Patients with hydatid disease of the liver were found to have disorders of lipid metabolism in the liver which led to increase in the amount of lipid peroxidation products and simultaneous decrease of blood serum antioxidant activity. An operation sharply induces the noted disturbances of lipid metabolism. A single administration of 1 ml of 10% alpha tocopherol solution in the preoperative period has a beneficial effect on the above-noted shifts.

The article addresses the issue of comparative efficacy of those drug preparations having hepatoprotective action (hepatofalk, ursofalk, lipin, lavalon) by parameters characterizing lipid peroxidation (LPO). The above drug preparations enhance resistance of brush membranes, lower LPO processes. It was hepatofalk and lipin that had the most pronounced positive effect on LPO processes in patients with chronic toxic and postviral hepatitis.

We present a 63-year-old man who developed multiple brain infarction after ingesting a 35% hydrogen peroxide solution. Neurologic examination revealed left hemiparesis, primarily affecting the lower limb, and mild weakness of the right lower limb. Gadolinium-enhanced MRI revealed patchy bilateral brain lesions. Oxygen gas embolization is the likely cause of the brain infarctions.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of nitric oxide (NO) on H2O2-mediated endothelial permeability. H2O2 (0.1 mM) increased permeability at 90 min to 298% of baseline. Spermine NONOate (SNO), an NO donor, at 0.1 or 1 mM did not alter permeability. However, 0.1 mM H2O2 + 1 mM SNO increased permeability to 764%, twice that of 0.1 mM H2O2 alone. The effects of iron-induced lipid peroxidation and of lactic acidosis on [3H]choline uptake were investigated on crude synaptosomes prepared from rat cerebral cortices. Effects of anesthetics on thyroidal hydrogen peroxide generating system was studied using porcine thyroid follicles.
