PTH fragments consisting of the C-terminal portion of the molecule may have biologic effects and may modify the actions of PTH. AIM: African-Americans (AA) with normal renal function have higher parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels than Caucasians (C). This difference was also noted in cross-sectional studies of patients on dialysis. The aim of the present study was to evaluate a new immunometric assay for intraoperative parathyroid hormone monitoring. The test was applied in 70 patients who underwent surgery for primary hyperthyroidism (pHPT) between 6/1999 and 6/2001. Pulsatile secretion of PTH in human subjects has been described recently. However, the pattern of PTH secretion in primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) remains to be characterized.
