Survival away from sheep and alternative methods of transmission of sheep lice (Bovicola ovis).

Transmission of sheep lice is thought to occur mainly by sheep to sheep contact although the possibility of other sources of infestation is often suggested. This study investigated the period of survival of Bovicola ovis after removal from sheep under varying conditions and assessed the likelihood of new infestations arising from contaminated facilities, wool caught on fences and shearers' footwear. In laboratory studies with lice held away from sheep at 4, 20, 25 and 36.5 degrees C, adults and nymphs survived longest at 25 degrees C (LT90 of 11.7 and 24.1 days for adults and large nymphs, res

Efficacy of a pour-on formulation of doramectin against lice, mites, and grubs of cattle.

OBJECTIVE: To determine effectiveness of a pour-on formulation of doramectin against Damalinia bovis, Haematopinus eurysternus, Linognathus vituli, Solenopotes capillatus, Chorioptes bovis, Sarcoptes scabiei, Hypoderma bovis, and Hypoderma lineatum. ANIMALS: Cattle of various ages with naturally acquired or artificial infestations with 1 or more species of lice, mites, or grubs. PROCEDURE: In 10 louse and 6 mite studies, cattle were treated with doramectin (500 microg/kg, topically) on day 0, and parasite counts were performed approximately weekly from days 0 to 35. In 6 grub studies, cattle

Genital Mycoplasma, Shigellosis, Zika, Pubic Lice, and Other Sexually Transmitted Infections: Neither Gone Nor Forgotten.

Most estimates of the combined burden and cost of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States have focused on 8 common STIs with established national surveillance strategies (chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, trichomoniasis, genital herpes, human papillomavirus, and sexually transmitted human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis B). However, over 30 STIs are primarily sexually transmitted or sexually transmissible. In this article, we review what is known about the burden of "other STIs" in the United States, including those where sexual transmission is not the primary transmissi

Forest edges affect ectoparasite infestation patterns of small mammalian hosts in fragmented forests in Madagascar.

Habitat loss and fragmentation drive the worldwide depletion of biodiversity. Although it is known that anthropogenic disturbances severely affect host and ecosystem integrity, effects on parasites are largely understudied. This study aims to investigate if and how habitat fragmentation affects the composition of ectoparasite communities on small mammalian hosts in two networks of dry deciduous forest fragments in northwestern Madagascar. Forest sites differing in size, proportion of edge habitat and host density were studied in the Ankarafantsika National Park and in the Mariarano region. A t

Demographic correlates of sexual size dimorphism and male genital size in the lice Philopterus coarctatus.

Sexual selection is an influential agent of evolution, often shaping the sex ratio, sexual size dimorphism (SSD), and genital size in animals. To explore its effects in ectoparasites, we quantified SSD and male genital size in relation to intensity and sex ratio across subpopulations of Philopterus coarctatus, a philopterid louse of the great grey shrike. SSD was calculated separately for the width and length of the head and abdomen. Presuming that sexual selection affects the evolution of avian lice, we would expect that infestation intensities should covary with sex ratio, relative male size

Insect bites and stings.

This article summarizes the clinical presentation and treatment of common bites and infestations in the United States. A survey of this complex and interesting area of medicine should help the emergency physician to diagnose and treat many patients who present with "nonspecific" bites and rashes.

Experimental louse-borne relapsing fever in the grivet monkey, Cercopithecus aethiops. I. Clinical course.

Fifteen grivet monkeys, Cercopithecus aethiops, were infected with an Ethiopian strain of Borrelia recurrentis, the causative agent of louse-borne relapsing fever. An initial spirochetemia occurred in all. Inactivity, fever, and leukocytosis accompanied the infections. Eight of the monkeys experienced 1 relapse and 1 monkey had 2 relapses. The relapses tended to be less severe than the initial infections. The only deaths, however, occurred in 2 of the 3 monkeys with severe relapses. The clinical course of the experimental infection in grivet monkeys closely resembles that of natural infections

Persistent efficacy of doramectin topical solution against induced infestations of Bovicola bovis and Solenopotes capillatus.

A study was conducted in two locations, Wyoming and Wisconsin, USA, to evaluate the persistent efficacy of doramectin topical solution at a dose rate of 500 microg/kg body weight against artificially induced infestations of Bovicola bovis and Solenopotes capillatus on cattle. At each location, lice-free beef calves were individually housed and randomly allocated to treatment. Both B. bovis and S. capillatus were transferred from untreated donor animals to doramectin-treated cattle at the end of 35, 63, 91 or 126 day post-treatment periods. Cattle treated with a saline pour-on served as the con

Diversity of ectoparasites in sheep flocks in São Paulo, Brazil.

The occurrence of ectoparasites in sheep flocks is frequently reported but seldom quantified. Sheep production used to be a predominantly family activity in the state of São Paulo (Brazil), but it began to become a commercial activity in the past decade. Thus, information about the ectoparasites existing in sheep flocks has become necessary. The present data were obtained by means of questionnaires sent to all sheep breeders belonging to the 'Associação Paulista de Criadores de Ovinos' (ASPACO; São Paulo State Association of Sheep Breeders). Response reliability was tested by means of random v

Variable major lipoprotein is a principal TNF-inducing factor of louse-borne relapsing fever.

Massive release of tumor necrosis factor is responsible for the potentially fatal larisch-Herxheimer reaction that follows antibiotic treatment of relapsing fever due to Borrelia recurrentis. We have undertaken the quantitative purification of the components of B. recurrentis that stimulate human monocytes to produce tumor necrosis factor. We show that the predominant factor inducing tumor necrosis factor is a variable lipoprotein homologous to the variable major protein of B. hermsii. We found antibodies to different forms of variable major protein in two patients with louse-borne relapsing f

Epidemic of louse-borne relapsing fever in Ethiopia.

During summer 1991 an outbreak of louse-borne relapsing fever occurred simultaneously in two transit camps established for prisoners of war being returned from Eritrea at the end of the Ethiopian civil war. Only antibiotic treatment was given at the Bahr Dar camp where the frequency of cases increased for 20 days. Vector control by delousing in addition to antibiotics was given at Mekele camp where the frequency of cases fell over a similar period. This difference was significant (p < 0.001). Furthermore, there was a significant correlation between the decreasing proportion of camp inhabitants

Experimental louse-borne relapsing fever in the grivet monkey, Cercopithecus aethiops. III. Crisis following therapy.

Eight grivet monkeys infected with Borrelia recurrentis received tetracycline (12.5mg/kg body weight) on the 3rd or 4th day of spirochetemia. Leukopenia, fever, hyperpnea, and tachycardia developed within 2 hours as spirochete counts fell to undetectable levels. These events closely simulated the crisis in human louse-borne relapsing fever in both timing and extent.
