Background: Pulmonary artery (PA) pressure can be monitored remotely by a microelectromechanical sensor permanently implanted in the PA. This allows fluid overload in heart failure to be managed in a more timely manner. Objective: This study aimed to explore patient and provider perceptions of shared decision-making (SDM) for the cardio-microelectromechanical system PA pressure monitoring device. Methods: A convenience sample of eight patient-provider dyads at an academic cardiology clinic completed the SDM questionnaire in the clinic before the procedure. Results: The majority of providers re

The military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan have resulted in patterns of injury not commonly seen in previous conflicts. Improvised explosive devices are the primary weapon, and exposure to blast is the most common mechanism of injury. Blasts can result in polytrauma injury, in which multiple body systems, including the head and brain, are injured. Nursing and rehabilitation care can be further challenged by other blast sequelae such as pain, amputation, blindness or low vision, hearing impairment, and aphasia. This article describes the process by which one Veterans Affairs Medical Center

The use of the Sengstaken-Blakemore tube as a life-saving treatment for bleeding oesophageal varices is slowly becoming the least preferred method possibly due to the potential complications associated with its placement. Nursing practice pertaining to the care of this patient group appears ad hoc and reliant on local knowledge and experience as opposed to recognised evidence of best practice. Therefore, this paper focuses on the application of Lewin's transitional change theory used to introduce a change in nursing practice with the application of a guideline to enhance the care of patients w

Alcoholic Anonymous (AA) is a worldwide, million-member organization that has assisted countless alcoholics to achieve sobriety through a spiritual program of recovery from alcoholism. Based on spiritual principles known as the "Twelve Steps" and "Twelve Traditions," AA has provided a model for other recovery programs such as Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Gamblers Anonymous (GA), and Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA). Recovery in AA appears to involve a process of self-transcendence. In recent years, nursing scholars have increasingly explored the concepts of self-transcendence and spiritualit

Since the Patient Self-Determination Act was enacted in 1991, asking patients whether they have advance directives (eg, a Living Will and a Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care Decisions) has become part of the admission procedures at health care facilities. However, questions may still remain about what exactly is the role of the health care provider in this part of the admission process. In many health care settings, the nurse has the responsibility to ask the patient about advance directives. If this occurs during preparation for surgery or other medical procedures, it adds responsibil

BACKGROUND: Cervical examination is a crucial procedure for assessing labor progress in nursing and midwifery education; however, it may cause discomfort for parturients and provide limited opportunities for repeated practice among nursing and midwifery students. Simulation-based learning offers a safe environment to enhance learners' competence and confidence before clinical practice.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the Technology Innovation for Cervical Examination-Labor Progress Assessment Model Set (TICE-LpAms) through expert assessment.
METHODS: This study reports the expert evalu

BackgroundHistorically love in nursing has been expressed as tender loving care but a move to technological thinking in nursing and the integration of healthcare systems may have changed this to one where love may be distant or avoided from the arena of care. It may now uncertain if love in nursing is an essential part of care, or supererogatory and additional to a paid duty of care.Research aimA study was conducted to investigate hospital nurses' experiences of providing end-of-life care. A core theme from the study was the nurse's expression of love. This article reports on this outcome and

Central nervous system (CNS) infections and clinically overlapping neuroinflammatory conditions in the neurocritical care unit (neuro-ICU) are associated with profound mortality and prolonged clinical burdens. Invasive neuromonitoring devices, particularly external ventricular drains (EVDs), significantly increase the risk of infection, while delayed clinical manifestations often hinder early recognition and intervention. This scoping review aimed to systematically map the current landscape of precision nursing device management and artificial intelligence (AI)-integrated early warning systems

AIM: To explore paediatric nurses' experiences and perceptions of personal and professional development (PPD).
BACKGROUND: PPD is a crucial factor in enhancing nurses' job satisfaction and retention. Whilst this topic has been widely explored in general nursing, limited research exists on how paediatric nurses perceive and experience PPD. Registered nurses at the standard clinical grade (Band 5) comprise the majority of the children's nursing workforce, but are rarely the focus of PPD.
DESIGN: This UK-based qualitative study used interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) following COREQ

In the previous issue of the Journal of Pediatric Nursing, one type of evidence-based practice (EBP) format was provided for potential nurse scholars who utilize the EBP process [MacPhee, M. (2002). Journal of Pediatric Nursing, 17(4);313-20]. There are, however, many potential formats to present evidence-based clinical practice innovations. I am eager to work with nurses who have been involved in promoting evidence-based nursing practice. The Journal of Pediatric Nursing will use this column as a forum for sharing evidence-based clinical practice innovations, such as case studies, clinical te

Nurse-patient relationships are a substantially neglected area of empirical research, the more so in developing than developed countries. Although nursing discourse usually emphasises "caring", nursing practice is often quite different and may be more strongly characterised by humiliation of patients and physical abuse. This paper explores the question: why do nurses abuse patients, through presentation and discussion of findings of research on health seeking practices in one part of the South African maternity services. The research was qualitative and based on 103 minimally structured in-dep

AIM: To explore nurses' perspectives on decision-making processes and influencing factors when caring for unresponsive dying patients in the last days of life.
DESIGN: A qualitative interpretive study.
METHODS: Using purposive recruitment and informal peer referral, twenty-one nurses from a specialist palliative care service in a metropolitan city in Australia were interviewed between July 2024 and January 2025. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Decision-making theory was used as an interpretive lens.
FINDINGS: Two themes were generated: 'The patient as an absent presenc

BACKGROUND: Robotic technology has the potential to assist nurses, but the complexity and unpredictability of health care environments cannot be replicated in a laboratory setting. Furthermore, there is a lack of experiential evidence that robotic technology will meaningfully impact nursing. Collaborative development of technology and real-world usability studies offers the ability to address problems early in the design process when functional changes can be implemented.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to use an observational study and systematically evaluate the work system of inpa

BACKGROUND: Clinical decision-making often occurs under conditions of high cognitive load, emotional stress, and time pressure. Psychological distancing, an emotion-focused coping strategy involving the mental separation of oneself from emotionally stressful situations to reduce affective impact, supports affect regulation in such contexts; however, its neural implementation during realistic multitasking and the extent to which it is shaped by clinical expertise remain poorly understood.
METHODS: We investigated the neural correlates of psychological distancing during high-risk multitasking c

BACKGROUND: Since 2018, German nursing homes have been able to reimburse advance care planning (ACP) at the expense of statutory health insurance. ACP is a consultation for end-of-life care in which care preferences can be documented. The consultation is conducted by facilitators, who have completed the required training. However, limited research exists on how the ACP consultation processes are realized. Hence, this focus group study, as a part of the "Gut-Leben" research project, investigated its implementation.
METHODS: Twenty-four ACP facilitators participated in four semi-structured focu
