The personality of deaf people was studied within the framework of the Eysenck concept of personality. Data gathered with the Personality Inventory AUPI could be evaluated in 66 deaf people (43 connatal or early acquired deafness, 25 late deafness, i.e. after full language development). The consistency of the AUPI Scales in the normal population about corresponds to that in the deaf people. -- Those who went deaf "early" showed a statistically significant higher degree of extraversion than the normal population. There was no significant difference in neuroticism (emotional lability). "Early" d

OBJECTIVE: The classification of anorexia nervosa (AN) into subtypes is relevant due to their different symptomatology. However, subtypes (restricting type: AN-R; purging type: AN-P) differ also in terms of their personality functioning. Knowledge about these differences would allow for better treatment stratification. A pilot study indicated differences in structural abilities that can be assessed by the operationalized psychodynamic diagnosis (OPD) system. The aim of this study was therefore to systematically explore differences in personality functioning and personality between the two AN s

Although the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder has reasonable interrater and test-retest reliability, its discriminative validity is poor. The authors review studies indicating that the patient group subsumed by the borderline category actually includes those with various affective, organic, and schizotypal disorders. They speculate that borderline personality disorder represents a broad range of affective disorders resulting in part from childhood object loss, which may impair the reinforcement mechanisms necessary for the development of competent object relations.

With the aid of clinical scales and eventual components, regressive and discriminant analysis the author elaborated a system of prognostical indices for the assessment of unfavourable outcomes and formation of pathological personality development as well as in patients with reactive conditions in the form of depressions, neurasthenia and hysterical neurosis. Observations which amounted to the mark equal to or exceeding the critical (68) should be considered as dangerous in relation to a formation of a pathological personality.

BACKGROUND: Personality traits are one of the major factors influencing the behavior and functioning of an individual, and they play a crucial role in the development of psychosomatic disorders and diseases. This paper aimed to evaluate the importance of personality traits in temporomandibular disorder (TMDs) development using the NEO-FFI Personality Inventory by Paul Costa and Robert McCrae (the Five-Factor Model of Personality, known as the Big Five). Moreover, the relationship between personality type and the intensity of dysfunctional changes in the stomatognathic system was assessed using

Personality is a strong determinant for several health-related behaviours and has been linked to the development of cardiovascular diseases. However, the reports of personality's mediating role have been inconsistent with no data available from large population-based cohorts. The study aimed to create proxies for the Big Five personality traits, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness and neuroticism, to examine the longitudinal relationship between personality and myocardial infarction in the UK Biobank. The study sample comprised of 484,205 participants (55% female, 45% male

OBJECTIVES: This article aims to examine the contribution of the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) in relation to social exclusion and substance use. Indeed, numerous studies converge in highlighting a higher prevalence of personality disorders and substance use among homeless individuals. Since its publication in 2013 the DSM-5 has proposed an Alternative Model for Personality Disorders, allowing for an assessment of personality based on two criteria: the level of personality functioning (Criterion A) and pathological personality traits (Criterion B). The tools developed for

Previous research suggests that, as a group, people who believe in the paranormal tend to have a history of traumatic events in childhood. This relationship has been incorporated into Irwin's 1993 model of the psychological origins and functions of paranormal belief. A constructive replication of the relationship and a test of Irwin's model was undertaken in relation to a specific context, namely, a childhood spent with an alcoholic parent. Compared to 89 control participants, a sample of 32 adults who were children of alcoholics had stronger beliefs in witchcraft, superstitions, and precognit

BACKGROUND: Personality disorder is a severe health issue. However, the epidemiology of personality disorders is insufficiently described and surveys report very heterogeneous rates.AimsWe aimed to conduct a meta-analysis on the prevalence of personality disorders in adult populations and examine potential moderators that affect heterogeneity.
METHOD: We searched PsycINFO, PSYNDEX and Medline for studies that used standardised diagnostics (DSM-IV/-5, ICD-10) to report prevalence rates of personality disorders in community populations in Western countries. Prevalence rates were extracted and a

The present investigation assessed the relationship between Type A behavior and blood pressure variability in a sample of 211 adolescents. Consistent with the adult literature, analyses revealed an association between Type A behavior and both systolic blood pressure variability and peak systolic pressure. The measures of diastolic blood pressure, however, were unrelated to Pattern A. The association with systolic variability remained when controlling for initial blood pressure level, sex, weight, and age. Subsidiary analyses of the components of Pattern A showed that high systolic variability

Hypochondriacal and hysteroid personalities are considered the extreme variants of defined emotional and motivational dimensions. The hysteroid personality is mainly characterized by a strong need for social attention and respect as well as by a lack of emotional genuiness. For the diagnosis of hypochondriacal and hysteroid personality tendencies, a Hypochondria-Hysteria Inventory was developed and employed in 13 different samples with a total of 1206 persons. The index scores of the individual degrees of hypochondriacal and hysteroid tendencies were demonstrated to be of sufficient reliabilit

To evaluate the development of Type A-like behavior in children, responses to the Hunter-Wolf Instrument were studied in 2128 children in Bogalusa, Louisiana, a biracial community. Test-retest reliability measures were generated by retesting a random subsample of 387 children 2 weeks after the initial testing. Norms were tabulated for each of the age, race, and sex groups. Increases in total and subscale scores with age were noted except for the Hostility subscale, which decreased dramatically in the older groups. White males had higher average scores during the entire period than other groups

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a pervasive personality disorder that poses a burden for affected individuals, their family members and society as a whole. Current research suggests that early childhood abuse, including emotional abuse, may be an important predictor of later BPD symptomology. Further, an emerging body of literature suggests that anxiety sensitivity (AS) may serve as a form of emotional vulnerability and be a key variable in the relation between abuse and the development of BPD symptomatology. This literature has relied on retrospective recall of abuse and AS in adult

Depression is a common mental health problem that imposes a significant burden on both individuals and society. Numerous studies have shown that childhood abuse has a long-lasting detrimental effect on mental health, including the development of depression. This study reviews recent studies on the association between childhood abuse and depression, highlighting the robust causal link between childhood abuse and subsequent depression. The strength of this association varies depending on the type of abuse, with emotional abuse showing a particularly strong connection to depression. In addition,

The historical review of "psychiatric personality disorders" reveals the lack of convergence of those disorders with the organic personality disorder (OPD). Only the psychopathy concept has been used as a psychopathological phenotype for one of the groups of OPD, the so-called "pseudopsychopaths". These patients have been described from the beginning of the XXth century under the heading of "frontal lobe syndrome". It was only with the development of the psychiatric nosologies, towards the middle of the XXth century, that the term "organic personality disorder" started to be used. The accumula

BACKGROUND: Adolescence and early adulthood are periods of increased vulnerability for psychiatric disorders, when trauma and personality development converge on shared and distinct, often unknown, brain signatures.
METHODS: We used sparse partial least squares (SPLS) to identify multivariate signatures between voxelwise gray matter volume (GMV) and the following 3 domains: childhood trauma, personality, and depressivity. We performed structural equation modeling (SEM) among these domains, predicted functional outcome at 9-month follow-up via support vector machine classification, and correla…

OBJECTIVES: Work is an important developmental context in adulthood, yet little is known about how it contributes to personality trajectories in midlife. The present study examines how subjectively perceived work environment (autonomy, innovation, social integration, stress) and objectively measured work activities (activities related to information and people, physical/manual activities) are related to levels of Big Five personality traits at age 44 and to change over 20 years.
METHODS: We analyzed four-wave longitudinal data from N = 374 participants (born 1950-1952; Mage T1 = 44 years, SD
