BACKGROUND: Malignant blue nevus is a highly aggressive tumor arising from a background of benign blue nevus. Extensive review of the medical literature revealed a few reported cases of this transformation from cutaneous origin. We report the first case of blue nevus of the parotid gland and its malignant transformation within this gland.

The concept of the dysplastic nevus is flawed by inconsistencies regarding the clinical presentation, histological features and biological considerations. With regard to basic mechanisms of malignancy, dysplastic nevi exhibit neither increased proliferation indices nor elevated telomerase activity. These traits denote a benign lesion that is highly prevalent among Caucasians. In rare cases, the distinction from malignant melanoma may pose problems.

We report two cases of nervus mucinosis with papulonodules distributed dermatomally on the right T12 and L1 areas. Case 1 is a 61-year-old man who exhibited nodular lesions on the right abdomen in a zosteriform arrangement. Alcian blue staining showed the presence of mucin in the papillary dermis. Case 2 is a 17-year-old man who had a 10-year history of match-head to bean-sized skin lesions, multiple papules, and nodules distributed dermatomally on the right lower back.

We report a patient who developed malignant transformation of a cellular blue nevus. At the age of 19 years the congenital, pigmented tumor on the left buttock was histopathologically diagnosed as cellular blue nevus. Thirty years later the tumor dramatically increased in size, involving the entire left buttock within several months. One hundred and forty-two (142) halo nevi were reviewed. For 66 cases the diagnosis of halo nevus was made both clinically and pathologically, and for 76 cases the diagnosis was based on histological grounds alone. The nevi were classified by type and by degree of atypia. OBJECTIVE: The efficacy of the Q-switched ruby laser (694 nm, 40 nsec) as a therapy for nevus of Ota was investigated.

A case of blue nevus in the lymph node capsule is described. It's not a common pathology and only few cases have been reported so far. Nevus-cell aggregates in the same location are more frequent and difference between the two entities is described. So for histogenesis of these lesions, a melanocyte migration arrest is favoured rather than the hypothesis of a 'benign metastasis' from a cutaneous primitive site.

Aggregates of nevus cells in the axillary lymph nodes may give rise to a suspicion of metastatic breast cancer. Usually the nevus cells are confined to the capsule or the trabeculae, but in the present case, clusters of nevus cells were also observed in the peripheral sinus. Immunohistochemical analysis for S-100 protein and epithelial membrane antigen established the true nature of the cells.
