Nevus lipomatosus superficialis.

Nevus lipomatosus superficialis is a rare benign skin malformation characterised by ectopic adipocytes in the upper dermis. It is classified into two types: a classical Hoffman-Zurhelle type and the solitary type. A case of the classical type with multiple soft, non-tender, pedunculated, cerebriform, skin-coloured papules and nodules over the right lower back is presented in a 21-year-old Malay woman. She had a rare occurrence of ulceration and necrosis of the lesions.

The nature and significance of macromelanosomes in pigmented skin lesions: their morphological characteristics, specificity for their occurrence, and possible mechanisms for their formation.

The nature and significance of macromelanosomes, or giant melanosomes, in various pigmented skin lesions are characterized in this paper in terms of a) their morphological features, b) the specificity for their occurrence, and c) the possible mechanisms responsible for their formation. These granules occur most frequently in the skin and eyes of persons with x-linked ocular albinism of the Nettleship-Fall type, in the café-au-lait macules of neurofibromatosis, and in the pigmented macules of xeroderma pigmentosa. In these genetic disorders, skin biopsy for detection of the macromelanosomes cou

Hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether-mediated photodynamic therapy for phakomatosis pigmentovascularis type Ⅱ: A case report.

Phakomatosis pigmentovascularis (PPV) is a rare congenital syndrome characterized by capillary malformation (mainly port-wine stains, PWS) and pigmentary nevi with or without extracutaneous signs. Efforts are ongoing to develop laser therapy to treat vascular and pigmentation abnormalities in PPV. The status of pulsed-dye lasers in the treatment of PWS has been challenged by vascular-targeted photodynamic therapy (PDT). Hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether-mediated PDT (HMME-PDT) has become a research hotspot for PWS. The long-term efficiency and safety of HMME-PDT for vascular lesions coexisting

Two cases of subungual melanoma in situ.

Melanonychia, which is characterized by brown or black pigmentation within the nail plate, includes heterogeneous conditions such as pigmented nevus, subungual melanoma and lentigo. We treated two cases of subungual melanoma in situ. One case was a 58-year-old woman who suffered from a malignant melanoma in situ of the left third fingernail, who had also suffered from melanonychia of the fingers for more than 30 years. She had a past history of carcinoma of the uterine cervix. The other patient was a 42-year-old man, who suffered from a malignant melanoma in situ of the right fifth fingernail.

Dermoscopic features of congenital melanocytic nevus and Becker nevus in an adult male population: an analysis with a 10-fold magnification.

BACKGROUND: Dermoscopic features of congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) have been mostly assessed by high-resolution video-dermoscopy. However, optical dermoscopy with the 10-fold magnification is largely available. In some instances, the differential diagnosis between large CMN and Becker nevus (BN) may be difficult. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this work were: (1) to assess by dermoscopy with the 10-fold magnification the morphological features which have been previously suggested as useful for the identification of CMN in high-resolution video-dermoscopy; (2) to search and point out the dermoscopi

Histopathological characteristics of small diameter melanocytic naevi.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The clinical definition of an atypical naevus ("dysplastic naevus" or "naevus with architectural disorder and cytological atypia of melanocytes") stresses size larger than 5 mm in diameter as a major diagnostic criterion. Because malignant melanomas and their precursors may arise in smaller lesions, a histological study of melanocytic lesions smaller than 4 mm in diameter was conducted to evaluate their histological appearance. METHODS: Two hundred and sixty one naevi smaller than 4 mm in diameter were collected and characterised by histological examination into benign naevi

Nevus of Ota and leptomeningeal melanocytic lesions.

Two patients with congenital nevus of Ota developed intracranial malignant melanocytic tumors. One had a localized tumor that resembled a melanocytoma, but the other had a more highly malignant tumor that diffusely seeded the leptomeninges. There are 10 prior cases in the world literature. These cases are contrasted with the other disorders in which melanotic skin lesions are associated with CNS melanocytic tumors, including neurocutaneous melanosis, cellular blue nevus, and metastatic malignant melanoma. Each disorder tends to involve particular sites of the CNS. The nevus of Ota can be consi

[Atrophic zoniform nevus].

The first, in our knowledge, case of naevus atrophicus zoniforme in italian literature is here reported. A 13 year old girl had a thirteen years history of involved numerous depressed areas of skin of the right anterior region of the chest and of the right upper arm. The lesions were round, grey-bluish, smooth, depressed, completely asymptomatic. No inflammatory changes were noticed in affected patches nor in surrounding normal skin. The histologic changes were compatible with dermal atrophy: epidermis was quite normal; dermis war very thin; the thickness of hypodermis was increased. Some larg

Spontaneous Regression of a Congenital Melanocytic Nevus by Sclerosis.

Congenital melanocytic nevi (CMNs) naturally evolve throughout life, growing proportionately with the child, darkening, and exhibiting textural or surface changes (e.g., papillomatous, verrucous, cerebriform), hypertrichosis, and, later in life, lightening of pigmentation. We report the case of a 5-year-old child with complete resolution of a medium-sized CMN involving the distal left leg and foot via sclerosis and in the absence of any halo phenomenon. Spontaneous regression of CMN via sclerosis is rare, and it is thought that an immunologic mechanism different from the mechanism that the hal

Use magnified images to help define the boundaries of melanonychia in surgery.

The diagnoses of longitudinal melanonychia (LM) may be nail matrix nevus, etc. During excision, factors like small/pale lesions make it hard to define the boundary. Head - mounted magnifiers have limited magnification and intraoperative dermatoscopes are often unavailable. We used a DSLR camera to take and magnify pictures. First estimate the incision, then adjust. This method is recommended for doctors without intraoperative dermatoscopes.

Therapeutic Strategies in Neurocutaneous Melanocytosis.

Neurocutaneous melanocytosis (NCM) is a rare, congenital condition primarily affecting children, characterized by large or giant congenital melanocytic nevi (L/GCMN) on the skin and pigmented lesions in the brain. The presence of pigmented lesions in the brain often leads to neurological symptoms like headaches, seizures, and hydrocephalus, typically manifesting before age two. Melanocytic lesions in the brain can range from benign melanocytosis to malignant melanoma. NCM is nearly always fatal if symptomatic, with a high risk of malignant transformation. Patients with larger skin nevi with ne

Pigmented lesions of the conjunctiva: The sheep and the wolf.

BACKGROUND: Pigmented lesions in the conjunctiva can be baffling to both the patients and the treating ophthalmologist because of their varied range of presentation and overlapping clinical features. The lesions range from incidental pigment deposition such as mascara and complexion-associated melanosis to malignant melanoma which poses a risk to life. Similarly, the management ranges from observation at regular intervals to aggressive surgery like exenteration. PURPOSE: We wanted to present a crisp and precise video of the good, bad, and ugly pigmented lesions of the conjunctiva, highlightin
