This article focuses on three nutritional problems that are associated with developmental problems in infancy and childhood. Major points are that (a) nutritional problems are often linked to environmental disadvantage, (b) the possibility exists for long-term developmental effects, (c) treatment for undernutrition does not appear to reverse all negative effects, and (d) prevention of nutritional disorders rather than treatment holds the greatest promise for eradicating behavioral and developmental problems.

Tobacco-alcohol or nutritional amblyopia is a rare disorder of decreased central vision associated with nutritional deficiencies and tobacco smoking. although folate deficiency is common in patients with tobacco-alcohol amblyopia, the role of folic acid in this disorder has been underplayed. The role of cyanide from tobacco smoke, folate and other dietary deficiencies will be reviewed. A new model of the pathogenesis of tobacco-alcohol amblyopia is proposed based on the presumptive alteration of methionine and S-adenosyl-L-methionine metabolism.

Malnutrition is the most frequent nutritional disorder in patients with gastrointestinal cancer and is associated with cachexia syndrome, worsening of prognosis, and shortened survival rate. Early nutrition screening, assessment, and intervention are able to favorably modify the clinical evolution of affected patients. The adequate provision of nutritional requirements has been associated with improvement of immunologic status, and avoidance of further complications related to poor nutritional status, surgical treatment, and anticancer therapy. In malnourished patients, the supplementation of

OBJECTIVES:: To evaluate the association between self-reported maternal near miss and adverse nutritional status in children under one year of age.
METHODS:: This study is a secondary analysis of a study in which women who took their children under one year of age to the national vaccine campaign were interviewed. The self-reported condition of maternal near miss used the criteria of Intensive Care Unit admission; eclampsia; blood transfusion and hysterectomy; and their potential associations with any type of nutritional disorder in children, including deficits in weight-for-age, deficits in

Children with malnutrition compared with those without are at higher risk of infection, with more severe outcomes. How clinicians assess nutritional risk factors in febrile children in primary care varies. We conducted a post hoc subgroup analysis of febrile children with severe malnutrition enrolled in a randomized, controlled trial in primary care centers in Tanzania. The clinical outcome of children with severe malnutrition defined by anthropometric measures and clinical signs was compared between two electronic clinical diagnostic algorithms: ePOCT, which uses weight-for-age and mid-upper

Children with neurological impairment frequently have difficulties in consuming sufficient energy and other nutrients to maintain adequate nutritional status. Under-nutrition is a significant contributory factor to growth failure. Eating may be distressing and time-consuming for the child and carer. Aspiration of feeds is common and may predispose to chronic chest infections. Gastro-oesophageal reflux is also common and may contribute to significant morbidity. This paper discusses some of the issues involved in the nutritional management of neurologically impaired children.

People with eating disorders suffer from a mental disorder that negatively affects their physical and/or mental health. The three most frequent eating disorders are binge eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, and anorexia nervosa. Environmental and genetic factors are involved in the pathogenesis of eating disorders in vulnerable persons. Although treatment varies among different types of eating disorders, nutrition, medical care combined with psychotherapy and medications are standard of care. The aim of this review is to give an overview of the oral health impact of eating disorders with a speci

Early-life malnutrition plays a critical role in foetal development and predisposes to metabolic diseases later in life, according to the concept of 'developmental programming'. Different types of early nutritional imbalance, including undernutrition, overnutrition and micronutrient deficiency, have been related to long-term metabolic disorders. Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that disturbances in nutrition during the period of preconception, pregnancy and primary infancy can affect mitochondrial function and epigenetic mechanisms. Moreover, even though multiple mechanisms underlying no

Weaning (or introduction of complementary feeding) is a special and important moment in the growth of a child, both for the family and the infant itself, and it can play a major role in the child's future health. Throughout the years, various weaning modes have come in succession, the latest being baby-led weaning; the timing for introducing foods and the requirements of which sort of nutrient for weaning have also changed over time. Furthermore, the role played by nutrition, especially in the early stages of life, for the onset of later non-communicable disorders, such as diabetes, obesity or

Unlike other pathologies, not much attention has been paid to the relationship between nutrition and respiratory disease. This is probably because some of these diseases, such as cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, are closely associated with smoking while others that could be more directly linked with nutrition such as cystic fibrosis and emphysema are not directly caused by nutrition disorders. Not all patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are undernourished. When malnutrition is present in these patients it is because of multiple reasons and is associated with an…

Background: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with alterations in eating behavior, dietary patterns, and body weight regulation. Although pharmacological treatment is known to suppress appetite, its broader effects on nutrition-related outcomes remain unclear. This scoping review aimed to map the available evidence on dietary intake, eating behavior, nutritional status, growth, and bone health in individuals with ADHD receiving pharmacotherapy. Methods: A scoping review was conducted in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and PRISMA-ScR guideline

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical global health challenge, as it reduces the effectiveness of current therapies and demands novel integrative approaches. This narrative, integrative review analyzes how physical activity and nutrition interact with the pharmacological design of antimicrobial agents, influencing their absorption, metabolism, distribution, efficacy, and resistance development, drawing on studies published between 2015 and 2025 across microbiology, pharmacology, nutrition, and exercise physiology. Available evidence indicates that physical activity enhances immune compe

Long-term intravenous catheterization is vital for delivering chemotherapy to cancer patients and parenteral nutrition to those with intestinal failure, but it inevitably leads to complications, including metabolic disorders, bloodstream infection, liver injury, and kidney injury. Clinical monitoring methods show notable delays, while real-time blood monitoring devices fail to ensure long-term stability in vivo. Here, we present a chemical-sensing catheter that integrates multiple analyte sensors, including creatinine, taurocholic acid, bilirubin, and taurine, for real-time monitoring of compl

This study was conducted to explore the experiences of educators with mealtime behaviours of children with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in schools, and to explore the strategies undertaken in schools to improve nutrition among these children. In-depth interviews were conducted with 13 educators of various special schools across Mumbai. They described their experiences with 3-11 year-old children with a diagnosis of ASD. Four themes emerged from this study: reasons for disruptive mealtime behaviours, using mealtimes as opportunities for indirect learning, strategies used to av

BACKGROUND: Early childhood malnutrition affects 113 million children worldwide, impacting health and increasing vulnerability for cognitive and behavioral disorders later in life. Molecular signatures after childhood malnutrition, including the potential for intergenerational transmission, remain unexplored.
METHODS: We surveyed blood DNA methylomes (~483,000 individual CpG sites) in 168 subjects across two generations, including 50 generation 1 individuals hospitalized during the first year of life for moderate to severe protein-energy malnutrition, then followed up to 48 years in the Barba

Published epidemiologic data on the administration rates of enteral/parenteral home nutrition is very limited. The aim of this first nationwide study was to assess the availability of pediatric home enteral nutrition (HEN) services in Poland. The questionnaire was sent to all regional centers providing pediatric HEN services in Poland (n = 14). The analysis included the number of pediatric patients who received HEN in 2010, their demographic characteristics and geographical distribution. Furthermore, the distributions of indications and methods of enteral nutrition administration were analyzed

Foetal growth from conception to birth is a complex process predetermined by the genetic configuration of the foetus, the availability of nutrients and oxygen to the foetus, maternal nutrition and various growth factors and hormones of maternal, foetal and placental origin. Maintenance of the optimal foetal environment is the key factor of the future quality of life. Such conditions like inadequate nutrition and oxygen supply, infection, hypertension, gestational diabetes or drug abuse by the mother, expose the foetus to nonphysiological environment. In conditions of severe intrauterine depriv

Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the development of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) have had a significant impact on domestic and global health, social, political, and economic outcomes. Prevention and treatment efforts to control HIV infection are more demanding than in previous decades. Achieving food and nutrition security, and managing nutrition-related complications of HIV infection and the multiple aspects of disease initiated by or surrounding HIV infection, referred to as HIV disease, remain challenges for patients and for those involved with HIV/AIDS
