In a retrospective study we looked at the incidence of carotid artery stenosis in 191 ophthalmological patients, which underwent duplex sonography. In all these patients the oculist had considered carotid artery stenosis to be a possible reason for the present eye disease or visual disturbance. Patients with spina bifida have multiple ophthalmologic problems, many of which are preventable. Most of the problems are related to the hydrocephalus, which is caused by the coexisting Arnold-Chiari malformation. When patients are treated for hydrocephalus, and comprehensive eye care is available, 94% of the patients will have 6/12 visual acuity or better. Six patients with complete type Behçet's disease were studied electro-retinographically and electro-oculographically. The electrical responses tested include the hyperosmolarity response in the EOG, the oscillatory potentials and the rapid off-response in the ERG. 43 patients with suspected adverse reactions to ophthalmic medicaments were tested using three different methods: normal patch test on back skin (ENH), patch test on stripped back skin (HSA) and on scarified skin of the forearm (SKT). The ENH was positive in only 9 patients (20.0%) with one of the used preparations whereas on stripped skin positive reactions were observed in another 14 patients (32.6%). Alström's syndrome consists of pigmentary retinopathy, diabetes, obesity, normal mental capacity, and sensorineural deafness. The early retinal findings are optic atrophy, salt-and-pepper pigment epithelial abnormalities, and marked vascular attenuation. Later in the disease process, diffuse areas of chorioretinal atrophy and large clumps of pigment develop. Severe visual loss in the first decade is characteristic and is an important point in the differential diagnosis. Clinically evident renal disease is a variable age-related phenomenon, and is probably the most frequent cause of death.

The authors describe two cases of sphenoïd sinus mucoceles, the first with a chiasmatic syndrome and the second with an oculomotor paralysis, and compare these cases with those described in the litterature. Sebaceous carcinomas are rare, and deadly, adnexal tumors with a distinct predilection for eyelid skin. A chronic blepharoconjunctivitis and/or a recurrent chalazion are the most common clinical presentations that should alert the clinician to the diagnosis. Great care and skill are needed in interpreting these lesions histopathologically as they can be easily confused with basal- and squamous-cell carcinomas.

Fifty-six patients with cysticercosis and neuro-ophthalmic signs were examined by me during an 11-year period. Their symptoms generally reflected increased intracranial pressure caused by hydrocephalus, subacute meningitis, cerebral masses or a combination of these effects. Papilledema (37 patients) was the commonest sign, with pupillary abnormalities (16 patients) and nystagmus (12 patients) frequently encountered. Cysticercosis is a relatively benign, although episodic, disease, as long as secondary obstructive hydrocephalus is promptly diagnosed and treated by CSF shunting procedures.

On the basis of a screening of 6226 patients in western Nepal the most common causes of disease were established. Refraction anomalies and cataract were both found in over 20 percent of the patients, conjunctivitis/dacryocystitis and corneal opacities each in more than 10 percent. Lid conditions, trachoma, pterygium, vitamin A deficiency, glaucoma, iritis, diseases of the fundus and phtisis bulbi were each seen in more than 1 percent of the patients. Problems of treatment are described.

As a pilot study preliminary to a large scale survey on chronic CS2 toxicity 30 workers of a viscose rayon industry in Belgium have been examined.
