Cryptosporidium parvum is a zoonotic protozoan parasite that causes cryptosporidiosis, a disease characterized by intestinal tissue damage in animals and humans. The oocysts of Cryptosporidium parvum, which are the infective stage of this parasite in feces, are extremely small (4-6 μm in diameter), making microscopic detection and quantification difficult. In the present study, we developed a quantitative sugar-flotation in a cover-slide system (QUSIC), which is a novel, simple, sensitive, and cost-effective method for quantifying C. parvum oocysts in feces. Fecal samples from non-infected mic

This study examined the effects of levels of artificial Haemonchus contortus infection on lamb behaviour and physiology. Forty 6-month-old Romney-cross wethers were assigned to one of four treatments (n = 10/treatment): 8000 L3 larvae (High; H), 4000 L3 larvae (Medium; M), 1000 L3 larvae (Low; L), or water (Control; C). Lambs were monitored 1 week pre- and 6 weeks post-treatment. Weekly measurements included faecal egg counts, liveweight, blood counts, and cytokine concentrations (e.g., IL-6). Behaviour was continuously monitored using cameras and accelerometers. Faecal egg counts increased in

In regions with prolonged rainy seasons where hookworm and Strongyloides stercoralis (S. stercoralis) are co-endemic, the prevalence of hookworm infection frequently exceeds that of strongyloidiasis, despite both parasites sharing a similar route of infection via skin penetration by third-stage larvae (L3). Climate factors may contribute because rainwater can dilute stool, reducing bacterial abundance and stool-soluble component concentrations that may affect first-stage larvae (L1) development. In this study, we aimed to compare the stool-soluble component requirements of S. stercoralis and h

BACKGROUND: Reduced anthelmintic efficacy against small strongyles in horses is a widespread problem, yet recent data is scarce.
AIMS: This paper aims to investigate the current status of anthelmintic efficacy in the field in Germany, specifically focusing on pyrantel.
METHODS: The study included 1670 horses for which a total of 1913 dewormings were analysed. Of these, 1682 were performed with pyrantel, 56 with fenbendazole, 162 with macrocyclic lactones and 13 with other compounds (e.g. herbs). The faecal egg count reduction (FECR) was calculated with two methods, the faecal egg count reduc

In Sweden, it is recommended to treat rams at sheep markets with ivermectin and then keep them in quarantine to minimise the risk of transmission of Haemonchus contortus between farms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of this practise. Accordingly the gastrointestinal parasite status of 50 rams purchased at two sheep markets in central Sweden in autumn 2019 was investigated using faecal samples collected on the day of sale (test 1), 12 ± 3 days after ivermectin injection (test 2, in quarantine) and a few months later before inclusion in the new flocks (test 3). Improved management of livestock in resource-limited settings can provide a means towards improved human nutrition and livelihoods. However, gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) are a significant production-limiting factor. Anthelmintics play a role in GIN management; however, few anthelmintic classes are available in many low-middle-income countries. Utilising a limited range of classes may increase selection for anthelmintic resistance; therefore, strategies to reduce other selective pressures are of heightened importance. Avoiding anthelmintic underdosing is one such strategy, but it can be cha

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) can negatively impact all production classes of cattle, particularly growing cattle. A global decline in efficacy of broad-spectrum single-active anthelmintics requires alternative GIN control methods without the aid of novel drug classes. Here, we present a new fixed-dose combination injectable (FDCI) endectocide for cattle that combines doramectin (5 mg/ml) and levamisole hydrochloride (150 mg/ml). A 56-day comparative performance confinement backgrounding trial was conducted in stocker beef heifers (n = 1548) with confirmed GIN infections to (1) compare the

The liver fluke Fasciola hepatica is a highly pathogenic and zoonotic trematode with a cosmopolitan distribution. In livestock, infections may lead to significant economic losses if not diagnosed promptly and treated effectively. Particularly for small ruminants, the standard method for the detection of fluke infection is based on coproscopical methods such as the sedimentation method, which detects F. hepatica eggs in faecal samples. In this respect a recent innovative coproscopical approach to diagnose patent infections is the FLUKEFINDER® method, which relies on differential sieving before

Ascaridia galli infection models use eggs isolated from chicken excreta, worm uteri and worms cultured in artificial media. The aim of this study was to compare the infectivity of A. galli eggs isolated from these sources under two infection regimens. A 3 × 2 factorial arrangement was employed to test the infectivity of A. galli eggs from the three sources and two modes of infection (single or trickle infection). One hundred and fifty-six Isa-Brown one day-old cockerels randomly assigned to the six treatment groups (n = 26) were orally infected with embryonated A. galli eggs obtained from the

Effective gastrointestinal nematode management in livestock industries is becoming increasingly difficult due to the rise of anthelmintic resistance and changes in the temporal and geographical distribution of major gastrointestinal nematodes. Underpinning the response to these challenges is the need for a fast-tracked diagnostic identification technique, making it easier for livestock producers to make informed gastrointestinal nematode management decisions. The traditional 'gold-standard' approach, larval culture followed by morphological differentiation, is laborious and potentially inaccur

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) are damaging parasites of global sheep populations. The key weapons in fighting GINs have been anthelmintic drugs, but the emergence of drug-resistant parasites has meant that alternative control methods are needed. One of these alternatives is to breed for enhanced host resistance to GINs, and decades of research have estimated the genetic contribution to different measures of resistance to GINs and their genetic correlations with other desirable performance traits. It is clear that parasite resistance is a heritable trait that can be selected for. Despite th

The equine pinworm could become an increasingly common problem, as there are reports of failure in the control of this parasite. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of ivermectin (IVM) and IVM combined with pyrantel pamoate (PYR). Thirteen parasitological positive equines were treated with oral IVM (200 µg/kg) and therapeutic efficacy, clinical recovery and the egg reappearance period (ERP) were evaluated. In cases for which ERP was shorter than the pre-patent period (PPP), a second treatment was performed with IVM (200 µg/kg) + PYR (6.6 mg/kg), followed by the same evaluation cr

The present study explored the frequency of hair-sheep farms with gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) resistant to albendazole sulfoxide (AS), ivermectin (IVM) and levamisole (LEV) in the Yucatán peninsula, México, using the faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT), and compared the frequency of farms diagnosed with resistance using three different formulae. The survey included farms from the states of Campeche (9) and Yucatán (14) (2016-2019). Collaborating farms had >100 grazing ewes. Animals in the FECRT were > 12 months old, received no anthelmintic for >8 weeks and had ≥150 GIN eggs per gramm

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the main anthelmintics used for the control of trematodes in cattle in an endemic area in the humid Mexican tropics. A diagnostic study was carried out in nine cattle farms to determine the prevalence of flukes through faecal examination. Only three farms with more than 20 cows positive to trematodes were chosen to determine the effectiveness of commercial anthelmintics (triclabendazole, TCBZ; ivermectin + closantel, (IVM + CLOS); IVM + clorsulon, (CLORS); nitroxynil, NITROX). The prevalence of Fasciola hepatica was 27.1% and 29.

BACKGROUND: Controlled human hookworm infections could significantly contribute to the development of a hookworm vaccine. However, current models are hampered by low and unstable egg output, reducing generalizability and increasing sample sizes. This study aims to investigate the safety, tolerability, and egg output of repeated exposure to hookworm larvae.
METHODS: Twenty-four healthy volunteers were randomized, double-blindly, to 1, 2, or 3 doses of 50 Necator americanus L3 larvae at 2-week intervals. Volunteers were monitored weekly and were treated with albendazole at week 20.
RESULTS: Th

In this work, we compare and evaluate the efficiency of fosfatriclaben with three commercial fasciolicides in experimentally infected sheep. Fosfatriclaben is a novel prodrug derived from triclabendazole; it is highly water-soluble with excellent aqueous stability at pH 7, properties that make it ideal for developing intramuscular pharmaceutical compositions in the form of solutions. In order to compare, 30 mixed breed sheep, previously diagnosed negative to fluke eggs, were infected with 200 metacercariae of Fasciola hepatica, twice. Five groups of six animals/each were formed for treatments.

Species of Anoplocephalidae are cestodes affecting equines worldwide and causing many intestinal disorders. Between October 2010 and September 2013, 284 faecal samples of horses originating from Lazio Region (Central Italy) were tested for the presence of Anoplocephala sp. eggs by a classic copromicroscopic technique. Data regarding pasture‑dependence/non dependence, age, and sex of the horses were also collected. Statistical analysis, aimed at detecting possible associations between these variables and Anoplocephala sp. prevalence, was performed. Anoplocephala sp. eggs were found in 13% of te

BACKGROUND: Benzimidazoles (BZ) are a class of drugs widely used in veterinary and human medicine, creating a great selection pressure and the emergence of BZ resistance. We conducted a systematic review to assess the status of resistance and/or effectiveness reduction of BZ drugs in animal nematodes in Brazil, and make information accessible to the scientific community, as many studies are published in Portuguese. PubMed, SciELO Brasil, LILACS/Bireme, GNTD database, and Google Scholar were searched with no language restrictions.
