Patellar tendon ossification after retrograde intramedullary nailing for distal femoral shaft fracture: A case report and review of the literature.

RATIONALE: Retrograde femoral nailing was one of the most important treatment means for distal femoral shaft fracture. However, studies regarding heterotopic ossification of the patellar tendon after retrograde intramedullary nailing for distal femoral shaft fracture are limited. We herein present a rare complication, namely heterotopic ossification of the patellar tendon, after retrograde intramedullary nailing for displaced femoral shaft fracture. PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a case of 25-year-old male with displaced femoral shaft fracture who was treated by retrograde intramedullary nailin

Increased risk of high-grade heterotopic ossification using direct lateral approach versus a muscle-sparing anterolateral approach to the hip: radiological results from a randomised trial in patients with a femoral neck fracture treated with hemiarthroplasty.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Hemiarthroplasty is a common treatment in patients with displaced femoral neck fracture. Due to positive claims of less pain, earlier mobilisation and favourable functional outcome, the anterior approaches to the joint are gaining in popularity. This randomised controlled trial investigated if component placement and heterotopic ossification differed between a muscle sparing anterior approach and a direct lateral approach. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 150 patients operated with an uncemented hemiarthroplasty, were randomised to anterolateral or direct lateral approach and ass

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva: a current review of imaging findings.

OBJECTIVE: Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva is a rare genetic disorder characterized by congenital skeletal deformities and soft tissue masses that progress to heterotopic ossification. Deformities of the great toes are distinctive, and heterotopic ossification in the soft tissues follows an expected anatomic and temporal pattern. In addition to heterotopic ossification, osteochondromata, middle ear ossification, demyelination, lymphedema, and venous thrombosis are characteristic. Awareness of this constellation of findings is important to early diagnosis and surveillance. CONCLUSIONS: R

Operative treatment of anterior heterotopic bone formation of the elbow in a patient with severe haemophilia A.

There is no statistical data on the incidence of heterotopic ossification among patients with haemophilia, and a few reports documenting this entity in haemophilia are available. Although post-traumatic heterotopic ossification about the elbow is a well-recognized complication, we are not aware of any previously reported case in haemophiliacs. An 8-year-old boy with severe haemophilia A presented with fixed elbow in 80 degrees of flexion. Radiographs disclosed a mature anterior heterotopic ossification in the form of complete ulnohumeral bony bridge. Surgical excision of the heterotopic bone w

Heterotopic ossificans in chronic venous insufficiency: a new consideration for clinical, aetiology, anatomy and pathophysiology staging.

OBJECTIVES: Heterotopic ossification is defined as the abnormal formation of true bone within extra-skeletal soft tissues. It may be associated with a variety of clinical conditions, but is most frequently seen with musculoskeletal trauma, neurologic injury or genetic abnormalities. It has also been described in patients with chronic venous insufficiency; however, it often goes underdiagnosed due to chronic ulceration that masks exam findings. To date, few reports of heterotopic ossification due to chronic venous disease exist within the literature with the most recent dating back to the 1970s

Head and neck manifestations of fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva: Clinical and imaging findings in 2 cases.

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva is a rare hereditary disorder characterized by progressive heterotopic ossification in muscle and connective tissue, with few reported cases affecting the head and neck region. Although plain radiographic findings and computed tomography features have been well documented, limited reports exist on magnetic resonance findings. This report presents 2 cases of fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, one with limited mouth opening due to heterotopic ossification of the lateral pterygoid muscle and the other with restricted neck movement due to heterotopic ossif

Long-term dental outcomes in patients with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva: a report of three cases of tooth extraction.

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is an extremely rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by congenital skeletal malformation and progressive heterotopic ossification. In the oral and maxillofacial region, deformity of the temporomandibular joint is a common feature of FOP, as well as restricted mouth opening derived from heterotopic ossification in the masticatory muscles. Since surgical procedures are generally not recommended because of the risk of flare-ups and increased heterotopic ossification, reports of tooth extractions and their outcomes in patients with FOP are limi

Fibula Free Flap Reconstruction of the Maxilla Leading to Extracapsular Ankylosis of the Mandible.

After en bloc resection of the maxilla or mandible, surgeons may choose to replace the missing bone and soft tissue with a fibula free flap (FFF). One of the complications that may arise during the healing of an FFF is heterotopic ossification along the free flap pedicle. Heterotopic ossification is most often noted incidentally on postoperative radiographs and rarely creates a functional deficit. Subperiosteal dissection of the pedicle from the bone during the harvest of the FFF is believed to be the main contributing factor that leads to this formation of bone along the flap soft tissue. Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis (DISH) as a Cause of Failure Following Distal Clavicle Excision A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is common spinal condition characterized by increased calcification and ossification of ligaments and entheses, typically in the anterior aspect of the spine. However, extraspinal manifestations of the disease can occur and depending on the degree and location of involvement, may become symptomatic. We present the case of a 63-year-old male with a history of DISH, who failed initial open distal clavicle excision due to the postoperative development of heterotopic bone bridging across the acromioclavicular joint. Revision open distal clavicle exci

Partial Femoral Diaphysectomy With Vastus Lateralis Interposition in a Paraplegic Patient With Severely Debilitating Hip Ankylosis: Low Risks and High Gains?

We present the case of a 56-year-old male unable to sit because of an ankylosed right hip. This ankylosis originated from combined neurogenic heterotopic ossifications (NHO) and traumatic heterotopic ossifications (THO) as a result of a road traffic accident. Because of multiple ossifications, the proximity of neurovascular structures, and chronic pressure ulcers, a resection was deemed unsafe. We opted for a new articulation distal to the ossifications in unstained tissue. A partial femoral diaphysectomy was performed just distal of the lesser trochanter. and the vastus lateralis was rotated

A novel Anti-ROS osteoblast-specific delivery system for ankylosing spondylitis treatment via suppression of both inflammation and pathological new bone formation.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a common rheumatic disorder distinguished by chronic inflammation and heterotopic ossification at local entheses sites. Currently available medications, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and TNF inhibitors, are limited by side effects, high costs and unclear inhibitory effects on heterotopic ossification. Herein, we developed manganese ferrite nanoparticles modified by the aptamer CH6 (CH6-MF NPs) that can efficiently scavenge ROS and actively deliver siRNA into hMSCs and osteoblasts in vivo f

Mkx-Deficient Mice Exhibit Hedgehog Signaling-Dependent Ectopic Ossification in the Achilles Tendons.

Heterotopic ossification is the abnormal formation of mineralized bone in skin, muscle, tendon, or other soft tissues. Tendon ossification often occurs from acute tendon injury or chronic tendon degeneration, for which current treatment relies heavily on surgical removal of the ectopic bony tissues. Unfortunately, surgery creates additional trauma, which often causes recurrence of heterotopic ossification. The molecular mechanisms of heterotopic ossification are not well understood. Previous studies demonstrate that Mkx is a transcription factor crucial for postnatal tendon fibril growth. Here

Early excision of heterotopic bone in the forearm.

Five patients undergoing early excision of heterotopic bone in the forearm with radiation therapy and indomethacin were reviewed. Inciting causes of heterotopic ossification included distal biceps tendon repairs, ulna fractures, and a fracture of the radius and ulna. Preoperative forearm rotation arc averaged 17 degrees. Excision was performed at an average of 4 months after injury. Patients were administered 500 to 1,000 cGy of radiation after surgery and received indomethacin for 6 weeks. At an average of 37 months after surgery the forearm rotation arc averaged 136 degrees. All patients had

[Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva. Apropos of a case].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Fibro-dysplasia ossificans progressive is a rare inherited disease, presumably transmitted as an autosomal dominant defect. The high level of spontaneous mutations explains the sporadic cases. Pre symptomatic diagnosis could be actually evoked by the association of progressive ossification of soft tissues with congenital anomalies of bones (metacarpal and metatarsal). The purpose of this study is to report a clinical case with a very severe course. CASE REPORT: A 10-year-old boy developed progressive ossification of muscles and soft tissues in multiple sites neck, back,

Early diagnosis of fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva.

BACKGROUND: Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva is a rare and disabling genetic condition characterized by congenital malformation of the great toes and by progressive heterotopic ossification in specific anatomic patterns. Most patients with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva are misdiagnosed early in life before the appearance of heterotopic ossification and undergo diagnostic procedures that can cause lifelong disability. Recently, the genetic cause of fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva was identified, and definitive genetic testing for fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva is now a

Computed tomography in the diagnosis of myositis ossificans - case report.

BACKGROUND: The term myositis ossificans refers to the formation of ossifications in the muscles, ligaments and fascias, usually as a result of trauma. Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva is a rare genetic disease in which heterotopic ossifications appear in early childhood and are accompanied by feet and spine defects. CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 31-year-old woman with massive heterotopic ossifications who suffered multiple injuries. We would like to emphasize the role of computed tomography in the exact localization of ossifications. CONCLUSIONS: Thanks to the volume rendering te

A follow-up report on the published paper Social and clinical impact of COVID-19 on patients with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva.

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare genetic disorder associated with increased immune activity and severe, progressive heterotopic ossification. We previously described a cohort of 32 patients with FOP who were either exposed to SARS-CoV-2 or received a COVID-19 vaccine1 and showed that these patients did not develop heterotopic ossification after COVID-19 vaccination. Here, we present additional clinical data from new subjects and additional long-term follow-up from the first cohort. We enrolled 15 new subjects between August 24th, 2021 and May 17th, 2022 and collected addit

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva: a case report.

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva or myositis ossificans is a rare disease characterised by bony deposits or the ossification of soft tissues. It transforms skeletal muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and aponeuroses into heterotopic bony deposits through an endochondral process. This leads to progressive immobility; patients are usually wheelchair-bound by the second decade of life and die of thoracic insufficiency by the fourth decade of life. There is no treatment apart from symptomatic treatment with steroids during flare-ups. Excision of heterotopic ossification is not recommended a

Comparison of adjacent segment degeneration five years after single level cervical fusion and cervical arthroplasty: a retrospective controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Cervical arthroplasty is indicated to preserve cervical motion and prevent accelerated adjacent segment degeneration. Whether accelerated adjacent segment degeneration is prevented in the long term is unclear. This trial compared adjacent segment degeneration in Bryan disc arthroplasty with that in anterior cervical decompression and fusion five years after the surgery. METHODS: We studied patients with single level degenerative cervical disc disease. The extent of adjacent segment degeneration was estimated from lateral X-rays. RESULTS: Twenty-six patients underwent single level

Outcomes of modified 2-incision technique with use of indomethicin in treatment of distal biceps tendon rupture.

Multiple surgical techniques for distal biceps tendon ruptures exist. Heterotopic ossification is an associated omplication of the 2-incision technique. The purpose of this study was to review the results of distal biceps tendon repairs via the modified 2-incision technique using indomethacin chemoprophylaxis. A retrospective review of 34 2-incision repairs of the distal biceps tendon was performed. All patients received 6 weeks of indomethacin treatment postoperatively to prophylax against heterotopic ossification. Outcome measures included disabilities of the arm, shoulder, and hand (DASH) s
