Mobile app-based intervention for paternal perinatal depression, anxiety, and stress: A randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Paternal perinatal mental health significantly impacts family outcomes, yet fathers are often overlooked and underserved in mental health services. This study evaluates the efficacy of a mindfulness-based cognitive behaviour therapy intervention delivered via mobile app to address paternal perinatal depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms. METHOD: A randomised controlled trial was conducted with perinatal fathers experiencing moderate depression, anxiety, or stress symptoms. Participants were assigned to either the Rover app mindfulness-based CBT intervention (n = 81) or an activ

Paternal iron deficiency and rapamycin supplementation influence antioxidants status, autophagy and lifespan in Drosophila melanogaster.

BACKGROUND: Paternal iron deficiency (ID) is increasingly recognized for its intergenerational health effects. Rapamycin, on the other hand, is known for modulating metabolism, enhancing autophagy, and promoting longevity. This study explores the impact of paternal ID and rapamycin intervention on iron metabolism, antioxidant status, autophagy, telomere regulation, and lifespan in Drosophila melanogaster. METHODS: Male flies (F0) were fed an iron-deficient diet for 14 days, followed by a 30-day intervention with either a normal or rapamycin-supplemented diet. F0 ID males were crossed with nor

Paternal family history of premature atherosclerotic disease and perinatal death: A population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Studies have reported that pregnancies conceived by fathers with modifiable cardiovascular risk factors are at higher risk of ending in losses compared to those without such risk factors. Our objective was to examine the association between paternal family history _a non-modifiable risk factor_ of premature atherosclerotic disease and perinatal death. METHODS: This is a population-based cohort study. Information on fathers, aged 18-50 years who participated in three population-based health surveys conducted in Norway during 1974-2003 was linked to their singleton births registered

Paternal and Maternal Exposures to Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances and Child Behavioral Difficulties: A Parental Comparison Study.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widespread environmental pollutants with documented developmental toxicity. Prior research of prenatal PFAS exposure and offspring neurodevelopment did not consider the possible influence from paternal exposure. Using the INUENDO cohort, we studied 334 father-mother-singleton triads enrolled from antenatal clinics in Greenland, Poland, and Ukraine. We measured five PFAS in parental serum samples collected around the 31 weeks of gestation. We assessed child behavioral difficulties at ages 5-9 years by the parent-rated Strength and Difficulties Ques

Associations of maternal and paternal characteristics with cardiac malformations using real-world data and machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Effective prevention of cardiac malformations is constrained by limited understanding of etiology. We used 2011-2021 MarketScan US insurance claims data to identify and characterize associations between maternal and paternal characteristics and non-chromosomal cardiac malformations. METHODS: Among 693,483 singleton live-birth pregnancies of women linked to infants (of which 488,146 linked to fathers), odds ratios were estimated between 2000 clinical diagnostic and medication codes (500 clinical and 500 medication codes each for mothers and fathers) and cardiac malformations (n = 7

Redox-Driven Epigenetic Modifications in Sperm: Unraveling Paternal Influences on Embryo Development and Transgenerational Health.

Male-factor infertility accounts for nearly half of all infertility cases, and mounting evidence points to oxidative stress as a pivotal driver of sperm dysfunction, genetic instability, and epigenetic dysregulation. In particular, the oxidative DNA lesion 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) has emerged as a central mediator at the interface of DNA damage and epigenetic regulation. We discuss how this lesion can disrupt key epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation, histone modifications, and small non-coding RNAs, thereby influencing fertilization outcomes, embryo development, and offspr

Fertility in male patients with familial Mediterranean fever and paternal effect of FMF on pregnancy outcomes and complications.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the impact of Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) and its treatment on male infertility, and the paternal effect of FMF on pregnancy outcomes or complications. METHODS: We enrolled 282 adult male FMF patients and excluded 102 for never attempting pregnancy. Demographic and clinical data, including MEFV mutation status and treatment history, were collected. Fertility status and pregnancy outcomes were assessed through interviews and medical records. Statistical analysis was performed using Fisher's exact test, with significance set at p < 0.05. RESULTS: Amon

Association between paternal involvement in childcare and child injury: the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS).

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated that paternal involvement in childcare for infants up to 6 months of age can prevent injuries in children up to 18 months of age. However, the relationship after 18 months of age has not been clearly established. Therefore, this study investigated the association between paternal involvement in childcare at 6 months of age and injuries in children between birth and 4 years of age. METHODS: This study analysed data from 72,343 children and mothers who participated in the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS). Seven items of paternal involv

Maternal 129S1/SvImJ background attenuates the placental phenotypes induced by chronic paternal alcohol exposure.

Paternal alcohol use is emerging as a plausible driver of alcohol-related growth and patterning defects. Studies from our lab using an inbred C57Bl/6 J mouse model suggest that these paternally-inherited phenotypes result from paternally programmed deficits in the formation and function of the placenta. The 129S1/SvImJ genetic background is typically more susceptible to fetoplacental growth defects due to strain-specific differences in placental morphology. We hypothesized that these placental differences would sensitize 129S1/SvImJ-C57Bl/6 J hybrid offspring to paternally-inherited fetoplacen

Paternal obesity induces subfertility in male offspring by modulating the oxidative stress-related transcriptional network.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The effects of fathers' high-fat diet (HFD) on the reproductive health of their male offspring (HFD- F1) remain to be elucidated. Parental obesity is known to have a negative effect on offspring fertility, but there are few relevant studies on the effects of HFD-F1 on reproductive function. METHODS: We first succeeded in establishing the HFD model, which provides a scientific basis in the analysis of HFD-F1 reproductive health. Next, we assessed biometric indices, intratesticular cellular status, seminiferous tubules and testicular transcriptomic homeostasis in HFD-F1. F

Low-income fathers are emotionally resilient: A qualitative exploration of paternal emotions across early parenting.

Emotions play an important role in fostering positive parenting and healthy child development. This qualitative study explored the affective experiences of racially diverse US fathers with low income across the prenatal, postnatal, and early childhood periods. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 fathers. Interview questions asked about fathers' early parenting experiences that elicit parenting emotions of different valence. Results from thematic analysis demonstrated activation of multiple emotions depending on different proximal and distal experiences. Specific to proximal exper

Prenatal paternal anxiety symptoms predict child DHEA levels and internalizing symptoms during adrenarche.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined (1) whether measures of paternal anxious and depressive symptoms collected prenatally and during a follow-up assessment when the child was in middle childhood, predict child neuroendocrine outcomes, and (2) whether neuroendocrine outcomes are intermediate factors between paternal mental health and child cognitive/behavioral outcomes. Middle childhood coincides with increased autonomy as the child transitions into grade school, and with adrenarche, as the maturing adrenal gland increases secretion of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfated metabolite (DH

Chronic paternal alcohol exposures induce dose-dependent changes in offspring craniofacial shape and symmetry.

Although dose-response analyses are a fundamental tool in developmental toxicology, few studies have examined the impacts of toxicant dose on the non-genetic paternal inheritance of offspring disease and dysgenesis. In this study, we used geometric morphometric analyses to examine the impacts of different levels of preconception paternal alcohol exposure on offspring craniofacial shape and symmetry in a mouse model. Procrustes ANOVA followed by canonical variant analysis of geometric facial relationships revealed that Low-, Medium-, and High-dose treatments each induced distinct changes in cra

Effects of Fish Oil Supplementation on Reducing the Effects of Paternal Obesity and Preventing Fatty Liver in Offspring.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a serious public health concern, which calls for appropriate diet/nutrition intervention. Fish oil (FO) has several benefits in reducing obesity, but its intergenerational role in reducing the effects of paternal obesity has not been established. Hence, we hypothesized that FO supplementation to an obese father during the pre-conceptional period could improve the metabolic health of the offspring, specifically in the liver. Three groups of male mice were fed with a low-fat (LF), high-fat (HF), or high-fat diet supplemented with FO (HF-FO) for 10 week

Associations between unintended fatherhood and paternal mental health problems: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Unintended pregnancies are linked to adverse parental mental health, yet little attention has been given to this relationship in fathers specifically. We aimed to meta-analyse associations between unintended pregnancies and mental health problems in fathers with children aged ≤36 months. METHODS: We conducted keyword searches of Medline, CINAHL, Academic Search Complete, PsycInfo and Embase to February 2, 2022, and hand searched included reference lists. RESULTS: Of 2826 records identified, 23 studies (N = 8085 fathers), reporting 29 effects, were eligible for meta-analysis. Incl

"Cocktail" of environmental chemicals and early reproductive outcomes of IVF: The insight from paternal and maternal exposure.

BACKGROUND: Humans are exposed to various chemicals, including organophosphate esters (OPEs), phthalates (PAEs), and phenols. The effects on early reproductive outcomes of in vitro fertilization (IVF) remain unclear. METHODS: We recruited 192 women and 157 men who underwent IVF treatment. A total of forty-nine urinary chemicals were detected, including six OPEs, fifteen PAEs, six parabens, two chlorophenols, nine bisphenols, five benzophenones, and six synthetic phenolic antioxidants. We examined the individual and joint effects of parental chemical exposure on early reproductive outcomes. R

Androgenetic/biparental mosaicism in a diploid mole-like conceptus: report of a case with triple paternal contribution.

Hydatidiform moles (HMs) are divided into two types: partial hydatidiform mole (PHM) which is most often diandric monogynic triploid and complete hydatidiform mole (CHM) which is most often diploid androgenetic. Morphological features and p57 immunostaining are routinely used to distinguish both entities. Genetic analyses are required in challenging cases to determine the parental origin of the genome and ploidy. Some gestations cannot be accurately classified however. We report a case with atypical pathologic and genetic findings that correspond neither to CHM nor to PHM. Two populations of v
