Pathology of small airways disease.

CONTEXT: The term small airways disease encompasses a generally poorly understood group of lung diseases that may arise primarily within the small airways or secondarily from diseases primarily affecting the bronchi or lung parenchyma. Their histology may be confusing; however, because treatments and prognoses vary, correct pathologic diagnosis is important. OBJECTIVE: To present a nonexhaustive review of the pathology of primary and secondary small airways diseases, including small airways disease related to tobacco; to various other exposures, including mineral dusts; to diseases involving …

The pathology of alcohol hangover.

Research on human subjects analyzing blood and urine samples determined biological correlates that may explain the pathology of alcohol hangover. These analyses showed that concentrations of various hormones, electrolytes, free fatty acids, triglycerides, lactate, ketone bodies, cortisol, and glucose were not significantly correlated with reported alcohol hangover severity. Also, markers of dehydration (e.g., vasopressin) were not significantly related to hangover severity. Some studies report a significant correlation between blood acetaldehyde concentration and hangover severity, but most co…

Molecular pathology of myeloproliferative neoplasms.

Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs; formerly chronic myeloproliferative disorders) are a class of myeloid hematologic malignancies that represent a stem cell-derived expansion of 1 or more hematopoietic cell lineages. The current 2008 World Health Organization system recognizes 8 types of MPN: chronic myelogenous leukemia, chronic neutrophilic leukemia, polycythemia vera, primary myelofibrosis, essential thrombocythemia, chronic eosinophilic leukemia, mastocytosis, and myeloproliferative neoplasm, unclassifiable. This review summarizes the salient characteristics of the MPNs, with emphasis on

Tau pathology and future therapeutics.

The current review discusses microtubules and tau in the healthy brain and move on to the underling pathology of Alzheimer's disease (AD) with emphasis on tau and neurofibrillary tangles. Tangles have been associated with cognitive dysfunction causing neurodegeneration in the absence of plaques. AD, the most abundant tauopathy is characterized by β-amyloid plaques and tau tangles. An abundance of tau inclusions, in the absence of β-amyloid deposits, defines Pick's disease (frontotemporal lobar degeneration), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), corticobasal degeneration (CBD) and other diseas…

Current concepts in cervical pathology.

CONTEXT: The correct diagnosis and reporting of cervical in situ and invasive carcinoma are essential for the appropriate clinical managemen … inctions as well as to review important factors related to prognosis that should be included in the pathology report. DATA SOURCES: Review of current literature. CONCLUSIONS: There are many mimics and variants of cervical squamous and glandular lesions that can be resolved with ancillary studies and careful histologic examination. Prognostically important …

Pathology of pineal parenchymal tumors.

Pinea l parenchymal tumors (PPTs) are neuroepithelial tumors that arise from pineocytes or their precursors. According to the currently revised WHO classification of tumors of the central nervous system, PPTs are subdivided into well-differentiated pineocytoma, poorly differentiated pineoblastoma, and PPT with intermediate differentiation (PPTID). Pineocytomas are slow-growing neoplasms composed of small mature cells resembling pineocytes. Large pineocytomatous rosettes are the most characteristic appearance. Pineoblastomas are the most primitive form and have a highly malignant biological beh

Dendritic pathology in Alzheimer's disease.

Dendritic pathology and decrease of dendritic spine density are prominent phenomena in early cases of Alzheimer's disease, which correlate significantly with the progressive decline of the mental faculties. In previous studies we have described the pathological alterations of the dendrites and the dendritic spines in the prefrontal area of the cortex and the cerebellum. In this study we attempted to describe the morphological alterations of the dendrites and the dendritic spines, quantifying them in the acoustic and the visual cortices of eleven cases of Alzheimer's disease, applying Golgi sta…

Recent developments in vulvovaginal pathology.

This review discusses recent developments in vulvovaginal pathology. A variety of morphologically bland mesenchymal lesions occur at this site with considerable histological and immunohistochemical overlap. Aggressive angiomyxoma exhibits HMGA2 immunoreactivity in approximately 50% of cases, and this nuclear transcription factor is emerging as a useful and relatively specific marker for aggressive angiomyxoma, although occasional vulvovaginal smooth muscle neoplasms are positive. HMGA2 is useful in the diagnosis of aggressive angiomyxoma and its distinction from mimics, in the evaluation of re…

Tau aggregates and tau pathology.

There is controversy in some neurodegenerative disorders whether the presence of aberrant aggregates in a neuron could have a toxic or a protective effect. In some disorders like in encephalopathies (prion disease), protein aggregates are toxic for the neuron. In other disorders, like Huntington disease, a protective role has been suggested for the aggregates of huntingtin. In this paper, we review the role of tau aggregation and hypothesize that tau aggregates could have an insufficient protective role in damaged neurons.

CONCLUSIONS: Nodular neck lesions mimicking a thyroid pathology (thyroid nodules or metastatic lymph nodes) are rare but can represent a tough challenge for surgeons who might fall into incorrect surgical approaches, resulting in high morbidity. Pathology of the olfactory nerve.

The olfactory system and especially the olfactory bulb (OB) as the first relay in the olfactory system represent highly plastic structures. For example, OB volume partly reflects the degree of afferent neural activity. Research indicates that smell deficits leading to a reduced sensory input result in structural changes at the level of the OB. Reduced OB volumes also may be considered characteristic of parosmia. Apart from discussing the clinical implications of these findings, the radiologic basics for assessment of olfactory-eloquent structures are addressed in detail.

Advances in salivary gland pathology.

This review summarizes the new findings on salivary gland pathology under the following categories: immunohistochemistry; molecular genetics; newly recognized tumour types; known tumour entities with new findings; and progression of salivary gland tumours. In the application of immunohistochemistry, CD117 can aid in highlighting the luminal cell component of various salivary gland tumours, whereas p63 or maspin can aid in highlighting the abluminal cell component. A high Ki67 index remains the most useful marker to predict adverse outcome in salivary gland carcinoma. Specific chromosomal trans…
