The primary visual pathways, in particular those to the lateral geniculate body, of 11 albino and 7 pigmented rabbits, were studied using the method of anterograde labelling with horseradish peroxidase following injection of the tracer into the vitreous body of one eye. A heavy projection to the contralateral dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus was seen in all animals. In both albino and pigmented animals a region devoid of label was present in the medial part of the alpha sector of the nucleus. Glycogen content and peroxidase activity in 101 patients with acute, chronic exacerbated cholecystitis and noncomplicated cholelithiasis were investigated. An increase of the indices was established in case of inflammatory diseases of gallbladder and biliary ducts, being parallel to the severity of the pathological process. The values were normalized with the successful treatment. No essential deviations from the normal values were found in the non-complicated cholelithiasis.

Acute myelofibrosis (AM) or malignant myelosclerosis is a myeloprofilerative syndrome in which bone marrow fibrosis is associated with a proliferation of immature myeloid cells. In four patients with typical AM, investigated by the platelet-peroxidase reaction at ultrastructural level, the blast cells were found to be megakaryoblasts. The 'antioxidant' enzymes superoxide dismutase (SD), catalase and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) were found greatly elevated in red blood cells of subjects with beta-thalassaemia minor and similar to normal values in red blood cells of subjects with beta-thalassaemia major. These findings allows us to speculate that red cells in beta-thalassaemia minor react to the increased oxidant threat with augmented antioxidant enzyme activities. The normal levels of antioxidant enzymes in beta-thalassaemia major seem to be due to the presence of normal red cells owing to multiple transfusions.

The cerebellar afferent projection from locus coeruleus has been studied in the cat by means of retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase. Labelled cells are present bilaterally in locus coeruleus only following injections in the cerebellar vermis (especially its anterior and posterior parts), the ventral paraflocculus and the flocculus. In order to identity the source of excess secretion of prolactin in male patients, the pituitary tumors of 11 males with hyperprolactinaemia were studied by peroxidase-labelled antibody method using antibodies against human prolactin. In this study we compared horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-labeled rabbit antihuman immunoglobulin G (IgG) conjugates, prepared by a one-step and a two-step method. Glutaraldehyde was used as a cross-linking agent. Two methods were used for removing unconjugated HRP: Sephadex G-200 gel chromatography and ammonium sulfate precipitation. The peroxidase and estradiol-metabolizing activities of mammary tumors induced by 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene were determined in fresh and stored tissue. In both cases, a wide variation in peroxidase activity was observed in 47 different tumors tested. The properties of the enzyme found in the tumors were similar to those of lactoperoxidase. It is suggested that the amount of peroxidase present might reflect the ability of tumor cells to differentiate in response to hormonal stimulation and be indicative of the degree of tumor progression.
