Efficacy of peer-led interventions to reduce unprotected anal intercourse among men who have sex with men: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of peer-led interventions in reducing unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) among men who have sex with men (MSM). METHODS: Randomized clinical trials (RCTs), quasi-experimental studies, pre- and post-intervention studies without control groups, and serial cross-sectional assessments involving peers delivering interventions among MSM and published as of February 2012 were identified by systematically searching 13 electronic databases and cross-referencing. Effect sizes (ES) were calculated as the changes of stan

Rumination mediates the relationship between peer alienation and eating pathology in young adolescent girls.

PURPOSE: This study examined whether rumination, the tendency to passively and repeatedly dwell on negative events, mediated the relationship between peer alienation and eating disorder symptoms among adolescent girls. METHODS: Participants included 101 girls (ages 10-14; 47% Hispanic, 24% African American) who completed questionnaires regarding peer relationships, symptoms of eating pathology, rumination, and depressive symptoms. RESULTS: Girls who reported experiencing more peer alienation reported a higher degree of pathological eating symptoms. The relationship between peer alienation an

A comprehensive program for children with gender variant behaviors and gender identity disorders.

This article describes a clinical program designed to address broadly defined mental health needs of children who experience stress related to not fitting into normative gender types and argues for the need for integrated services that address the spectrum of gender variance. An array of services useful to children and their families is proposed. The article describes the clinical population served, common clinical and social problems, and a rationale for the interventions provided.

The experiences of young people with Epidermolysis Bullosa Simplex: a qualitative study.

The objective of this study was to explore the experiences of young people with Epidermolysis Bullosa Simplex (EBS). Eleven participants aged 10 -14 years were interviewed and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was employed. A key theme was 'self as different'. This related to experiences of negative treatment and exclusion from peers; a lack of understanding of others about the condition; and a sense of the self as 'wrong'. Findings indicate the importance of providing appropriate psychological and peer support, as well as wider community education and intervention, as part of the holis

Patient resources in the therapeutic education of haemophiliacs in France: their skills and roles as defined by consensus of a working group.

The activities of 'expert patients' or 'patient tutors', who help educate their peers, are gaining recognition in the health care system. This study investigates the role played by such patients in therapeutic education programmes organized by caregivers to validate the role of patients in implementing the therapeutic education of haemophilic patients and to define the skills required for such activities. This study employs the consensus methodology recommended by France's National Authority for Health. The working group includes seven caregivers from Hemophiliac Treatment Centers (HTCs) and t

Theory-based processes that promote the remission of substance use disorders.

Four related theories about the personal and social resources that shield individuals from developing substance use disorders and foster the process of remission from these disorders are described. These theories are social control theory, behavioral economics and behavioral choice theory, social learning theory, and stress and coping theory. Next, the social processes specified by these theories are highlighted, including the provision of support, goal direction, and monitoring; engagement in rewarding activities other than substance use, exposure to abstinence-oriented norms and models, and

They only see it when the sun shines in my ears: exploring perceptions of adolescent hearing aid users.

Hard-of-hearing (HOH) young people may encounter multiple challenges to their educational, social, and emotional development. The benefits of wearing hearing aids to enhance communication may be countered by negative stigma associated with hearing aids. This study explored the experience of 16 bilaterally, moderately to severely HOH adolescents in mainstream education to understand their perceptions of using hearing aids. A core category of "normality" emerged from the data, which captures the predominant issue for these young people. The sense of being normal may be situationally determined,

Effects of a peer-mediated phonological skill and reading comprehension program on reading skill acquisition for middle school students with reading disabilities.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a peer-mediated instructional approach on the teaching of phonological skills and reading comprehension for middle school (sixth- to eighth-grade) students with reading disabilities. All students (n = 38) were identified as having learning disabilities and reading at the third-grade level or below. One group was taught using a peer-mediated phonological skill program, Linguistics Skills Training (LST), and a peer-mediated reading comprehension program, Peer Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS). The contrast group was taught in the more trad

Threat perception bias in nonreferred, socially anxious children.

Investigated whether socially anxious children display a threat perception bias. A sample of 252 primary school children ages 8 to 13 years were exposed to ambiguous stories of social situations and instructed to find out as quickly as possible whether a story was scary. Furthermore, children were invited to tell how each story would end and to judge how they would feel when actually confronted with that situation. The main results can be summarized as follows. First, socially anxious children displayed lower thresholds for threat perception than control children. In other words, compared with

Locomotive stereotyped behavior in cynomolgus macaques, Macaca fascicularis.

Primate infants separated from their mothers and kept alone for a long period may exhibit behavioral disorders and develop stereotyped behavior according to genetic predispositions of the infants and environmental factors such as characteristics of the cage. However, it is not clear whether the locomotive and repetitive stereotyped behaviors are related to maternal separation or isolation rearing early in life. The locomotive and repetitive stereotyped behaviors and their relationship were examined with 65 juveniles of cynomolgus macaques kept under artificial conditions. All infants were sepa

The value of interviewing family and friends in assessing life stressors.

A reliability study of a life events questionnaire administered to 117 pairs of respondents indicated that a "significant other" (family member or friend) added approximately 29% new information to that gathered from the patient alone. A validity check of this information with a "knowledgeable" third party confirmed approximately 80% of the events reported by the subjects and significant others. The findings suggest that studies designed to collect information about the occurrence of specific life stressors would obtain more reliable and no less valid data from separate interviews of patients

Social anxiety symptoms and drinking behaviors among college students: the mediating effects of drinking motives.

The impact of social anxiety on negative alcohol-related behaviors among college students has been studied extensively. Drinking motives are considered the most proximal indicator of college student drinking behavior. The current study examined the mediating role of drinking motives in the relationship that social anxiety symptoms have with problematic (alcohol consumption, harmful drinking, and negative consequences) and safe (protective behavioral strategies) drinking behaviors. Participants were 532 undergraduates who completed measures of social anxiety, drinking motives, alcohol use, harm
