Regulating Obsessive-Like Thoughts: Comparison of Two Forms of Affective Labeling with Exposure Only in Participants with High Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: A growing body of research has shown that mere expression of affective words (affect labeling) can help dampen emotional responses, as reflected by these words. Previous studies revealed that affect labeling can reduce physiological anxiety responses of subjects suffering from anxiety disorders. In addition, multiple studies have shown that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) individuals have difficulty understanding their own emotions. However, the effect of affect labeling is unknown for people with high- OC symptoms. METHOD: We used different forms of affect labeling (emotion ge

Symptomatic psychosis risk and physiological fluctuation in functional MRI data.

BACKGROUND: Physiological brain pulsations have been shown to play a critical role in maintaining interstitial homeostasis in the glymphatic brain clearance mechanism. We investigated whether psychotic symptomatology is related to the physiological variation of the human brain using fMRI. METHODS: The participants (N = 277) were from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986. Psychotic symptoms were evaluated with the Positive Symptoms Scale of the Structured Interview for Prodromal Syndromes (SIPS). We used the coefficient of variation of BOLD signal (CVBOLD) as a proxy for physiological brain

Relationship Between Physiological Parameters and Acute Coronary Syndrome in Patients Presenting to the Emergency Department With Undifferentiated Chest Pain.

UNLABELLED: The investigators of this study sought to examine whether abnormal physiological parameters are associated with increased risk for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with chest pain. METHODS: We used prospectively collected data on adult patients presenting with suspected ACS in 2 EDs in Australia and New Zealand. Trained research nurses collected physiological data including temperature, respiratory rate, heart rate, and systolic blood pressure (SBP) on presentation to the ED. The primary endpoint was ACS within 30 days of presen

Changes in coronary anatomy and physiology after heart transplantation.

Cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) is a progressive process involving the epicardial and microvascular coronary systems. The timing of the development of abnormalities in these 2 compartments and the correlation between changes in physiology and anatomy are undefined. The invasive evaluation of coronary artery anatomy and physiology with intravascular ultrasound, fractional flow reserve, coronary flow reserve, and the index of microcirculatory resistance (IMR) was performed in the left anterior descending coronary artery during 151 angiographic evaluations of asymptomatic heart transplant re

Physiological effects of heated humidifiers versus heat and moisture exchangers in adult ARDS patients receiving invasive mechanical ventilation: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: In acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), increased dead space with Heat and moisture exchangers (HMEs) may impair carbon dioxide elimination during lung-protective ventilation. To assess its impact, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: After registration with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD420261368917), PubMed, EMBASE, and Scopus were searched for studies of ARDS patients receiving IMV comparing HHs and HMEs. Random-effects meta-analyses of paired physiological outcomes were conducted using inverse-variance models, a

Prescribing Blood Flow-Restricted Cycling Using Rating of Perceived Exertion Balances the Physiological and Perceptual Demands in Young Healthy Adults.

To compare the physiological and perceptual responses during fixed-power and perceptually regulated cycling, both without and with blood flow restriction (CONPWR, BFRPWR, CONRPE and BFRRPE). Twelve recreationally active men cycled for 10 min at the power corresponding to the first ventilatory threshold or, for CONRPE and BFRRPE, the perceived exertion level reported during CONPWR. Blood flow restriction was set at 60% of estimated arterial occlusion pressure. Ventilatory measures and heart rate were averaged into 2-min blocks. Perceived exertion, effort, muscular discomfort and cuff pain were

Multimodal assessment of emotion regulation in children of parents with a mental illness.

Emotion regulation (ER) is a relevant transdiagnostic mechanism for mental health, involving cognitive, behavioral, and physiological processes. Children of parents with a mental illness (COPMI) are at increased risk for ER difficulties, yet the integration of state and trait ER assessments remains underexplored. This study employs a multimodal approach to assess ER in COPMI compared to children of parents without a mental illness (COPWMI). We examined trait ER via self-report in 195 children (96 COPMI/99 COPWMI) aged 4 - 16, cognitive state ER using an emotional Go/Nogo task in 243 children (

Effects of Angry Rumination and Distraction in Intimate Partner Violent Men.

Although the tendency to ruminate is related to the frequency of intimate partner violent (IPV) perpetration, it is unclear how IPV men react emotionally and physiologically during angry rumination. This study is the first to experimentally manipulate rumination and distraction with violent men. Using the rumination and distraction paradigm developed by Nolen-Hoeksema and Morrow, IPV (N = 87) and nonviolent (NV; N = 30) men underwent an anger induction and then were randomly assigned to either ruminate or distract. IPV men were hypothesized to experience increased effects of rumination compare

Autonomic Dysregulation in Child Social Anxiety Disorder: An Experimental Design Using CBT Treatment.

Models of social anxiety disorder (SAD) stress the relevance of physiological arousal. So far, limited research has been conducted in children with SAD in experimental stress designs. Thus, examining autonomic arousal, children with and without SAD completed a standardized social stressor (Trier Social Stress Test for Children-C; TSST-C). Pre-existing differences to healthy controls (HC) were expected to decrease after receiving cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). Children with SAD (n = 64) and HC children (n = 55) completed a TSST-C. Children with SAD participated in a second TSST-C after eithe

Speech is special: The stress effects of speech, noise, and silence during tasks requiring concentration.

Effects of noise on people depend on sound level but also on other sound properties. A systematic comparison of the stress effects of speech and noise with the same frequency content is missing. This study compared stress reactions under sound conditions speech (sound level 65 dB LAeq ), noise (65 dB), and silence (35 dB), all having similar relative frequency contents. Fifty-nine participants were exposed to one out of three sound conditions on average for 48 minutes while performing tasks requiring concentration. Acute physiological stress was estimated by measuring stress hormone concentrat

Physiological stress increases renal injury in eNOS-knockout mice.

African Americans have a fourfold greater likelihood of developing end-stage renal disease (ESRD) compared with Caucasians. It has been proposed that the increased prevalence may be explained by non-traditional factors such as environmental stress and psychosocial factors. In this study, we used infrequent running to exhaustion as a physiological stressor to mimic real life experiences, such walking up stairs when an elevator is malfunctioning or running to catch a bus, to study its effect on renal injury in a hypertensive mouse model (endothelial nitric oxide synthase-deficient mice; eNOS(-/-

Physiological signal entropy in patients with chronic respiratory disease: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) such as COPD and asthma have a substantial impact on patients and healthcare systems. Recent research on diagnosing and monitoring CRDs highlights the potential of continuous measurement of physiological parameters using nonlinear measures such as entropy analysis. Entropy measures the irregularity and complexity of physiological signals, reflecting the engagement of physiological control mechanisms. This systematic review examines the current evidence on changes in the entropy of physiological signals in CRDs. METHODS: The review follows Prefer
