[Characteristics and recent trends in endemicity of human parasitic diseases in China].

An analysis of the nationwide survey of the distribution of human parasites in the light of the literature previously published, two major trends in the endemicity of parasitic diseases in China was observed. For one trend, the infection rate of E. histolytica, Fasciolopsis buski and soil-transmitted helminthasis etc. declined markedly. The second trend was that the prevalence of food-transmitted parasitic diseases (Trichinella spiralis, Clonorchis sinensis, Paragonimiasis, cysticercosis) and hydatidosis was increasing. The relationship between the social economic factors and the two trends we…

Latent and chronic infections imported from Southeast Asia.

This review is intended to remind physicians of exotic infections with latency of at least one year that could cause illness in refugees or US citizens exposed in Southeast Asia. Tuberculosis, melioidosis, and leprosy are the major chronic infections of bacterial origin. Intestinal protozoa, roundworms, and flatworms are considered with regard to pathogenic, potential and duration of infection. Malaria, filariasis, and schistosomiasis may be seen on occasion. Paragonimiasis and Chinese liver fluke infections are more common and may simulate other less exotic diseases.

Paragonimus westermani metacercariae in two freshwater crab species in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, as a possible source of infection in wild boars and sika deer.

Paragonimiasis is a particular foodborne parasitic disease that is endemic to southern Kyushu, including Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. We previously detected Paragonimus westermani triploid larvae in meat samples obtained from wild boars and sika deer hunted in Akune City, Kagoshima Prefecture. These mammals act as paratenic hosts and their meat is a source of human paragonimiasis. Paratenic host mammals and humans become infected with the lung fluke, P. westermani, following consumption of second intermediate hosts, freshwater crab species, namely, Geothelphusa dehaani or Sawagani in Japanese,…

[Purification of soluble egg antigen (SEA) 38 kDa molecule of Schistosoma japonicum and preliminary evaluation of its immunodiagnostic efficacy].

OBJECTIVE: To study the applicability of soluble egg antigen (SEA) 38 kDa molecule of Schistosoma japonicum in the immunodiagnosis of schistosomiasis. METHODS: The target immunodiagnositic antigen SEA 38 kDa molecule was separated and purified by SDS-PAGE and electroelution technique and evaluated by SDS-PAGE and Western blotting. To compare their immunodiagnostic efficacy, the purified SEA 38 kDa and SEA were used to examine the sera from 182 cases including 31 acute schistosomiasis patients, 31 chronic schistosomiasis patients, 60 normal human controls, 30 paragonimiasis patients and 30 clo…

High-resolution computed tomography findings of P. westermani.

Paragonimiasis westermani, or Oriental lung fluke, is a common parasitic zoonosis, which is acquired from eating the flesh of wild boar or freshwater crabs. After being ingested by humans, the larvae of P. westermani migrate across small intestinal mucosa into the intra-abdominal space, and then finally into to the pleural space and lung parenchyma. High-resolution CT findings of P. westermani consist of worm cysts, migration track, peripheral density, bronchial wall thickening, and centrilobular nodules, which prompt serological tests and detection of eggs in sputum or BAL fluid for definitiv…

A rare case of Ibuprofen-induced eosinophilic meningitis in a 13-year-old girl.

Eosinophilic meningoencephalitis is based on clinical manifestations and microscopic identification of eosinophils present in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). It is caused by a variety of helminthic infections with most common being angiostrongyliasis, gnathostomiasis, toxocariasis, cysticercosis, schistosomiasis, baylisascariasis, and paragonimiasis. Many case reports are there in which parasites have been found responsible, but there are rare reports of CSF eosinophilia associated with the use of drugs. We report a case of drug-induced (ibuprofen) eosinophilic meningitis in a healthy female who pr…

Chylothorax caused by Paragonimus westermani in a native Californian.

Paragonimiasis is a parasitic infection endemic in Asia but uncommon in the United States. It presents most frequently with cough and hemoptysis. Pleural effusions are common and can manifest occasionally as a pseudochylothorax, but a true chylothorax has, to our knowledge, never been reported. We report a case of a chylothorax from infection with Paragonimus westermani. The case is also unique because it occurred in a native Californian who had not traveled to Asia and was infected by eating raw crabs at a local sushi restaurant. The freshwater crabs had been imported from Asia.

Immunological studies on some bacterial and parasitic diseases in Thailand.

Over the past two decades a wide range of immunological studies have been carried out on organisms responsible for causing serious bacterial and parasitic diseases in Thailand. Particular emphasis has been placed on cholera, where investigations have been directed towards vaccine development and rapid diagnosis and on diagnosis of typhoid and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli. In the area of parasitic diseases emphasis has been directed especially to immunodiagnosis of helminthic diseases, including gnathostomiasis, paragonimiasis, opisthorchiasis, strongyloidiasis and trichinellosis. These stu…

Paragonimus westermani in Malaysian Felidae and Viverridae: probable modes of transmission in relation to host feeding habits.

Examination of naturally infected felids and viverrids in Malaysia confirmed previously published records which indicated that P. westermani occurred only in felid cats. Felis planiceps and F. temnickli were reported as new host records. Analysis of stomach contents revealed no crab remains in either family of cats, but confirmed that felids were strictly carnivorous while viverrids were often omnivorous. In feeding experiments, only viverrids ate the host crabs Potomiscus johorensis and Parathelphusa maculata. The probable transmission of P. westermani to felids via paratenic hosts was discus

Parasitic Infection Misdiagnosed As Bacterial Pneumonia: A Case Report.

Bacterial pneumonia is a common lung disorder, and the pathogenesis remain elusive. Parasitic infections of the lung are able to affect the … pecially when clinical features are not typical and routine tests are not specific. Therefore, more paragonimiasis cases can be diagnosed more effectively by the clinicians and misdiagnose should be avoided in future clinical practice.

[Dot-ELISA in the diagnosis of neurocysticercosis].

The dot-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect Cysticercus cellulosae antibodies in sera of patients with neurocysticercosis. Among 108 confirmed cases of neurocysticercosis 81.6-96.1% showed positive reactions. Two out of 54 normal control sera reacted at a serum dilution of 1:20, but none at a 1:40 (range 40-640). No cross reactions were observed with sera from cases of paragonimiasis and clonorchiasis, but it did occur to some extent with sera from cases of echinococcosis and cerebrovascular diseases. The results indicated that the dot-ELISA was sensitive, specific and economi…

Vector control of snail-mediated human trematode infections.

Inspite of the recent general acceptance of the use of safe and effective chemotherapeutic drugs in the treatment of major human trematode infections, vector control e.g. control of the snail intermediate host will continue to play an important role in programmes for controlling schistosomiasis, clonorchiasis, opisthorchiasis and paragonimiasis. The main vector control measures are: a) use of chemical pesticides or molluscicides and plants showing molluscicidal properties; b) biological control through introduction of competitor species or natural enemies of snails; c) alteration of the enviro…
