Phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA), calcium ionophore A23187 and platelet activating factor (PAF) stimulated the generation of oxygen free radicals (nitro-blue tetrazolium reduction) in Ehrlich ascites tumour (EAT) cells. The effect of endothelin-1 (ET-1) on the basilar arteries from control and subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) dogs were examined. The maximal contraction of the basilar artery in response to ET-1 was markedly decreased in the SAH group. Membrane-bound protein kinase C of rat submandibular gland was characterized and the cytosolic kinase C of the tissue was partially purified. A case of chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) in a 32-year-old female with two episodes of opportunistic infections is described. At the age of 29 the patient was suspected to be a carrier of X-linked CGD on the basis of discoid lupus erythematosus-like skin lesions. No respiratory burst activity, as measured by phorbol myristate acetate stimulated superoxide production, was observed in isolated neutrophils of the patient.
