Many different methodologies and paradigms are available to guide surgery of supratentorial tumors with the aim to preserve quality of life of the patients and to increase the extent of tumor resection. Neurophysiologic monitoring techniques (such as different evoked potentials) may help to continuously assess functional integrity of the observed systems and warn about vascular injury. For neurophysiologic mapping methods, the focus is not only to preserve cortical sites, but also to prevent injury to subcortical pathways. Therefore, cortical mapping is not enough but should be combined with s

The use of virtual reality (VR) has made significant advancements, and now it is widely used across a range of applications. However, consumers' capacity to fully enjoy VR experiences continues to be limited by a chronic problem known as cybersickness (CS). This study explores the feasibility of mitigating CS through geometric scene simplification combined with electroencephalography (EEG)-based monitoring. According to the sensory conflict theory, this issue is caused by the discrepancy between the visually induced self-motion (VIMS) through immersive displays and the real motion the vestibul

INTRODUCTION: Intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (IONM) had important role related to the complications in spinal surgery. Somatosensory Evoked Potential (SSEP), Transcranial electric Muscle Evoked Potentials (tceMEPs), and free run EMG are parameters used to asses functional integrity of the nervous system during surgical procedures. Once warning signal was recognized, surgeon have to make a precise decision to overcome that problem.

Detecting errors is crucial for adapting one's own actions. Moreover, behavior is often optimized by adapting to maladaptive actions, i.e. errors. In this regard, recent studies and models of error monitoring point to an involvement of emotional states in error monitoring. A psychophysiological correlate of the latter is the error negativity or error-related negativity (Ne/ERN), reflecting partly the functional implementation of anterior cingulate cortex functions. In the present study, we aimed to test whether neurophysiological aspects of error monitoring can be altered by a relaxation techn

BACKGROUND/AIM: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common and disabling side-effect of various chemotherapeutic agents. This scoping review aimed to systematically map the existing literature on diagnostic methods used to identify, assess, and monitor CIPN. The review was guided by the research question: "What diagnostic methods have been used in the literature to identify, assess, or monitor chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy in adult cancer patients?"
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library from 2000 to 2024. St

Although multiple concurrent spinal arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) are a well-known anatomical and clinical entity, the management of these lesions and timing of surgical intervention is still a matter of debate.A 74-year-old man with a 2-year history of progressive weakness of both lower limbs and lower back pain was diagnosed angiographically with a thoracic DAVF. During the surgical procedure, double independent spinal DAVFs were identified. With the aid of neurophysiologic monitoring, we proceeded to the closure of both fistulas in a one-step surgery.Neurophysiologic monitoring represents

Intensive research in the field of intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring has been performed directed at finding reliable stimulating and recording techniques and adequate anesthetic regimes applicable to spinal procedures. The aim is a comprehensive monitoring not only of afferent and efferent spinal cord pathways but also of sensory and motor nerve roots and cauda equina fibers. Conventional somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) are complemented by motor evoked potentials, dermatomal sensory evoked potentials, spinal cord evoked potentials, evoked electromyography, sensory and motor fib

We developed an attachable magnetic nerve stimulator (AMNS) that connects the metallic instruments to a neurophysiological monitoring unit for monitoring the facial nerve (FN) during ear surgery and present our experiences with intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) of the FN using AMNS. The FN in 20 patients who underwent tympanomastoidectomy for chronic ear disease was examined. The electromyography (EMG) amplitudes of the FN using AMNS were assessed. The EMG amplitudes of the FN at 1.00-mA stimulation during drilling were 265 ± 64 µV in the orbicularis oris and 288 ± 57 µV in the orbicularis…

The diagnosis of acute neuromuscular paralysis includes central nervous system disorders, peripheral neuropathy, neuromuscular conduction block and muscle disease. Identification of the cause is largely a clinical problem but neurophysiological investigations are often essential and a few specific tests are helpful. The commonest cause is Guillain-Barré syndrome. Special precautions, especially monitoring vital capacity, must be taken to detect respiratory failure and avoid atelectasis and chest infection. In acute neuropathy there is an additional danger of cardiac arrhythmias which requires

BACKGROUND: Intracranial pressure (ICP) is a well-established measure in managing not only traumatic brain injury but also nontraumatic intracranial bleeding or edema. When ICP increases despite nursing or medical management, ICP may be reduced via surgical measures. Deciding whether to perform a craniotomy vs. craniectomy (whether the bone flap is replaced or not, respectively) is commonly made intraoperatively following preoperative planning. While ICP monitoring (ICPm) is standard pre- and postoperatively, its intraoperative utility remains understudied.
METHODS: We conducted a study utili

Acute neurologic injury is common in critically ill children. Some conditions - such as traumatic brain injury, meningitis, and hypoxic-ischemic injury following cardiac arrest - require careful consideration of cerebral physiology. Specialized neuromonitoring techniques provide insight regarding patient-specific and disease-specific insight that can improve diagnostic accuracy, aid in targeting therapeutic interventions, and provide prognostic information. In this review, we will discuss recent innovations in invasive (e.g., intracranial pressure monitoring and related computed indices) and n

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic evacuation has become an important minimally invasive strategy for hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage. However, hematomas located in the basal ganglia are frequently adjacent to the corticospinal tract, placing motor pathways at risk during surgical manipulation. Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring, particularly motor evoked potentials (MEPs), may provide real-time functional feedback during surgery.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 45-year-old man presented with acute right hemiplegia. Computed tomography revealed a left basal ganglia hemorrhage (~35 mL). Endoscopic hem…
