Neuropathological findings in intractable epilepsy: 435 Chinese cases.

The number of patients with intractable epilepsy undergoing surgical management in China is increasing rapidly. We retrospectively reviewed … poral location and usually accompanied by cortical dysplasia in the peritumor area. Our data on the neuropathology of intractable epilepsy in China show that glioneuronal lesions are the most prominent cause of intractable epilepsy, and this is consistent with reports from other countries.

Three unusual neuropathologic-related causes of sudden death.

We discuss the autopsy findings of three medico-legal cases of sudden death associated with uncommon neuropathologic findings of which the general forensic pathologist may not be familiar. Case 1 was a 43-year-old man who died of a seizure due to malignant melanoma of the temporal lobe associated with neurocutaneous melanosis (NCM). Case 2 was a 57-year-old woman with a history of mental retardation and incoordination because of chronic lead poisoning, who died of a pulmonary thromboembolism due to deep venous thrombosis status post left leg fracture after a fall down a staircase. Autopsy reve

Neuropathological analysis in spinal muscular atrophy type II.

We performed a neuropathological analysis, including in situ nick end labeling (ISEL) and immunohistochemistry, of two cases of clinicogenetically confirmed infantile spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type II. Both cases showed severe reduction of the motor neurons and gliosis in the spinal cord and brain stem, although the occurrences of central chromatolysis and ballooned neurons were not frequent. Clark's and lateral thalamic nuclei, which are usually altered in SMA type I, were spared, whereas Betz cells in the precentral gyrus and large myelinated fibers in the lateral funiculus were reduced

Neuropathological characterisation of French bovine spongiform encephalopathy cases.

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle is a neurodegenerative disease belonging to the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, a group of diseases including sheep scrapie and human Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The pathological characteristics of BSE are vacuolation, mild gliosis, little neuronal degeneration without inflammatory process and abnormal prion protein (PrPsc) accumulation. The aim of this study was to define precisely the neuropathology of BSE in French cases by assessing the distributions of vacuolar lesions and PrPsc within cattle brains. We showed that vacuolation and…

Office of Rare Diseases neuropathologic criteria for corticobasal degeneration.

A working group supported by the Office of Rare Diseases of the National Institutes of Health formulated neuropathologic criteria for corticobasal degeneration (CBD) that were subsequently validated by an independent group of neuropathologists. The criteria do not require a specific clinical phenotype, since CBD can have diverse clinical presentations, such as progressive asymmetrical rigidity and apraxia, progressive aphasia, or frontal lobe dementia. Cortical atrophy, ballooned neurons, and degeneration of the substantia nigra have been emphasized in previous descriptions and are present in

[Thanatophoric dysplasia: report of 2 cases with neuropathological study].

We report two cases of thanatophoric dysplasia (TD) with detailed neuropathologic evaluation. One case was representative of TD type I and the other TD type II. The case with TD type I showed macrocephaly, narrow thoracic cage, pulmonary hypoplasia and bowed limbs. Radiological study showed flat vertebral bodies, short curved appendicular skeleton and flaring of metaphyses. The other case (TD type 2) showed macrocephaly, cleft palate, short limbs and cloverleaf skull. Radiological findings were generalized platyspondy with excessive intervertebral disc space heights and a large head. Microscop

Neuropathological findings in a patient with epilepsy and the Parry-Romberg syndrome.

PURPOSE: The Parry-Romberg syndrome is an unusual disorder frequently associated with epilepsy. The origin of this disease, and the cause of epilepsy, are unknown. This study is the first reported case of the Parry-Romberg syndrome, with intractable temporal lobe epilepsy, in which detailed microanatomic analyses have been performed on resected brain tissue obtained after surgical intervention. METHODS: Standard histopathologic methods and correlative light and electron microscopy, combined with immunocytochemical techniques, were used to study in detail the synaptic microorganization of the

Neuropathologic differentiation of progressive supranuclear palsy and corticobasal degeneration.

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and corticobasal degeneration (CBD) are usually sporadic multi-system degenerations associated with filamentous tau inclusions in neurons and glia. As such they can be considered sporadic tauopathies in contrast to familial tauopathies linked to mutations in the tau gene. Mutations have not been found in the tau gene in either PSP or CBD. The clinical syndromes and neuroimaging of typical cases of PSP and CBD are distinct; however, atypical cases are described that have overlapping clinical and pathologic features. Both PSP and CBD have similar biochemical

[Fulminant subacute sclerosing panencephalitis: clinical and neuropathological observations].

We describe a 3-year-old boy with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) who died 4 months after its onset. His initial symptoms were drowsiness and left hemiplegia. He became comatose in 10 days, and developed a decortical posture after 45 days. He suffered from multiple cerebral hemorrhage and infarction 3 months later. Oligodendrocytes were positively stained by immunocytochemical stain with a complement-fixing measles antibody. Light microscopy revealed glial nodules, perivascular cuffing and reactive gliosis. Small arteries showed intimal thickening with resultant occlusion and occasi

Clinical, neuropathological and genetic aspects of the tuberous sclerosis complex.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant syndrome in which patients develop hamartomatous lesions in the nervous system and a host of other organs. While considerable experience has been gained in defining the clinical spectrum of TSC, a number of nosological questions remain. Neuropathological studies have continued to refine our knowledge of the nervous system abnormalities that characterize TSC. Molecular genetic studies have implicated two chromosomal regions in the genesis of TSC, one on chromosome 9q and the other on chromosome 16p. The chromosome 16p gene, designated TS

[Neuromalaria: neuropathological study of 3 cases and review of the literature].

Human Cerebral Malaria (HCM) is an encephalopathy which occurs in some patients infected with P. falciparum (PF). Besides people in the endemic tropical-subtropical zones there is a numerically smaller group of non immune visitors or returning from which are at risk for disease. The histological classical hallmarks of HCM are sequestration of PF-infected erythrocytes in vessels, cerebral oedema, petechial hemorrhages "ring hemorrhages" and so-called Dürk's granulomas. Even though the histological and clinical picture are described for more than a century, some aspects of the pathogenesis of th

Quantitative analysis of neuropathologic changes in the cerebral cortex of centenarians.

1. The quantitative distribution of neurofibrillary tangles and senile plaques was studied in the brains of 65 elderly patients aged from 96 to 104 years by immunohistochemistry. 2. According to the clinical and neuropathological diagnoses, three groups of cases were considered: 19 patients with Alzheimer's disease, 22 patients with mixed dementia (vascular and degenerative) and 24 patients with no or very mild cognitive impairment. 3. Moderate to high neurofibrillary tangle densities were always present in the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex. The inferior temporal cortex was very frequently

Neuropathological correlates of memory dysfunction in the Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.

The Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome is a neuropathological term which encompasses two clinical syndromes in thiamine-deficient alcoholics, Wernicke's encephalopathy and Korsakoff's psychosis. Wernicke's encephalopathy is characterised by eye and gait disorders and mental confusion, and can lead to the profound and permanent amnesia known as Korsakoff's psychosis. Despite this specific difference, both conditions appear to have identical neuropathology with haemorrhages and other lesions around the ventricular system. The memory deficit has been attributed to a number of brain lesions, including a …

Neuropathological diagnosis with stereotactic biopsies. Possibilities, difficulties and requirements.

The present paper is based on stereotactic biopsies (SB) of 870 patients during the last 20 years. Approximately 700 patients suffered with brain tumour. Dementias and various diseases such as vasculopathies, leucoencephalopathies and inflammatory lesions were diagnosed in the other cases. Three groups of problems can be diagnosed with SB: 1) deeply located brain lesions; 2) early stages of lesions and diffuse or multiple lesions detected with imaging techniques; 3) some progressive dementing or degenerative diseases. Multiple (generally 4 to 6) SB should be taken in the vicinity and various p

Anorectal anomaly: neuropathological changes in the sacral spinal cord.

The study was carried out on the bodies of five full-term newborn babies and 10 newborn patients with anorectal anomalies (four of whom had the high deformity, one had the intermediate, and five had the low). Serial transverse sections of the sacral spinal cords at 30 microns were made and stained with Nissle's. It was found that in the medial column of the sacral spinal cord there were two groups of motoneurons: posteriomedian group (group A) and anteriomedian group (group B). The former was found mainly in S3 and S4 and the latter extended from caudal S4 to caudal S2. In six of the 10 deform

Neuropathological studies in the brains of AIDS patients with opportunistic diseases.

The brains of 70 fatal cases with AIDS were studied by means of immunohistochemistry and in-situ hybridization in a consecutive autopsy series (1985-July 1992). In addition, the neuropathological changes were correlated with the neurological and neuroimaging findings. Opportunistic infections included toxoplasmosis (15 cases), cytomegalovirus (CMV)-encephalitis (6), progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy (2) and fungal infections (3). Malignant lymphomas were found in 7 patients; 6 involved primarily the CNS, one was metastatic. In 14 cases the neuropathological changes were consistent wit

[Neurologic changes in congenital heart diseases: a neuropathologic study].

A neuropathologic study in 190 consecutive autopsies of patients with congenital cardiopathy was performed: 116 cases underwent a surgical procedure (S group) and the remaining 74 were non-surgical (NS group). Neuropathologic alterations were observed in 71 cases (41 in the S group and 30 in the NS group). However, most of the 129 cases with a normal examination had died in the first 72 hours either after surgery or the clinical events responsible for the death. Almost all the neuropathologic alterations were hypoxic ischemic. Infarctions, single or multiple, were found in 41 cases (23 in the

[Neuropathological study of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in relation to aging].

It has been assumed that amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) involves precocious senility as one of its pathogenetic aspects. The authors studied 55 autopsied cases of ALS in relation to age at death, ranging from 42 to 86. The materials consisted of 8 cases in the fifth decade, 8 in the sixth, 20 in the seventh, 12 in the eighth, and 7 in the ninth. The total duration of illness ranged from 6 months to 14 years. The most distinct relationship was observed in the anterior horn lesion of the cervical enlargement which became less severe with advancing age, irrespective of the length of illness.

Severe type Hunter's syndrome. Polysomnographic and neuropathological study.

The clinico-pathological and polysomnographical findings of an adult male patient with severe type of Hunter's syndrome are presented. He died of respiratory failure aged 19, which was much older than the average in this disease. Mucopolysaccharidosis was suspected at the age of one year, and diagnosed by leucocyte enzyme assay at 4 years of age. Mental and physical activity gradually deteriorated until his death. He often showed central type sleep apnea during the sleep stage 2, in addition to common obstructive apnea in Hunter's syndrome. The autopsy showed marked fibrous thickening of the e
