The retrosigmoid approach for auditory brainstem implantation.

OBJECTIVE: To describe our experience with the retrosigmoid-transmeatal (RS-TM) approach in auditory brainstem implantation (ABI) as well as the anatomosurgical guidelines for this route. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review. SETTING: Ear, Nose, and Throat Department of the University of Verona. PATIENTS: Five patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) were operated on for vestibular schwannoma removal with ABI implantation from April 1997 to June 1999. The patients were four men and one woman, whose ages ranged from 22 to 37 years. The tumor sizes ranged from 12 to 30 mm. The records

[Phenotypic characterization of a DFNA6 family with low-frequency hearing loss].

BACKGROUND: Hereditary hearing impairment is a heterogeneous sensory defect with approximately two-thirds of all cases being nonsyndromic. Only two loci (DFNA1 and DFNA6/14/38) are associated with low frequency sensorineural nonsyndromic hearing impairment. DFNA6 was mapped to chromosome 4p16. Recessive mutations in the WFS1 gene are responsible for Wolfram syndrome; missense mutations inherited as an autosomal dominant result in low frequency sensorineural hearing impairment (LFSNHI). PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this study we analyzed the phenotype of a large Hungarian family with LFSNHI and li

Profile of auditory information-processing deficits in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia patients exhibit abnormalities in several different auditory event-related potential (ERP) measures. It is unclear how these abnormalities relate to each other, since multiple measures are rarely acquired from the same sample. This study addressed two related questions: 1) Are specific auditory ERP measures differentially impaired in schizophrenia? 2) Do abnormalities co-aggregate within the same patients? Nine auditory ERP measures were acquired in a single testing session from 23 schizophrenia patients and 22 healthy subjects. Hierarchical oblique factor analysis revealed that

[Cervicogenic hearing loss].

Existing investigations of cervical hearing disorders have been carried out predominantly in patients in whom those with vertebrobasilar insufficiencies (VBI) could not be distinguished from patients suffering from functional deficit of the upper cervical spine. Since two different syndromes exist, no statement can be made about cervical hearing disorders. That deafness can occur in VBI is uncontested. In contrast, there remains a dispute whether a "vertebragenic hearing disorder" exists. This latter disorder is believed accompanied by tinnitus, a feeling of ear pressure, otalgia and deafness

A Pilot Study to Evaluate a Residual Inhibition Technique in Hearing Aids for Suppression of Tinnitus.

Tinnitus acoustic therapy is defined as any use of sound where the intent is to alter the tinnitus perception and/or the reactions to tinnitus in a clinically beneficial way. The parameters of sound that may cause beneficial effects, however, are currently only theorized with limited data supporting their effectiveness. Residual inhibition is the temporary suppression or elimination of tinnitus that is usually observed following appropriate auditory stimulation. Our pilot study investigated the effects of a therapeutic acoustic stimulus that was individually customized to maximize residual inh

Applicability of the real ear measurement for audiological intervention of tinnitus.

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus is present in a large part of chronic health complaints, and it is considered a public health problem injurious to the individual's quality of life. Considering the increase of the world population associated with an increase of life expectancy, tinnitus remains a cause for medical concern, since during aging the occurrence of auditory impairments due to the deterioration of the peripheral auditory structures and central impairs the quality of life. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to analyze the applicability of real ear measurements for audiological interve

Intact sensorimotor rhythm abilities but altered audiovisual integration in cochlear implant users.

Perception of rhythm significantly impacts various aspects of daily life, including engaging with music, discerning speech prosody nuances, and coordinating physical activities like walking and sports. Numerous studies in cognitive sciences have highlighted that human rhythmic synchronization is more precise when responding to auditory rhythmic stimuli than to visual ones when the timing cues are identical. However, deaf individuals were shown to display a heightened proficiency in synchronizing their movements with visual timing cues, outperforming hearing controls (HC). Furthermore, it was d

[Experimental study of compression by Herbert screw in carpal scaphoid fracture].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The purpose of this experimental work was to obtain a radiographical assessment of the effect of the compression achieved with the Herbert screw due to its different thread diameters by comparing the real and expected reduction of interfragment gap (IFG) on cadaver bones. To better understand and define the limits of this "self-compressing" effect and to study the usefulness of screw sizes smaller than the scaphoid, we measured the maximal and mean reduction of IFG without using the instrumentation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twelve scaphoids were obtained from fresh cadavers

Impairment of perinatal hypoxia-ischemia to the preterm brainstem.

Hypoxia-ischemia is a major perinatal problem that results in severe damage to the newborn brain. This study assessed functional integrity of the brainstem at term in preterm infants after perinatal hypoxia-ischemia to shed light on the influence of hypoxia-ischemia on the preterm brainstem. We recruited sixty-eight preterm infants after perinatal hypoxia-ischemia, ranging in gestation 28-35 weeks. Brainstem evoked response was studied at term age (37-42 weeks postconceptional age) with 91-910/s clicks using the maximum length sequence technique. Compared with healthy preterm infants, the pret

Long-term Acoustic Effects of Gender-Affirming Voice Training in Transgender Women.

OBJECTIVES: One role of a speech-language pathologist (SLP) is to help transgender clients in developing a healthy, gender-congruent communication. Transgender women frequently approach SLPs to train their voices to sound more feminine, however, long-term acoustic effects of the training needs to be rigorously examined in effectiveness studies. The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term effects (follow-up 1: 3months and follow-up 2: 1year after last session) of gender-affirming voice training for transgender women, in terms of acoustic parameters. STUDY DESIGN: This study was a ra

Avatar-Based Patient Monitoring With Peripheral Vision: A Multicenter Comparative Eye-Tracking Study.

BACKGROUND: Continuous patient monitoring has been described by the World Health Organization as extremely important and is widely used in anesthesia, intensive care medicine, and emergency medicine. However, current state-of-the-art number- and waveform-based monitoring does not ideally support human users in acquiring quick, confident interpretations with low cognitive effort, and there are additional problematic aspects such as alarm fatigue. We developed a visualization technology (Visual Patient), specifically designed to help caregivers gain situation awareness quickly, which presents vi

Screening for auditory processing performance in primary school children.

BACKGROUND: A deficit in the processing of auditory information may underlie problems in understanding speech in the presence of background noise, degraded speech, and in following spoken instructions. Children with auditory processing disorders are challenged in the classroom because of ambient noise levels and maybe at risk for learning disabilities. PURPOSE: 1) Set up and execute screening protocol for auditory processing performance (APP) in primary school children. 2) Construct database for APP in the classroom. 3) Set critical limits for deviant performance. Our hypothesis is that scree

Observational Study of Facial Rotation Patterns.

BACKGROUND: Facial asymmetry is commonly observed during visual facial assessment and significantly influences aesthetic perceptions and emotional expressions. Although minor asymmetries are often seen as contributing to individual uniqueness and can be addressed with cosmetic injectables, pronounced disparities can necessitate medical intervention, particularly in fields such as orthodontics, facial, and reconstructive surgery. Pitch, roll, and yaw rotations, limited to the maxilla-mandibular complex movements have been observed. Facial rotation, as part of the facial ageing process, was prev
