Bovine Respiratory Disease Complex (BRD) poses a major threat to the cattle industry, primarily caused by the bacterial pathogens Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) and Mannheimia haemolytica (M. haemolytica). Current management strategies heavily rely on vaccines and antibiotics; however, the overuse of antibiotics has led to significant resistance issues, which underscores the urgent need for more effective vaccination approaches. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a novel combined vaccine that incorporates P. multocida A, M. haemolytica A6, and recombinant leukotoxin (rLkt), with th…

Cats are often described as carriers of Pasteurella multocida in their oral microbiota. This agent is thought to cause pneumonia, conjunctivitis, rhinitis, gingivostomatitis, abscess and osteonecrosis in cats. Human infection with P. multocida has been described in several cases affecting cat owners or after cat bites. In Brazil, the cat population is approximately 21 million animals and is increasing, but there are no studies of the presence of P. multocida in the feline population or of human cases of infection associated with cats. In this study, one hundred and ninety-one healthy cats from…

The reported incidences of co-participation of Mycoplasma capricolum capripneumoniae (Mccp) and Pasteurella multocida in increased severity and pathogenesis of goats with Contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP) in sub-Saharan Africa elicited the study's purpose. Using the preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analysis (PRISMA) guideline, two search engines, namely Google Scholar and PubMed, were queried to systematically review all the available literature on the current epidemiological status of CCPP and Pneumonic Pasteurellosis co-concurrently detected in goats and asses…

Pasteurella haemolytica biotype A, serotype 1 (P haemolytica A1) was the most commonly isolated Pasteurella species from 80 calves examined at necropsy from 40 outbreaks of respiratory disease, the majority of which were pathologically confirmed as bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis (transit fever; shipping fever). Similarly, nasopharyngeal swabs from in-contact and apparently healthy calves indicated the widespread presence of P haemolytica A1. Pasteurella multocida and other serotypes of P haemolytica A1 were found including six isolations of P haemolytica T10, a fairly common pathogen in sheep…

We report recurrent outbreaks of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis conjunctivitis in ducks and of fowl cholera in geese, occurring in stocks previously vaccinated with inactivated autogenous vaccines. Enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequence-based PCR and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis indicated reinfection with a new Y. pseudotuberculosis strain and vaccine evasion by the same Pasteurella multocida strain.

A forty-seven-year-old man was bitten by a dog on his left index finger. Despite initial antibiotic treatment, he developed acute osteomyelitis of the middle phalanx over the next three weeks. Pasteurella multocida and Bacteroides were isolated from the necrotic bone. Subsequently the infection was successfully treated by debridement and Tetracycline.

The Clemson University (CU) strain of live cholera vaccine administered in water (LCVW) was effective in immunizing turkeys against the pulmonary, arthritic, and cranial forms of fowl cholera. The Missouri strain of LCVW immunized turkeys against the pulmonary and septicemic forms of fowl cholera. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from the orifice of the auditory tube of 5% of the turkeys vaccinated with the CU strain 2 weeks postvaccination, but not 4 weeks after challenge. Mortality was not increased by administering the CU strain of LCVW at 5, 10, 20, and 40 x the standard dose of 4 x 10(8…

Porcine Respiratory Diseases Complex (PRDC) is a multifactorial disease that involves several bacterial pathogens, including Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (M. hyopneumoniae), Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (A. pleuropneumoniae), Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida), Glaesserella parasuis (G. parasuis), and Streptococcus suis (S. suis). In pigs, the infection may cause lesions such pleurisy, which can lead to carcass condemnation. Hence, 1015 carcasses were selected from three different commercial pig farms, where the respiratory conditions were evaluated using slaughterhouse pleurisy evaluation sy…

As part of a study to determine the cause(s) of population decline and low survival of pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) neonates on Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge (HMNAR), Oregon (USA), 55 of 104 neonates captured during May 1996 and 1997 were necropsied (n = 28, 1996; n = 27, 1997) to determine cause of death. Necropsies were conducted on fawns that died during May, June, or July of each year. The objectives of this study were to report the occurrence and pathology of pasteurellosis in neonates and determine if the isolated strain of Pasteurella multocida was unique. Septicemic paste…

Vaccines are very effective in providing protection against many infectious diseases. However, it has proven difficult to develop highly efficacious vaccines against some pathogens and so there is a continuing need to improve vaccine technologies. The first successful and widely used vaccines were based on attenuated pathogens (e.g., laboratory passaged Pasteurella multocida to vaccinate against fowl cholera) or closely related non-pathogenic organisms (e.g., cowpox to vaccinate against smallpox). Subsequently, live vaccines, either attenuated pathogens or non-pathogenic microorganisms modifie…

Bovine respiratory disease complex is a major disease affecting the global cattle industry. Multiple infections by viruses and bacteria increase disease severity. Previously, we reported that bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) infection increases adherence of Pasteurella multocida to human respiratory and bovine kidney epithelial cells. To examine the interaction between the virus and bacteria in bovine respiratory cells, we generated respiratory epithelial cell lines from bovine trachea (bTEC), bronchus (bBEC), and lung (bLEC). Although all established cell lines were infected by BRSV …

Growth curves at 37 C for the Clemson University strain of Pasteurella multocida were about the same in either brain-heart-infusion broth or in a recently developed broth called "special broth TV". Counts in both broths were usually greater than 1 x 10(9) viable bacteria per ml. With the addition of 5 g of dried skim milk to each 100 ml of broth culture in the stationary phase of the growth curve, only a slight decrease in viable counts occurred over the next 7 to 14 days when held at 4 C. Such stabilization of broth cultures of P. multocida gives added flexibility to the use of fresh cultures…

Lungs from 191 slaughter pigs with gross lesions indicative of enzootic pneumonia of pigs (EPP) and 80 grossly normal lungs, all originating from 9 different herds, were subjected to microbiological and pathological examinations. The microbiological studies included both bacterial and mycoplasmal culture and also testing for Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae antigen in tissue by indirect immunofluorescent technique. M. hyopneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida and Mycoplasma hyorhinis were detected in 83%, 43% and 37% of the pneumonic lungs, respectively. Mycoplasma flocculare was the most frequently isolat…

Infection with Pasteurella multocida can induce pyoendometritis, pyosalpingitis, and ovarian abscesses in rabbits. The likelihood of rabbits developing clinical pasteurellosis is predisposed by factors such as buildup of ammonia fumes, ambient temperature changes and drafts, reproduction, older age, existence of carriers, and poor sanitation. Traditionally, prevention of pasteurellosis in rabbits has focused on identifying suspected carriers and culling those animals from the rabbitry.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Pneumonia is the most prevalent respiratory infection in sheep, significantly impacting their health and welfare. This study aimed to isolate Pasteurella spp. and other bacterial organisms from pneumonic sheep lungs and also assess their antibiotic susceptibility.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional abattoir-based study was conducted at Tamale and Kumasi abattoirs. Seventy-five ovine pneumonic lungs were randomly sampled to culture and isolate bacterial organisms associated with ovine pneumonia. The Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method was utilized to evaluate antibiotic

The occurrence of members of the Pasteurellaceae and Neisseriaceae families was studied in dogs and cats. A total of 110 nasal and pharyngeal swab samples from 47 dogs and 8 cats were collected. Most of the strains were identified by 16S rDNA sequencing, except Frederiksenia canicola and Pasteurella multocida where species-specific polymerase chain reactions were applied. The most frequently isolated species was F. canicola, which occurred only in dogs, mainly in the pharyngeal cavity. The second commonest bacterium, P. multocida was found in both types of samples and in both hosts. Other spec…
