Continuity and change: assortative marriage and the consistency of personality in adulthood.

How is personality stability possible amid the myriad of social changes and transformations that characterize a human life? We argue that by choosing situations that are compatible with their dispositions and by affiliating with similar others, individuals may set in motion processes of social interchange that sustain their dispositions across time and circumstance. To test this proposition we examined mate selection, using data on married couples from two ongoing longitudinal studies at the Institute of Human Development, University of California, Berkeley. Consistent with other research, the

Atypical posterior leaflet motion in echocardiogram in mitral stenosis.

The echocardiographic diagnosis of mitral stenosis is based on the finding of a decreased early diastolic slope of the anterior mitral leaflet. This finding is also seen in other conditions in which the rate of left ventricular filling is reduced by decreased compliance of the ventricular myocardium rather than by mitral valve obstruction. Patients with "true" mitral stenosis have been differentiated from those with decreased ventricular compliance resulting in "false" mitral stenosis by the direction of movement of the posterior mitral valve leaflet. This report describes a patient with mitra

The role of vestibular cues in postural sway.

Controlling posture requires continuous sensory feedback about body motion and orientation, including from the vestibular organs. Little is known about the role of tilt vs. translation vs. rotation vestibular cues. We examined whether intersubject differences in vestibular function were correlated with intersubject differences in postural control. Vestibular function was assayed using vestibular direction-recognition perceptual thresholds, which determine the smallest motion that can be reliably perceived by a subject seated on a motorized platform in the dark. In study A, we measured threshol

Considerations for Temporomandibular Joint Procurement in Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation.

Methods for harvest of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) for transplantation may involve several anatomic levels. The authors aim to assess the feasibility and identify challenges with 2 such methods, resuspending the donor condyles from the recipient glenoid fossae and en bloc harvest of the joint and surrounding temporal bone with plate-fixation to the recipient skull base. Two mock face transplantations were carried out using 4 fresh cadavers. Computed tomography imaging was obtained before and after the procedures to assess the technical success of each method. Both techniques were technic

Auto-segmentation of thoraco-abdominal organs in pediatric dynamic MRI.

PURPOSE: Analysis of the abnormal motion of thoraco-abdominal organs in respiratory disorders such as the Thoracic Insufficiency Syndrome (TIS) and scoliosis such as adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) or early onset scoliosis (EOS) can lead to better surgical plans. We can use healthy subjects to find out the normal architecture and motion of a rib cage and associated organs and attempt to modify the patient's deformed anatomy to match to it. Dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) is a practical and preferred imaging modality for capturing dynamic images of healthy pediatric subjects. In

Deep learning-based CNN method for fiducial marker detection in kilovoltage X-ray images for liver tumor motion monitoring.

BACKGROUND: During radiation therapy, liver tumor motion can reduce dose delivery accuracy and increase irradiation of adjacent healthy tissues. Because liver tumors are difficult to visualize directly on kilovoltage (kV) X-ray images, fiducial markers are commonly implanted as surrogates for tumor position during treatment. Conventional marker-segmentation approaches such as template matching can lose accuracy when markers are obscured by bone, surgical clips, or stents. Although Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based approaches have shown strong performance for image analysis, their applic

Combining pelvic floor ultrasonography with deep learning to diagnose anterior compartment organ prolapse.

BACKGROUND: Anterior compartment prolapse is a common pelvic organ prolapse (POP), which occurs frequently among middle-aged and elderly women and can cause urinary incontinence, perineal pain and swelling, and seriously affect their physical and mental health. At present, pelvic floor ultrasound is the primary examination method, but it is not carried out by many primary medical institutions due to the significant shortcomings of training in the early stage and the variable image quality. There has been great progress in the application of deep learning (DL) in image-based diagnosis in variou

Recent advances in piezoelectric hydrogels for osteoarthritis therapy: material design, signal transduction, and clinical translation.

With no disease-modifying therapy available, osteoarthritis (OA) remains a primary cause of disability worldwide. However, between 2023 and 2026, rapid advances have been made in the development of piezoelectric hydrogels, a technology that transduces joint motion into endogenous electrical signals, thereby restoring the electromechanical microenvironment of degenerated cartilage. This short review provides a critical synthesis of these developments through a four-dimensional framework encompassing material design, signal transduction, therapeutic efficacy, and translational validation. Covalent Organic Framework Electrolytes for Solid-State Lithium Batteries: Designing Ion Highways for Next-Generation Energy Storage.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are emerging as a programmable platform for solid electrolytes in solid-state lithium batteries, since their crystalline, periodically ordered nanochannels can be engineered to enable directional ion transport. These low-resistance pathways promote directional lithium-ion (Li+) migration through a narrower, more spatially ordered distribution of coordination environments, achieved via site-to-site hopping and/or guest-assisted vehicular motion within the channels. This review presents a design-oriented framework linking COF structural descriptors to ion-trans

Strain-Insensitive Conductive Hydrogel Materials for Motion-Artifact-Free Flexible Bioelectronics.

Flexible and stretchable electronics inevitably undergo stretching, compression, bending and torsion when conformally attached to skin, soft tissues and dynamic organs. While deformation-induced electrical variations act as target signals for motion sensors, they cause resistance/impedance drift, baseline shift and sensitivity degradation in physiological electrodes, temperature/chemical sensors, interconnects and stimulation devices, leading to motion artifacts and reduced long-term reliability. Hydrogels are pivotal materials for soft bioelectronic interfaces owing to their high water conten

Speckle-Tracking Strain Echocardiography for the Assessment of Left Ventricular Structure and Function: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

Assessment of left ventricular systolic function is essential for diagnosing and managing cardiac diseases and provides important prognostic information to the treating clinician. However, traditional methods for assessing left ventricular systolic function such as ejection fraction are limited by their reliance on geometric assumptions, subjective reader interpretation, sensitivity to loading conditions and volume, and reflection of a single plane of motion. In addition to interobserver and intraobserver variability and technical confounders, this evaluation is complicated by the complex 3-di

Assessing UFF and DFT-Tuned Force Fields for Predicting Experimental Isotherms of MOFs.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials for gas storage and separation applications due to their high tunability and porosity. The rational design of MOFs relies on accurate computational modeling, with grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations frequently employed to model gas uptake. However, GCMC predictions often deviate from experimental observations, limiting their utility in MOF screening. These discrepancies primarily arise from three factors: inaccuracies in the force field, neglect of atomic motions, and neglect of structural imperfections in MOFs. In this study,

Myocardial Wringing and Rigid Rotation in Cardiac Amyloidosis.

BACKGROUND: The motion of the heart is a result of the helicoidal arrangement of the myofibers in the organ's wall. We aimed to study the relationship between the wringing motion state and the degree of ventricular function in patients with cardiac amyloidosis (CA). METHODS: Fifty patients with CA and decreased global longitudinal strain (LS) were evaluated using 2-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography. We have expressed LS as positive values to facilitate understanding. Normal twist, which occurs when basal and apical rotations occur in opposite directions, was coded as positive. Whe

Use of the head shake-sensory organization test as an outcome measure in the rehabilitation of an individual with head movement provoked symptoms of imbalance.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The purpose of this case report is to highlight the Head Shake (HS) Sensory Organization Test (SOT) (HS-SOT) as an outcome measure in the rehabilitation of a patient with head movement provoked symptoms of dysequilibrium. Despite complaints of imbalance and head movement provoked symptoms, there are individuals who are able to score within normal limits on measures such as the SOT and Berg Functional Balance Test. The HS modification to the SOT can objectively identify abnormal vestibular inputs associated with head motion and maintaining balance. METHODS: This case re

Foot force direction control during leg pushes against fixed and moving pedals in persons post-stroke.

The component of foot force generated by muscle action (F(m)) during pedaling in healthy humans has a nearly constant direction with increasing force magnitude. The present study investigated the effect of stroke on the control of foot force. Ten individuals with hemiparesis secondary to a cerebral vascular accident performed pushing efforts against translationally fixed and moving pedals on a custom stationary cycle ergometer. We found that while F(m) direction remained constant with increasing effort in both the fixed- and moving-crank conditions for both limbs, the orientation of that force

Instability of ocular torsion in zero gravity: possible implications for space motion sickness.

Inherent asymmetries of the gravity-sensitive otolith organs of the inner ear may be well-compensated in ordinary 1 G, but rendered unstable in novel gravitational states. Several aspects of ocular counterrolling and spontaneous eye torsion, reflexes governed by the otoliths, were examined during the hypo- and hypergravity in parabolic flight on the NASA KC-135 aircraft. Among the subjects were two astronauts, one who had suffered space motion sickness during his mission and one who had not. Using an observed separation of scores of torsional instability at 0 G as the criterion, we divided our
