PFAS are a group of persistent organic pollutants, that bioaccumulate and are associated with negative health effects. Reviews have suggested that the most critical effects of PFAS are on the immune system, but little is known of effects on development of autoimmunity. Our objective was to map and summarize available evidence concerning exposure to any PFAS and development/presence of autoimmunity, in humans and animals. We assessed studies reporting potential associations between PFAS exposure and autoimmune disease and/or autoantibodies. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, CENTRAL, Scopus, and Web …

Green mussels, a popular seafood in Jakarta, have been found to be contaminated with microplastics. Microplastics are hydrophobic, they can adsorb various pollutants, such as metals and persistent organic compounds, onto their surface, thereby increasing the potential for biomagnification through the trophic chain. Microplastic contamination in mussels is a growing concern and may pose health risks to consumers. This research aims to characterize the types of polymers, shape colors, abundance of microplastic, detect heavy metal contaminants on microplastic surfaces in the gills, and estimate t

Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAHs) are persistent organic pollutants of environmental concern due to their potential impacts on food chain, with plants being particularly vulnerable. While plants can uptake, transport, and transform PAHs, the precise mechanisms underlying their localization and degradation are not fully understood. Here, a cultivation experiment conducted with Panicum miliaceum exposed different concentrations of phenanthrene (PHE). Intermediate PHE degradation compounds were identified via GC-MS analysis, leading to the proposal of a phytodegradation pathway featuring three…

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are persistent organic pollutants, of which BDE-47 could be activated by human cytochrome P450s (CYPs) for chromosome-damaging effects. However, the metabolic activation and mutagenicity of other PBDEs remain unknown. In this study, 14 representative PBDEs were analyzed by molecular docking as potential substrates for several human CYPs. The results showed negative free energies for each pair of binding, however, different CYPs demonstrated largely varied frequencies of binding conformations favoring a substrate potential: CYP2E1, 3A4, and 2B6 being suita…

The overall prevalence of metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes (T2D) and associated co-morbidities have increased at an alarming rate in the United States and worldwide. There is a growing body of epidemiological evidence implicating exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including legacy organochlorine (OC) pesticides and their bioaccumulative metabolites, in the pathogenesis of metabolic diseases. Therefore, the goal of the present study was to determine if exposure to trans-nonachlor, a bioaccumulative OC pesticide contaminant, in concert with high fat diet intake induced m…

In recent decades, a global concern associated with environmental chemical contamination has emerged as an important risk factor for the development of human diseases. Risk assessment methods based on animal approaches have shown to be very useful as early warning systems. However, questions, knowledge gaps, and limitations still need to be addressed in animals close to humans, such as dogs. The objective of this study was to analyze citation patterns, impact of publications, and most relevant authors, countries, institutional affiliations, and lines of research on environmental chemical conta

Exposure to high fat diet (HFD) and persistent organic pollutants including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is associated with liver injury in human populations and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and steatohepatitis (NASH) in animal models. Previously, exposure of HFD-fed male mice to the non-dioxin-like (NDL) PCB mixture Aroclor1260, dioxin-like (DL) PCB126, or Aroclor1260 + PCB126 co-exposure caused toxicant-associated steatohepatitis (TASH) and differentially altered the liver proteome. Here unbiased mRNA and miRNA sequencing (mRNA- and miRNA- seq) was used to identify biologica…

The excessive and unorganised utilisation of pesticides have posed negative impacts on soil and water at higher levels. Pesticides are a major class of persistent organic compounds with high resistance to natural biodegradation and enhanced tendency to bio accumulate. The severe health hazards imposed on the living organisms hinder the ecosystem and lead to chronic and irreversible health issues. Photocatalytic method is reported as a potential alternative with a variety of techniques and materials that are safer, easier, durable, cost-effective and efficient. Nanomaterials play a key role in

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of persistent organic pollutants of water, and their determination at trace levels in the aquatic ecosystems is essential. In this work, an ultrasound-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) procedure was suggested utilizing a binary dispersive agent for recovery of different molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from waters. The detection was carried out by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) as well as high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence and diode-array detection (HPLC-FD/PD…

Phthalates (PAEs) are widespread persistent organic pollutants and endocrine disruptors. However, the associations between PAE exposure and the risk of miscarriage in humans are unclear, and an insufficient number of studies have evaluated the possible threshold or dose-dependent effects of first trimester PAE exposure on miscarriage risk. Our research measured the levels of mono-methyl phthalate (MMP), mono-ethyl phthalate, mono-isobutyl phthalate, MiBP mono-butyl phthalate (MBP), mono-octyl phthalate, mono-benzyl phthalate, mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, mono(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate, an…

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and are associated with thyroid diseases. Our previous study reported that 2,3',4,4',5-Pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB118) could induce thyroid dysfunction and the rat thyroid tissues exhibit abnormal mitochondrial ultrastructure. However, the more specific effects of PCB118 on mitochondria and the relationship between mitochondria and thyroid dysfunction remain unclear. In this study, Wistar rats were injected with PCB118 intraperitoneally at 0, 10, 100, and 1000 μg/kg/d for 13 weeks and FRTL-5 rat thyroid cells were treated w…

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent organic pollutants associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Previously, we demonstrated that the PCB mixture, Aroclor1260, exacerbated NAFLD, reflective of toxicant-associated steatohepatitis, in diet-induced obese mice, in part through pregnane-xenobiotic receptor (PXR) and constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) activation. Recent studies have also reported PCB-induced changes in the gut microbiome that consequently impact NAFLD. Therefore, the objective of this study is to examine PCB effects on the gut-liver axis and characte…

BACKGROUND: Dioxins are persistent organic pollutants present in the environment. They exert their biological effects by binding to an intracellular receptor, the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). Activation of AhR leads to the induction of cytochrome p450 1A1 (CYP1A1). Expression of CYP1A1 in human skin is a key marker for AhR activation, and it may induce comedogenesis resulting in acne-like lesions known as chloracne/metabolising acquired dioxin-induced skin hamartomas (MADISH). The contribution of this pathway in patients seen in a busy acne clinic is unknown.

Information on carry-over of contaminants from feed to animal food products is essential for appropriate human risk assessment of feed contaminants. The carry-over of potentially hazardous persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from feed to fillet was assessed in consumption sized Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Relative carry-over (defined as the fraction of a certain dietary POP retained in the fillet) was assessed in a controlled feeding trial, which provided fillet retention of dietary organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), dioxins (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and brominated flame …

Thyroid hormones, which influence body metabolism and development, could be affected by persistent organic pollutants. We sought to examine the relationship between polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and thyroid disease. We employed incidence density sampling to perform a nested case control analysis of the Michigan Long-Term PBB Cohort. Cohort members (n=3333) were exposed to PBBs through contaminated cattle feed in 1973-1974 and to PCBs through daily life. Those with detectable serum PBB and PCB concentrations at enrollment were categorized into tertiles of …
