Changing students' perceptions of the homeless: A community service learning experience.

The homeless are an underserved, local vulnerable population that can benefit from a service learning clinical practicum experience for baccalaureate prepared nursing students. Negative attitudes and disrespect among healthcare workers has been identified by the homeless as a barrier to healthcare. A service learning experience with a vulnerable population has been shown to change nursing students' attitudes and beliefs. A large university in a southern city partnered with a community based organization that provided services to the homeless to educate senior nursing students in a service lear

Developing Community-Based Palliative Care for Children: A Community Case Study from an Urban Informal Settlement in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Globally, more than 97% of children needing palliative care reside in low- and middle-income countries, where there is very limited access to palliative care. Several community-based palliative care programs focused on adults, have been described in resource limited settings, suggesting a simple and low-cost approach to providing palliative care. The implementation of community-based palliative care for children has not previously been described. CONTEXT: This community case study describes the implementation of an innovative model of community-based palliative care program in and

Hospital Nursing Staff Perceptions of Resources Provided by Their Organizations During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has profoundly impacted the health and psychological well-being of hospital nursing staff. While additional support is needed to better cope with increased job stressors, little is known about what types of hospital resources have been provided and how nursing staff perceive them. This study addressed this gap by describing nursing staff perceptions of resources provided by hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. METHODS: Registered nurses and nursing assistants who were working in hospitals during the pandemic

The chain mediating role of rumination and social withdrawal in the relationship between smartphone distraction and depression among Chinese nursing students.

Smartphone distraction (SD) is closely related to depression, and the prevalence of SD among nursing students is gradually increasing. However, the potential mechanism of the effect of SD on nursing students' depression is unclear. A total of 574 nursing students were assessed using Smartphone Distraction Scale, Ruminative Response Scale, Hikikomori Questionnaire, and Patient Health Questionnaire-9. The results indicated that SD among nursing students had an impact on depression through four pathways: (1) SD was positively associated with depression (β = 0.353, P < 0.001); (2) Rumination (β =

Developing an information systems strategy for nursing.

With the rapidly changing health care environment and information technology advances, organizations need to engage in strategic, planned change in order to allocate limited resources, achieve the organization's goals, and fulfill its mission [1]. One of the most important aspects of the organization's planned strategies for change concerns the information systems. The involvement of the nursing department in this process is critical. This poster presentation will communicate how nurses can develop an information systems strategic plan that will enable them to play an active role as contributo

Obesity in Hong Kong Chinese preschool children: where are all the nurses?

We report an ethnographic study of 10 preschool children aged 2-6 years recruited from kindergartens in Hong Kong, 6 of whom were overweight or obese. Each was followed for 12-18 months. We confirmed previously described risk factors and showed how these interacted to produce obesity in some but not all at-risk children. Despite much rhetoric in the literature about holistic care of the preschool child, we were struck by the lack of coordinated professional input to the needs of children at risk of obesity and by the absence of nursing input in particular. We argue that a "whole-systems" nursi

The value of community participation in disease surveillance: a case study from Niger.

A team of researchers, including one behavioral scientist (S.M.N.) and three epidemiologists (L.Q., O.S. and S.N.) conducted community analyses to assess the social and cultural factors that affect the detection and reporting of disease cases in a surveillance system, using acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance in Niger as a case study. Over a 60-day period in the country, the research team reviewed written field reports and interviewed epidemiologists, nurses, community members and persons in governmental and non-governmental organizations. Overall, we found that the logistical difficult

A European Blueprint for Community Nursing: Building Care Protocols on International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 7101:2023.

Care across Europe is moving out of the hospital and into homes and communities. The family and community nurse now stands at the center of this shift, holding continuous responsibility for people where they live. Yet the procedures that guide this work are often written locally and vary widely, with no shared quality architecture behind them. This editorial proposes International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 7101:2023 as a possible common European reference model for designing community nursing care protocols, anchoring each procedure to quality principles such as people-centered ca

Health equity and e-cigarette use among young adults in rural areas: A social determinants of health framework.

Young adults (YAs) aged 18 to 24 in rural areas are increasingly using Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS), commonly known as e-cigarettes, in the United States. Rural communities already face significant health disparities due to higher tobacco use, contributing to worse health outcomes, including increased mortality from heart disease, cancer, and respiratory diseases. Using the adapted World Health Organization's Social Determinants of Health framework, this paper examines how structural and intermediary determinants shape ENDS use among rural YAs. Special attention is given to how

An equivalence evaluation of a nurse-moderated group-based internet support program for new mothers versus standard care: a pragmatic preference randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: All mothers in South Australia are offered a clinic or home-visit by a Child and Family Health community nurse in the initial postnatal weeks. Subsequent support is available on request from staff in community clinics and from a telephone helpline. The aim of the present study is to compare equivalence of a single clinic-based appointment plus a nurse-moderated group-based internet intervention when infants were aged 0-6 months versus a single home-visit together with subsequent standard services (the latter support was available to mothers in both study groups). METHODS/DESIGN: T
