Early orthodontic treatment for Class II malocclusion reduces the chance of incisal trauma: Results of a Cochrane systematic review.

UNLABELLED: In this article, we summarize the most clinically relevant findings of our recently updated Cochrane systematic review into the treatment of Class II Division 1 malocclusion. METHODS: A systematic review of the databases was performed to identify all randomized controlled trials evaluating early treatment with functional appliances to correct Class II Division 1 malocclusion. RESULTS: Three early treatment studies with data from 353 participants were included in this review. The results showed no significant difference for any outcomes, except new incidence of incisor trauma, whi

Mucogingival repairs in periodontal surgery.

The utilization of partial thickness apically repositioned flaps, laterally repositioned flaps, and free mucosal autografts enable the clinician to repair most mucogingival problems. These techniques may be used separately or in combination to increase the zone of attached gingiva, deepen the vestibular fold, and eliminate muscle and frenum pulls. If basic surgical principles are adhered to, the possibilities of repair of mucogingival problems utilizing these procedures are unlimited. The most important step in mucogingival surgery is planning the surgical procedure prior to beginning surgery.

Physical properties of root cementum: part 8. Volumetric analysis of root resorption craters after application of controlled intrusive light and heavy orthodontic forces: a microcomputed tomography scan study.

INTRODUCTION: Intrusion is a critical type of orthodontic tooth movement in relation to external root resorption. Our aims in this prospective randomized clinical trial were to quantify, 3 dimensionally, the amount of root resorption when controlled light and heavy intrusive forces were applied to human premolars and to establish the sites where root resorption is more prevalent. METHODS: Fifty-four maxillary first premolars, orthodontically indicated for extraction from 27 patients (left and right maxillary first premolars from each), were intruded for 28 days with buccal and palatal beta-ti

Prevalence of Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome in Children with Orofacial Malocclusion in Bengaluru Urban District: An Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: The hallmark signs of upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) include increased breathing effort, frequent arousals during sleep, and daytime drowsiness without noticeable problems with oxygenation or airflow. It may involve craniofacial traits such as a long face, small mouth, retrognathia, nasal obstruction, narrow throat, and high palate and primarily affects young, thin people who suffer from insomnia. UARS causes fatigue by interfering with sleep. Due to airway obstruction, mouth breathing in children can cause Class II Division 1 malocclusion and a V-shaped maxillary arch. A

Accidental ingestion of a dental object during a periodontal surgical procedure on an IV sedated patient: Case management.

INTRODUCTION: Foreign-body aspiration (FBA) and ingestion (FBI) are rare but serious events that occur in dental offices throughout the world every year. Such events can have significant medical, legal, and financial consequences for both the dental clinician and the patient. By presenting this case study, we aim to highlight the proper management and possible sequelae of such an event. METHODS AND RESULTS: A 72-year-old woman underwent a dental procedure with intravenous sedation. In the process of dental treatment, a dental bur was accidentally ingested. The patient was promptly referred to

Adolescent receptiveness to dentist involvement in COVID-19 and HPV vaccination.

OBJECTIVES: Human papillomavirus (HPV) and COVID-19 can be prevented and mitigated by vaccines. Few studies have focused on dentists' role in vaccine decision making, and even fewer have explored adolescent perspectives; a target population for both vaccinations. This study aimed to address this gap with a focus on whether opinions vary between diseases. METHODS: We administered a validated cross-sectional survey to adolescent patients (11-19 years) in an orthodontic clinic in Vancouver, British Columbia from July-August 2023. The survey included questions pertaining to patient background, va

Periodontal profile and radiographic characterization of the jaws in a patient with autosomal dominant osteopetrosis.

UNLABELLED: Osteopetrosis (OP) comprehends a rare group of conditions, presenting on radiographs increased bone density, deriving from irregularities in osteoclast differentiation or function. In the autosomal dominant osteopetrosis (ADO), some patients stay asymptomatic for some time, or only develop mild symptoms. The dental surgeon is often the first to presuppose the disease during routine imaging examinations, referring the patient to a specialized medical group. Furthermore, osteomyelitis is one of the major OP complications, and should be refrained through frequent dental monitoring. Si

[A Review of Archaeological Studies on Dento-maxillofacial Deformities].

Dentomaxillofacial deformities are highly prevalent oral diseases that exhibit pronounced temporal variation, and their occurrence and progression are closely associated with human evolution, lifestyle transitions, and genetic background. Archaeological research provides critical evidence for tracing the origin and evolutionary trajectory of dentomaxillofacial deformities. This review systematically summarizes archaeological findings of dentomaxillofacial deformities from prehistoric to historical periods, focusing on occlusal types, prevalence, and their spatiotemporal distribution patterns.

Apert Syndrome: Oral, Maxillofacial and Dental Management-A Narrative Clinical Review.

Apert syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by premature fusion of the cranial sutures, syndactyly of the extremities, and distinct craniofacial deformities. The condition results from mutations in the FGFR2 gene, which disrupt normal craniofacial growth and lead to complex functional and morphological abnormalities. Patients with Apert syndrome commonly present with stomatognathic abnormalities, which significantly affect oral function and facial development. The management of Apert syndrome requires a multidisciplinary therapeutic approach. Surgical treatment strategies are typic

Efficacy of Diclofenac Transdermal Patch in Therapeutic Extractions: A Literature Review.

Diclofenac sodium is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that effectively manages pain following therapeutic extractions. Post-extraction pain is commonly treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). In addition to their high bioavailability and long duration of action, transdermal NSAIDS have several other advantages. The review tries to understand and elucidate the use of transdermal patches, here Diclofenac, as a postoperative pain management modality. Drug delivery is one of the essential aspects of drug administration where transdermal patches are to be found equally eff

Treatment of a mandibular functional shift in an adolescent boy with temporomandibular disorder and crossbites.

A mandibular functional shift usually poses a challenge for orthodontists, especially when it is accompanied by a temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Accurate diagnosis and complete elimination of the etiologic factors are the keys to an esthetic and stable outcome. This article describes the treatment of a teenager with a mandibular functional shift, TMD symptoms, and facial asymmetry resulting from an asymmetric maxillary arch form and multiple crossbites as occlusal interferences. The treatment alternatives and effective orthodontic techniques are described. To optimize the treatment results
