Possible therapeutic effects of essential oils on voltage dependent Na+ channels in experimental diabetic neuropathy.

Diabetic neuropathy (DN) is the most frequent complication of diabetes mellitus (DM), characterized by derangements of somatic and autonomic nerves, predominantly the longest nerves. DN is clinically relevant because it may seriously damage the quality of life of the patient, may be life-threatening, and is of great epidemiological incidence. It causes severe pain, dysesthesia, and allodynia initially; with disease progression, it kills the nerve, leading to full anaesthesia, accidental feet, leg ulceration, diabetic foot, and amputation. Underlying these dysfunctional alterations, there are n

Chromatographic Conditions as a Source of Analytical Variability in GC-MS Profiling of Essential Oils.

The analytical characterization of essential oils (EOs) is often interpreted primarily in terms of biological variability, although analytical conditions may also affect compositional profiling and data comparability. In this study, the influence of chromatographic conditions on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) profiling was investigated. Five EOs representing chemically diverse plant matrices, including Pistacia lentiscus (resin and stem) and leaf oils from Salvia rosmarinus, Laurus nobilis, and Thymus vulgaris, were analyzed using two capillary columns with different stationary p…

Selection Criteria for Oils, Surfactants, and Co-Surfactants in Ocular Nanoemulsion Formulation: A Mini Review.

The ocular nanoemulsions (NE) are biphasic systems mainly composed of oil and water emulsified by surfactants/cosurfactants. The extensive surface area of ocular NE enhances corneal contact, leading to improved drug penetration and making it a preferable delivery system. They can also increase the solubility of drugs across the ocular barrier with improved residence time. Oils, surfactants, and co-surfactants used in formulating ocular NEs present a significant challenge in developing safe, stable, less irritant, more permeable, improved residence time, and highly bioavailable products. The ch…

In Vitro Evaluation of Synergistic Essential Oils Combination for Enhanced Antifungal Activity against Candida spp.

In recent years, a significant number of infections have been attributed to non-albicidal Candida species (NAC), mainly due to the increasing resistance of NAC to antifungal agents. As only a few antifungal agents are available (azoles, echinocandins, polyenes, allylamines and nucleoside analogues), it is very important to look for possible alternatives to inhibit resistant fungi. One possibility could be essential oils (EOs), which have been shown to have significant antifungal and antibacterial activity. Therefore, in this study, the efficacy of 12 EOs and their combinations was evaluated ag…

Removal of PAHs, TSS, oils and fats from ammonium-rich coke wastewater by granular filtration.

Coke wastewater is a complex industrial wastewater due to its high content of toxic compounds such as cyanides, thiocyanates, phenols, tar, oils, and fats. After a series of treatments, wastewater with a high ammonium content is obtained (around 4,150 mg·L-1). A stripping process is used to reduce it. Certain pollutants in the influent, such as tar, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), oils, fats and total suspended solids (TSS), interfere with stripping and therefore must be previously removed. In this study, the performance of a pilot-scale airlift sand filter was evaluated under real co…
