Comparative Assessment of Peritoneal Membrane Characteristics in Patients on Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis Using Standard Peritoneal Equilibration Test and Fast Peritoneal Equilibration Test.

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of peritoneal membrane permeability in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) is crucial in prescribing treatment regimens. This study evaluated peritoneal membrane characteristics in patients on CAPD using standard peritoneal equilibration test (PET) and fast PET. METHODS: A prospective observational longitudinal study included patients on CAPD with no symptoms of peritonitis for at least 4 weeks before the PET. Both, standard and fast PET were performed using 2.5% glucose-containing dialysate. The dialysate and plasma (D/P) creatinine ratios at e…

VV116 exerts potent efficacy against feline infectious peritonitis.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a fatal disease in cats caused by feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV) with no officially approved antiviral therapy. In this study, we evaluated the anti-FIPV potential of VV116 and found that it potently inhibited viral replication in CRFK cells (EC50 = 1.57 μM). In experimental FIPV-infected cats, VV116 significantly reversed clinicopathological abnormalities, improved survival to 75%, and reduced viral loads in most organs to levels below or at the limit of detection, achieving a greater reduction compared to GS‑441524. Marked histopathological …

Caregiver skin infection causing peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis.

We present the first case report of peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis due to Gibellulopsis nigrescens, with the same pathogen detected in her caregiver's tinea capitis. This confirms that touch contamination from the caregiver's infection was the primary source of this rare organism. The species of pathogen causing peritonitis and her caregiver's scalp lesions were identified by DNA barcoding. The patient responded well to timely PD catheter removal and a 2-week course of systemic amphotericin B deoxycholate. Preventive strategies should prioritize hygiene practices, including ma…

Culture-Negative Peritonitis and the Latest Diagnostic Techniques.

BACKGROUND: Peritonitis is a common and serious complication of peritoneal dialysis that results in considerable morbidity, mortality, and increased healthcare costs. A positive culture-based microorganism test is one of the main criteria for the diagnosis of peritonitis. However, the rates of positive bacterial culture remain quite low. SUMMARY: Peritonitis is a frequently encountered and consequential complication of peritoneal dialysis that poses a significant clinical burden in terms of morbidity, mortality, and healthcare expenditure. The reliance on culture-positive microbiological test…

Multi-Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis Peritonitis: A Case Report.

The increasing incidence of tuberculosis raises concerns globally, impacting both developing and developed nations. Abdominal tuberculosis s … onstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS). The patient then developed ascites, and a diagnosis of TB peritonitis was made based on low serum ascites albumin gradient (SAAG) and a positive acid-fast bacillus (AFB) result in the para-aortic lymph node. Treatment complexity arose from drug resistance to isoniazid and ethambutol.

Histoplasmosis peritonitis in an immunocompetent patient: case report.

Histoplasmosis is a fungal infection most frequently seen in immunocompromised patients. It is endemic in Central and South America and in Africa. The infection is usually asymptomatic in a healthy individual. Extrapulmonary dissemination can be seen in immunocompromised hosts. Gastrointestinal manifestations frequently involve the terminal ileum and cecum, mimicking Crohn's disease or malignancy. We describe the case of a 36-year-old healthy man from Cameroon, living in Switzerland for 13 years and without any medical nor surgical history, who presented peritonitis not responding to antibioti…

A case of Neurospora sitophila causing PD peritonitis.

We describe a rare case of fungal peritoneal dialysis (PD) peritonitis caused by the ascomycete fungus Neurospora sitophila (N. sitophila). The patient had little response to initial antibiotics and PD catheter removal was necessary for source control. The fungal biomarker β-d-glucan (BDG) was positive prior to N. sitophila being cultured and remained positive for 6 months after discharge. Use of BDG early in the assessment of PD peritonitis may reduce time to definitive therapy in fungal peritonitis.

Characterizing Salmonella Typhimurium-induced Septic Peritonitis in Mice.

Sepsis is a dysregulated host immune response to microbial invasion or tissue damage, leading to organ injury at a site distant from that of the infection or damage. Currently, the widely used mice models of sepsis include lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced endotoxemia, cecal ligation and puncture (CLP), and monobacterial infection model systems. This protocol describes a method to study the host responses during Salmonella Typhimurium infection-induced septic peritonitis in mice. S. Typhimurium, a Gram-negative intracellular pathogen, causes typhoid-like disease in mice. This protocol elaborate…

Bacterial and Antibiotic Sensitivity Pattern in Secondary Peritonitis.

BACKGROUND: Peritonitis is inflammation of the peritoneum usually as a result of a localized or generalized infection. Secondary peritonitis which is the most common type follows an infective process in a visceral organ. The role of peritoneal cultures and use of antibiotics effective against culture results remain controversial. OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to determine the bacterial and antibiotic sensitivity pattern in patients with secondary peritonitis. It also compared the use of empirical antibiotics and culture-sensitive antibiotics with outcomes of patients with secondary per…

A novel mast cell-dependent allergic peritonitis model.

Typical murine models of allergic inflammation are induced by the combination of ovalbumin and aluminum hydroxide. However, accumulating evidence indicates that, in models of asthma and atopic dermatitis, allergic inflammation can be generated in the absence of aluminum hydroxide. Moreover, co-administration of Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxin B with ovalbumin can enhance inflammation. The objective of this study was to establish a rapid and mast cell-dependent murine model of allergic inflammation by inducing allergic peritonitis using ovalbumin and S. aureus enterotoxin B. Allergic peritoni…
