[Winners of globalization: dengue viruses and Japanese encephalitis virus-Diseases in neurology].

Arboviruses are transmitted by arthropods, more than 100 of them are human pathogens and many of the arboviruses have neurotropic characteristics such as dengue viruses (DENV) and Japanese encephalitis virus (JE-V). Both DENV and JE-V belong to the genus Flavivirus. Climatic changes, food imports from the tropics and travel behavior have also increased the number of cases of diseases caused by tropical or subtropical viruses in Europe. Due to the close degree of relationship of the flaviviruses, coinfections with several arboviruses can occur. The DENV and JE-V are mosquito-borne infections ca

Nursing review section of Surgical Neurology International: Part 1 lumbar disc disease.

BACKGROUND: Patients with lumbar disc disease may present with low back pain, pain that radiates down to the lower extremity (radiculopathy), and leg pain that increases with ambulation (neurogenic claudication). Patients may first undergo diagnostic studies (magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomographic examinations) to determine whether there is any significant nerve root or thecal sac compression. METHODS: Increasingly, patients with low back pain with/without radiculopathy are being screened by nurses rather than by neurologists or neurosurgeons/orthopedists. Recognition of the basic n

[German neurology and neurologists during the Third Reich: brain research and "euthanasia"].

The connection between systematic killing of the mentally ill and disabled, euphemistically called "euthanasia" in the National Socialism ideology, and German brain research has been thoroughly investigated and in detail; however, the impact of this criminal nexus on the image and self-perception of German neurologists as well as the status of neurology as a medical discipline is still the subject of controversial debates.Between 1939 and 1945 the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute (KWI) in Berlin along with other research centres were insofar enmeshed in the "euthanasia" program as brains of killed pat…

Implementation of Intranasal Midazolam for Prolonged Seizures in a Child Neurology Practice.

Currently, evidence supports the use of intranasal midazolam as an effective, and in many cases, preferable treatment option for prolonged seizures in children. Despite this knowledge, intranasal midazolam is not routinely found as a standard of care. The goal of this project was to implement the use of intranasal midazolam as a rescue medication for prolonged seizures within a child neurology practice and, in doing so, create a model for implementation that would be replicable for other practice sites. This project focused on the development of a process to make intranasal midazolam available…

[The role of experience in the neurology of facial expression of emotions].

INTRODUCTION: Facial expression of emotion has an important social function that facilitates interaction between people. This process has a neurological basis, which is not isolated from the context, or the experience of the interaction between people in that context. Yet, to date, the impact that experience has on the perception of emotions is not completely understood. AIMS: To discuss the role of experience in the recognition of facial expression of emotions and to analyze the biases towards emotional perception. DEVELOPMENT: The maturation of the structures that support the ability to re

The seminal role played by Pierre Marie in Neurology and Internal Medicine.

The authors review the most important contributions of Pierre Marie to the elucidation and description of several neurological diseases, such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth's disease and hereditary cerebellar ataxia, as well as his contributions to Internal Medicine, including his pioneering studies on acromegaly, ankylosing spondylitis, and hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy. His works led to incontestable advances in the medical sciences that transcended his time.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy and JC Virus-related disease in modern neurology practice.

The natural history and clinical import of Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy has changed enormously in the last thirty years. After a resurgence of PML during the HIV/AIDS epidemic, advances in the treatment of multiple sclerosis created another group of 'at risk' patients. With a focus on issues pertaining to the multiple sclerosis patient population, this review covers pathophysiology of the JC virus, causes of PML, mechanisms by which natalizumab increases the risk of PML, determinants of PML risk in natalizumab-treated patients, risks of natalizumab discontinuation, PML prevention

Bridging neuroanatomy, neuroradiology and neurology: three-dimensional interactive atlas of neurological disorders.

Understanding brain pathology along with the underlying neuroanatomy and the resulting neurological deficits is of vital importance in medical education and clinical practice. To facilitate and expedite this understanding, we created a three-dimensional (3D) interactive atlas of neurological disorders providing the correspondence between a brain lesion and the resulting disorder(s). The atlas contains a 3D highly parcellated atlas of normal neuroanatomy along with a brain pathology database. Normal neuroanatomy is divided into about 2,300 components, including the cerebrum, cerebellum, brainst

Impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease: crossroads between neurology, psychiatry and neuroscience.

Non-motor symptoms contribute significantly to Parkinson's disease (PD) related disability. Impulse control disorders (ICDs) have been recently added to the behavioural spectrum of PD-related non-motor symptoms. Such behaviours are characterized by an inappropriate drive to conduct repetitive behaviours that are usually socially inadequate or result in harmful consequences. Parkinson disease impulse control disorders (PD-ICDs) have raised significant interest in the scientific and medical community, not only because of their incapacitating nature, but also because they may represent a valid mo

Child neurology: Brachial plexus birth injury: what every neurologist needs to know.

While most often transient, brachial plexus birth injury can cause permanent neurologic injury. The major risk factors for brachial plexus birth injury are fetal macrosomia and shoulder dystocia. The degree of injury to the brachial plexus should be determined in the neonatal nursery, as those infants with the most severe injury--root avulsion--should be referred early for surgical evaluation so that microsurgical repair of the plexus can occur by 3 months of life. Microsurgical repair options include nerve grafts and nerve transfers. All children with brachial plexus birth injury require ongo

[Undetected Hashimoto encephalopathy--a diagnostic challenge in child psychiatry and child neurology].

The literature is reviewed. Hashimoto encephalopathy is a steroid-responsive encephalopathy associated with Hashimoto thyroiditis (SREHT). The incidence of SREHT in childhood is underestimated. Two subtypes have been described. The diffuse progressive type is associated with insidious onset and progressive impairment of mental status, such as confusion, somnolence, and psychosis. The vasculitic type is characterized by acute stroke-like episodes associated with focal neurologic features and seizures. Hashimoto encephalopathy (SREHT) is a clinical condition with elevated thyroid antibody titers

Weir Mitchell's observations on sensory localization and their influence on Jacksonian neurology.

BACKGROUND: John Hughlings Jackson (1835-1911) in London was critical in advancing the concept of cerebral localization. Hughlings Jackson, however, did not work in a vacuum. Silas Weir Mitchell (1829-1914), in Philadelphia, published several clinical observations related to localization. OBJECTIVE: To examine Weir Mitchell's clinical observations on sensory localization, to determine whether they influenced Jacksonian neurology, and to elucidate the private relationship between the two men. METHODS: The authors reviewed published (fictional and scientific writings of Weir Mitchell and scien…

Hereditary ataxias and paediatric neurology: new movers and shakers enter the field.

Over 25 autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive spinocerebellar ataxias have been isolated over the last decade. The recognition of paediatric ataxia phenotypes and, in addition, other movement disorders including hereditary choreiform and parkinsonian syndromes, has improved our knowledge of these diseases. Advances in molecular genetics has allowed fuller delineation and better recognition of these diseases.
