When the stimuli in one perceptual class (A') become related to the stimuli in another perceptual class (B'), the two are functioning as a single linked perceptual class. A common linked perceptual class would be the sounds of a person's voice (class A') and the pictures of that person (class B'). Such classes are ubiquitous in real world settings. We describe the effects of a variety of training procedures on the formation of these classes. The results could account for the development of naturally occurring linked perceptual classes. Two perceptual classes (A' and B') were formed in Experime

OBJECTIVE: Results of objective clinical tests (e.g., measures of speech understanding in noise) often conflict with subjective reports of hearing aid benefit and satisfaction. The Performance-Perceptual Test (PPT) is an outcome measure in which objective and subjective evaluations are made by using the same test materials, testing format, and unit of measurement (signal-to-noise ratio, S/N), permitting a direct comparison between measured and perceived ability to hear. Two variables are measured: a Performance Speech Reception Threshold in Noise (SRTN) for 50% correct performance and a Percep

Reversal errors (e.g., confusing b with d, or R with Я) are common in beginning readers and often persist in individuals with developmental dyslexia due to mirror invariance-an evolutionary-old perceptual tendency of processing mirror images as equivalent. This study investigated whether dyslexic adults still struggle with mirror-image discrimination when processing reversible letters (i.e., differing only by orientation; e.g., d, b, p) and nonreversible letters (i.e., differing also in shape; e.g., f, t, r). In a masked priming lexical decision task, one letter of the prime was manipulated by

PURPOSE: Laryngeal framework surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia but cannot be tolerated by some patients. To develop a new procedure for these patients, we evaluated voice outcomes after arytenoid adduction combined with medialization laryngoplasty under general anesthesia using a laryngeal mask airway (LMA) for unilateral vocal cord paralysis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven consecutive patients with severe unilateral vocal cord paralysis, with a maximum phonation time of less than 5 seconds, underwent arytenoid adduction combined with medialization laryngoplasty under general

People who report visual perceptual distortions, typically when reading, that are alleviated by using coloured filters are described as suffering from 'Meares-Irlen Syndrome'. A recent double-masked placebo-controlled trial showed that this condition cannot be solely explained as a placebo effect and that the beneficial filter is idiosyncratic and sometimes needs to be highly specific. Several mechanisms have been suggested for Meares-Irlen Syndrome including ocular motor (binocular and accommodative) anomalies, a sensitivity to patterned stimuli (pattern glare), and a deficit of the transient

Hearing-in-noise (HIN) perception requires a complex interaction between sensory and cognitive functions. Older adults commonly report HIN difficulties, which contribute to social isolation, depression, and cognitive decline. Musical experience has emerged as a potential protective factor against age-related HIN deficits, with auditory working memory identified as a mediator. However, inconsistent findings regarding musicianship advantages persist, and research examining whether these benefits extend to older adults remains limited. In this study, we investigated the effects of musicianship on

The goal of this research was to determine the contributions of auditory neural processing and cognitive abilities to predict performance on a speech-in-noise perception task in young, normal hearing adults. Two experiments were performed, each with separate cohorts of ∼30 young adults with normal hearing who performed a competing talker task which included a high-pass filtered condition that was designed to be more sensitive to auditory nerve functioning than are commonly used speech-in-noise perception tests. Predictors of performance on this competing talker task included ABR waves I and V

OBJECTIVE: To explore the behavioural and functional performance of a group of children with conductive unilateral hearing loss (UHL) due to congenital aural atresia.
METHOD: Twelve children aged 7 to 16 years (Mage 10.0, SD 3.1 years) formed the UHL group and 15 age-matched children (Mage 9.5, SD 3.6 years) with normal hearing formed the control group. Auditory skills were assessed using tests of sound localisation, spatial speech perception in noise, and self-ratings of auditory abilities (Listening Inventory for Education; LIFE and Speech, Spatial and Qualities of Hearing scale; SSQ).

The goal of the present study was to compare forward masking patterns by stimulation of low and high rates in cochlear implant users. Postlingually deafened Cochlear Nucleus® device users participated in the study. In experiment 1, two maskers of different rates (250 and 1000 pulses per second) were set at levels that produced equal masking for a probe presented at the same electrode as the maskers. This aligned the two masking functions at the on-site probe location. Then their forward masking patterns for the far probes were compared. Results showed that slope of the masked probe-threshold d

OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine whether the results of audiological tests and tinnitus characteristics, particularly tinnitus pitch and minimum masking level (MML), depend on tinnitus etiology, and what other etiology-specific tinnitus characteristics there are.
DESIGN: The patients answered questions concerning tinnitus laterality, duration, character, aggravation, alleviation, previous treatment, and circumstances of onset. The results of tympanometry, pure-tone audiometry, distortion-product otoacoustic emissions, tinnitus likeness spectrum, MML, and uncomfortable loudness level were eva

Individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia show deficiencies of basic neurophysiological sorting mechanisms. This study further investigated this issue, focusing on the two phenomena, laterality of coding and auditory forward masking. A specific audiometric method for use in psychiatry was the measuring set up to register brain stem audiograms (ABRs). A sample of 49 schizophrenic patients was compared with three control groups consisting of healthy reference subjects (n=49), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) patients (n=29), Asperger syndrome (AS) patients (n=13) and drug-induced p

BACKGROUND: Anxiety Sensitivity (AS), the tendency to fear the thoughts, symptoms, and social consequences associated with the experience of anxiety, is associated with increased risk for developing anxiety disorders. Some evidence suggests that higher scores on the Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI), a measure of the AS construct, are associated with activation of the anterior insular cortex during overt emotion perception. Although the ASI provides subscale scores measuring Physical, Mental Incapacitation, and Social Concerns of AS, no study has examined the relationship between these factors a

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss and age interfere with the auditory system's ability to process temporal changes in the acoustic signal. A key unresolved question is whether high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss (HFSNHL) affects temporal processing in the low-frequency region where hearing loss is minimal or nonexistent. A second unresolved question is whether changes in hearing occur in middle-aged subjects in the absence of HFSNHL.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to examine the influence of HFSNHL and aging on the auditory temporal processing abilities of low-frequency audi

The study investigated the time course of the effects of acoustic and electric stimulation on the electrically evoked compound action potential (ECAP). Adult guinea pigs were used in acute experimental sessions. Bursts of acoustic noise and high-rate (5000 pulses/s) electric pulse trains were used as maskers. Biphasic electric pulses were used as probes. ECAPs were recorded from the auditory nerve trunk. Simultaneous masking of the ECAP with acoustic noise featured an onset effect and a decrease in the amount of masking to a steady state. It was characterized by a two-component exponential fun

Backward masking is a measure of early visual information processing usually abnormal in psychotic disorders. Previous studies of subjects with Borderline Personality Disorder have been inconsistent regarding their impairment or lack of impairment on backward masking. We examined visual backward masking performance in samples of unmedicated depressed patients with (n=12) and without (n=16) Borderline Personality Disorder, and healthy volunteers (n=18). Accuracy was poorer in depressed BPD patients, relative to both non-BPD depressed and healthy comparison subjects. As in previous studies, no d

Temporal modulation transfer functions were obtained using sinusoidal carriers for four normally hearing subjects and three subjects with mild to moderate cochlear hearing loss. Carrier frequencies were 1000, 2000 and 5000 Hz, and modulation frequencies ranged from 10 to 640 Hz in one-octave steps. The normally hearing subjects were tested using levels of 30 and 80 dB SPL. For the higher level, modulation detection thresholds varied only slightly with modulation frequency for frequencies up to 80 Hz, but decreased for high modulation frequencies. The decrease can be attributed to the detection

1. The effects of olivocochlear (OC) feedback on signal processing in the cochlea were studied by comparing responses seen with and without a contralateral noise or by comparing responses seen before and after cutting the OC bundle (OCB). Adding and subtracting a contralateral noise is a convenient, reversible way of changing the level of OC feedback; however, it fully reveals only the contribution of the contralaterally responsive efferent fibers. Cutting the OCB can reveal the full contribution of all fibers in the OCB; however, the manipulation can only be performed once per experiment. 2.

A comparison was made of the discrimination ability of different groups of hearing-impaired and normal-hearing subjects in noisy conditions. Four groups of subjects having a sensorineural hearing loss with various audiogram configurations, one group of subjects having a conductive hearing loss and one group of normal-hearing subjects were chosen. The submaster tapes were recorded in quiet and in pink noise with signal-to-noise ratios of -3, -8, and -13 dB. The test subjects heard the test words monaurally via earphones. The best speech discrimination was achieved in quiet, anechoic conditions.

Bekesy automatic audiometric findings may be affected by various factors such as contralateral masking, starting frequency, starting level, exposure to stimulating sound and different stages of some disease entity. These findings are seen mostly on steady-tone tracings as revealed by peak-to-peak amplitude reductions and threshold drifts. This paper is concerned with automatic audiometry parameters which have been little known or ignored by many investigators. Detailed audiometric case histories from 6 patients with a variety of unilateral sensorineural hearing impairments showed, e.g., that c
