Sex hormone levels, genetic androgen receptor polymorphism, and anxiety in ≥50-year-old males.

INTRODUCTION: While associations between somatic changes and sex hormone levels in aging men have been explored in many studies, the association of testosterone and estradiol with psychic symptoms other than depression and the role of the genetically determined CAG repeat (CAGn) polymorphism of the androgen receptor (AR) have received much less attention. AIM: The purpose of this article is to investigate the associations between general anxiety, phobic anxiety and panic with sex hormone levels and the genetic androgen receptor polymorphism in aging males. METHODS: This cross-sectional study

Oral health and its influence on cognitive behavioral therapy in patients fulfilling the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV criteria for intra-oral injection phobia.

OBJECTIVE: To describe self-perceived and clinically assessed oral health and oral treatment needs among intra-oral injection-phobic patients (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV) and to explore whether these factors have an impact on the outcome of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty-five patients (43 women, mean age 32.5 years, range 18-62 years) were treated with short-duration CBT. Dental anxiety (Dental Anxiety Scale and Dental Fear Survey) and self-perceived oral health were assessed by means of questionnaires. Three dentists assessed ora

Long-term course and relapses of vestibular and balance disorders.

The long-term course and the frequency of relapses for various peripheral vestibular disorders and somatoform phobic postural vertigo are discussed with respect to the clinically most important questions for thus afflicted patients. This review is mainly based on our own long-term follow-up studies and takes into consideration the most relevant literature. The following syndromes are discussed in detail. Vestibular neuritis: the recovery rate of peripheral vestibular function lies between 40-63% depending on early-onset treatment with corticosteroids; the recurrence rate within 10 years is 2%.

Pharmacotherapy of social anxiety disorder at the turn of the millennium.

Over the past 21 years since the birth of SP into the diagnostic nomenclature, there have been significant gains in knowledge about effective pharmacologic and psychotherapeutic treatments. The SSRIs have emerged as the first-line pharmacologic treatment, although good evidence shows efficacy of benzodiazepines; MAOIs; and anticonvulsant agents, such as gabapentin and pregabalin. There is also emerging evidence about the efficacy of the novel antidepressant venlafaxine and also optimism for the potential utility of nefazodone and possibly bupropion. However, there are many areas requiring furt

Better Communication With the Public: Understanding Science Phobia and Mistrust as Neurobiological Phenomena.

Much has been written recently about science mistrust and illiteracy and consequent phobia of recommendations and interventions that have grown out of that science. Both reinforcing and reversing these phenomena depend on strategies aimed at brain networks that generate them. The neurogenesis of specific phobias involves a network that includes the amygdala and the hypothalamus and their connection through the stria terminalis. Decreased GABAergic inhibition of this circuit results in limbic activation and induction of fear pathways. The neurogenesis of mistrust involves suppression of a netwo

The role of fear of evaluation in group perception.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is associated with interpersonal impairment. One possible reason for this dysfunction is that people with SAD evaluate others differently on dimensions of warmth and dominance compared to individuals without the disorder. In the current study, we examined whether two core constructs of SAD, fear of negative evaluation and fear of positive evaluation, affect the judgments that people make about groups based on warmth and dominance. We also investigated whether racial similarity (i.e., whether someone is the same race as those they're interacting with) and ethnic id

Who Wants to (Digitally) Live Forever? The Connections That Narcissism Has with Motives for Digital Immortality and the Desire for Digital Avatars.

We examined the role that death anxiety (for self and others) and motivation for digital immortality played in the associations that narcissistic personality traits had with the desire for digital avatars (of self and others) in a sample of Israeli community members (N = 1041). We distinguished between four forms of narcissism: extraverted narcissism (characterized by assertive self-enhancement), antagonistic narcissism (characterized by defensiveness and hostility), neurotic narcissism (characterized by emotional distress), and communal narcissism (characterized by attempts to emphasize super

Touchscreen-based approach-avoidance responses to appetitive and threatening stimuli.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Individuals are thought to be biased towards approaching positive stimuli and avoiding negative stimuli. Yet, it is unclear whether this general pattern applies to all stimulus classes or whether biases are more specific. We expected significant approach biases towards two types of positive stimuli, appetitive foods and butterflies; and avoidance biases away from two types of negative stimuli, spoiled foods and spiders. METHODS: A touchscreen-based Approach-Avoidance Task (AAT), using hand gestures toward or away from stimuli assessed biases. Questionnaires and imag

Evaluating the 'skin disease-avoidance' and 'dangerous animal' frameworks for understanding trypophobia.

ABSTRACTTrypophobia refers to the extreme negative reaction when viewing clusters of circular objects. Two major evolutionary frameworks have been proposed to account for trypophobic visual discomfort. The skin disease-avoidance (SD) framework proposes that trypophobia is an over-generalised response to stimuli resembling pathogen-related skin diseases. The dangerous animal (DA) framework posits that some dangerous organisms and trypophobic stimuli share similar visual characteristics. Here, we performed the first experimental manipulations which directly compare these two frameworks by superi

The role of fear in hierarchical processing of fear-related stimuli.

According to a widely accepted definition, visual objects are composed of hierarchical structures classified as either global or local, depending on their location in the hierarchy. Previous research has demonstrated that fear and anxiety are associated with faster identification of local level stimuli, supporting the popular view that fear narrows attention. Nevertheless, the modulating role of fear in hierarchical processing has never been examined for stimuli that are personally relevant. To fill this research gap, we used emotional modification of a global-local paradigm to examine hierarc

Efficacy and acceptability of different interventions for acrophobia: A network meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Currently, different psychological interventions have shown significant efficacy in the treatment of acrophobia. However, the superiority of these individual treatments remains unclear. This network meta-analysis (NMA) aimed to investigate the efficacy, acceptability, and superiority of different existing interventions for acrophobia. METHODS: We conducted a NMA of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and compared the efficacy, acceptability, and superiority of different existing interventions for acrophobia. RESULTS: In total, 17 RCTs (946 participants) were included in this stud

Systematic review finds that fever phobia is a worldwide issue among caregivers and healthcare providers.

AIM: Fever phobia describes exaggerated concerns about the consequences of childhood fever and broader awareness is needed in everyday clinical practice. We investigated the factors associated with fever phobia in caregivers and healthcare providers and the geographical distribution of the issue. METHODS: The National Library of Medicine, Excerpta Medica and Google Scholar databases were searched. RESULTS: We retrieved 76 papers, published in English from 1985 to 2018, which covered wide areas of Asia, Europe, America, Africa and Australia. The occurrence of fever phobia was confirmed in 65

Morita therapy for the treatment of emetophobia: A case report.

Until recently, the treatments for emetophobia (the fear of vomiting) have not been well studied. In Japan, Morita therapy is a known, excellent treatment option for emetophobia, but to our knowledge, there is currently no case report of Morita therapy for the treatment of emetophobia in English. Here, we present a case of emetophobia that was treated with Morita therapy and discuss its effectiveness and characteristics.

INTERVENTION PROGRAM FOR NURSING STAFF REGARDING APPROACH TO A PATIENT WITH SPIDER PHOBIA AND/OR BITE.

Spider bites are uncommon medical events, since there are limited number of spiders world-wide with fangs strong enough to pierce human skin, and most spiders bite humans only as a final defense when being crushed between skin and another object. Thus, most lesions attributed to spider bites are caused by some other etiology. The spiders that can cause medically significant bites include widow and false widow spiders (worldwide), recluse spiders (mostly North and South America), Australian funnel web spiders (eastern coastal Australia) and Phoneutria spiders (Brazil). Acute spider bites most c
