior vestibular nucleus (SVN), coursing through the ventral pons and transmitting excitatory upward vestibular signals to the third nerve nucleus. A VTT lesion probably leads to relative hypoactivity of the drive to the motoneurons of the elevator muscles with, consequently, an imbalance between the downward and upward

Mosquitoes are heavily dependent on gustatory information when feeding. Following the recent elucidation of the molecular basis of gustation in the malaria mosquito, we present a detailed study of primary central projections of gustatory receptor neurons into the brain in the malaria (Anopheles gambiae) and yellow fever (Aedes aegypti) mosquito. In the brain we provide a detailed map of the areas targeted and describe a number of intrinsic neural elements connecting primary taste areas to higher brain levels. The morphological features described are discussed and compared to earlier reports in

The origin of the nervus terminalis is one of the least well understood developmental events involved in generating the cranial ganglia of the forebrain in vertebrate animals. This cranial nerve forms at the formidable interface of the anteriormost limits of migrating cranial neural crest cells, the terminal end of the neural tube and the differentiating olfactory and adenohypophyseal placodes. The complex cellular interactions that give rise to the various structures associated with the sensory placode (olfactory) and endocrine placode (adenohypophysis) surround and engulf this enigmatic cran

The parenchymal cells of the mammalian pineal gland are the hormone-producing pinealocytes and the interstitial cells. In addition, perivascular phagocytes are present. The phagocytes share antigenic properties with microglial and antigen-presenting cells. In certain species, the pineal gland also contains neurons and/or neuron-like peptidergic cells. The peptidergic cells might influence the pinealocyte by a paracrine secretion of the peptide. Nerve fibers innervating the mammalian pineal gland originate from perikarya located in the sympathetic superior cervical ganglion and the parasympathe

Orthopaedic, neurosurgical, and trauma nurses all care for patients who have sustained a spinal cord injury (SCI) and are challenged to address care issues related to spinal stability as well as neurologic function. Advances in the understanding of the pathobiology of SCI have given rise to a three-tiered, time-sensitive approach to intervention designed to optimize functional recovery. Immediately after injury, pharmacologic strategies dominate. They are generally intended to limit progression of the initial injury, preserve existing neurologic function, and create the nidus for future regene

Processing of multimodal sensory information by the morphological subdivisions of the hippocampus and its input and output structures was investigated in unanesthetized rabbits by extracellular recording of neuronal activity. Analysis shows principal differences between CA3 neurons with uniform multimodal, mainly inhibitory, rapidly habituating sensory responses, and CA1-subicular neurons, substantial parts of which have phasic reactions and patterned on-responses, depending on the characteristics of the stimuli. These differences result from the organization of the afferent inputs to CA1 and

Two strategies used to uncover neural systems for episodic-like memory in animals are discussed: (i) an attribute of episodic memory (what? when? where?) is examined in order to reveal the neuronal interactions supporting that component of memory; and (ii) the connections of a structure thought to be central to episodic memory in humans are studied at a level of detail not feasible in humans. By focusing on spatial memory (where?) and the hippocampus, it has proved possible to bring the strategies together. A review of lesion, disconnection and immediate early-gene studies in animals reveals t

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of adjuvant guided imagery on patients with chronic tension-type headache.
BACKGROUND: Management of chronic tension-type headache often requires a combination of pharmacological and nonpharmacological therapies. Guided imagery is a relaxation technique based on visualizing pleasant images and body awareness.
METHODS: One hundred twenty-nine patients with chronic tension-type headache completed the Headache Disability Inventory and the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form (SF-36) at their initial visit to a specialty headache center and again 1 month after the

The pineal organ of the sturgeon (Acipenser baeri; Chondrostei) consists of an elongated terminal vesicle and a long stalk that runs to the region of the posterior commissure. In order to investigate the neural connections of the pineal organ of the surgeon, a fluorescent indocarbocyanine (DiI) was applied to the pineal stalk of paraformaldehyde-fixed brains. This application strongly labeled the pineal tracts (right and left), which form an extensive bilateral projection to the brain. The fibers of these tracts could be followed to their different targets in the brain, namely the preoptic reg

The circadian timing system is a neural network consisting of the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus, aided by the retina, other hypothalamic nuclei, autonomic regions of the spinal cord, sympathetic ganglia and the pineal gland. Extensive studies conducted over the last two decades have unravelled the principal items of its functional neuroanatomy. The system is responsible for the generation of the circadian rhythm, its synchronization by environmental factors such as light, and its mediation with respect to morphological, physiological and biochemical parameters of mammals that exhibit di

Telencephalic cortex in turtles is a simple three layered-structure. The dorsal most part of this structure is thought to resemble the reptilian forerunner of at least parts of mammalian isocortex. This dorsal part of turtle cortex contains several functionally distinct regions that show similarity in their connections and function to specific areas in mammalian isocortex. The types of neurons found in turtle dorsal cortex (as defined by their morphology and neurotransmitter content) also show great similarity to those observed in mammals, with the major exception that turtle cortex appears to
