Personality disorders in idiopathic generalized epilepsies in adults.

INTRODUCTION: Adults with idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) exhibit higher rates of psychiatric symptoms and poorer social outcomes. Here, we studied the inter-relationships of epilepsy, psychiatric diagnoses/symptoms, and social outcomes to understand their psychosocial challenges. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study consisted of a cross-sectional cohort study on IGE patients identified at the Epilepsy Clinic at the Odense University Hospital and a case-control study using Danish registers. In the cross-sectional study, patients answered validated screening tools for personality disorder (P…

Personality disorders in people with epilepsy: a review.

Epileptologists and psychiatrists have long observed a correlation between epilepsy and personality disorders (PDs) in their clinical practice. We conducted a comprehensive PubMed search looking for evidence on PDs in people with epilepsy (PwE). Out of over 600 results obtained without applying any time restriction, we selected only relevant studies (both analytical and descriptive) limited to English, Italian, French and Spanish languages, with a specific focus on PDs, rather than traits or symptoms, thus narrowing our search down to 23 eligible studies. PDs have been investigated in focal ep…

Clinical Staging for Personality Disorders in Older Adults.

OBJECTIVE: This scientific research aimed to investigate the feasibility of implementing a clinical staging (CS) model for personality disorders (PDs) in older adults. The CS model could provide valuable insights into the life course of personality pathology, prognosis, and treatment decisions for PDs in older adults. METHODS/DESIGN: The study employed an international Delphi methodology with three rounds and involved 21 experts. RESULTS: Consensus was achieved on 12 out of 17 statements, confirming the viability of a CS model for PDs in older adults. The proposed model incorporates the Alte…

The interface of autism and (borderline) personality disorder.

Prominent clinical perspectives posit that the interface of autism and (borderline) personality disorder manifests as either a misdiagnosis of the former as the latter or a comorbidity of both. In this editorial, we integrate these disparate viewpoints by arguing that personality difficulties are inherent to the autistic spectrum.

Case Studies on Dissocial Personality-Bad or Ill?

Dissocial personality is understood as a personality that does not ideologize most social norms and is characterized by a lack of empathy. Precise criteria for diagnosing dissocial personality are included in the ICD-10 classification, which is still in force in Poland. This classification is widely available in both Polish and English. In Poland, there is a fairly wide range of assistance available for people with personality disorders in day care units and 24-h wards for the treatment of personality disorders. Unfortunately, due to some antisocial behaviors that violate the criminal law in f…

Betrayal Trauma and Personality Pathology: An Integrated Review.

Personality pathology is a common and debilitating problem for many, and among the factors associated with personality pathology is trauma. Recent research on the association between personality pathology and trauma has highlighted the role of trauma perpetrated by a person whom the victim trusts and/or relies upon for support (i.e., betrayal trauma). There is an increasing number of studies on the association between betrayal trauma and a range of different forms of personality pathology, although neither these studies nor the more general bodies of the literature on which they draw (i.e., in…

Testosterone, gender identity and gender-stereotyped personality attributes.

Sex/gender differences in personality associated with gender stereotyped behavior are widely studied in psychology yet remain a subject of ongoing debate. Exposure to testosterone during developmental periods is considered to be a primary mediator of many sex/gender differences in behavior. Extensions of this research has led to both lay beliefs and initial research about individual differences in basal testosterone in adulthood relating to "masculine" personality. In this study, we explored the relationships between testosterone, gender identity, and gender stereotyped personality attributes …

Actual and volitional personality change across study abroad.

OBJECTIVES: According to personality development theories, the dramatic environmental transition of study abroad may form a crucible for personality change. Location, social roles, and cultural familiarity suddenly shift, potentially disrupting old habits and creating new ones, building upon the typical maturation occurring during college age. The current study poses questions about selection and socialization effects of study abroad on personality, actual and volitional change in personality, and whether adjustment to study abroad catalyzes change. METHOD: Longitudinal studies were conducted…

Exploring the predictive validity of personality disorder criteria.

We tested the predictive validity of personality disorder (PD) indicators at different levels of aggregation, ranging from general PD severity to PD syndrome scales to individual PD criteria. We compared the predictive validity of models on these levels based on interview data on all 78 DSM-IV PD criteria, by using 19 outcome scales in three different samples (N = 651, N = 552, and N = 1,277). We hypothesized that criteria of personality pathology yield a significant increase in predictive validity compared with scales that are aggregated at the syndrome- or general severity-level. We assessed…

Assessment of response bias in personality disorder research.

Most research on personality disorders (PDs) relies upon self-reported information, commonly collected via standardized self-report inventories or structured interviews. Such data might, for instance, be culled from archival records from applied evaluative contexts or collected as part of dedicated anonymized research studies. Many factors-such as disengagement, distractibility, or motivation to appear in a certain manner-may influence whether self-reported information accurately reflects an examinee's genuine personality characteristics. Despite resultant risks to the validity of collected da…

Dimensional models of personality disorders: Challenges and opportunities.

Categorical models of personality disorders have been beneficial throughout psychiatric history, providing a mechanism for organizing and communicating research and treatment. However, the view that individuals with personality disorders are qualitatively distinct from the general population is no longer tenable. This perspective has amassed steady criticism, ranging from inconsequential to irreconcilable. In response, stronger evidence has been accumulated in support of a dimensional perspective that unifies normal and pathological personality on underlying trait continua. Contemporary nosolo…

Suicide Risk in Personality Disorders: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This systematic review aimed to distil recent literature investigating psychosocial factors which may account for the association between personality disorder (PD) and suicide attempt or suicide death. RECENT FINDINGS: Suicide risk is particularly elevated in people with PD compared to those with no, or many other, mental health diagnoses. Despite this, suicide prevention strategies for PD populations have not progressed markedly in recent years. It is critical, therefore, to identify additional factors associated with suicide in PD populations. Of the 34 studies included i…

Recognizing and Responding to Patients with Personality Disorders.

Caring for patients with personality disorders and traits presents unique challenges for physicians and other providers. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, recognizes 10 personality disorders, which are organized into 3 clusters (A, B, and C) based on shared diagnostic features. Personality disorders or traits create difficulty in clinical and interpersonal interactions, promoting missed diagnosis or underdiagnosis, nonadherence to medical recommendations, or other dangerous outcomes. It is important to recognize patients with potential personality disord…

Correlates of Homelessness Among Adults with Personality Disorder.

Although personality disorders (PDs) are more common among persons experiencing homelessness than the general population, few studies have investigated the risk of experiencing homelessness among persons with PDs. This study seeks to identify the demographic, socioeconomic, and behavioral health correlates of past-year homelessness among persons with antisocial, borderline, and schizotypal PDs. Nationally representative data of the civilian, noninstitutionalized population of the United States was used to identify correlates of homelessness. Descriptive statistics and bivariate associations be…
