AIM: Compare itraconazole alone, fluconazole combined with ketoconazole and ketoconazole in the treatment of patients with pityriasis versicolor.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A group of 240 pityriasis versicolor patients (confirmed with KOH and culture) were classified into 3 groups: Fluconazole 300 mg a week and 2% ketoconazole foam twice a week for 2 weeks (Category I), Itraconazole 200 mg daily for one week (category II); Ketoconazole 2% foam daily for 2 weeks (Category 3). Clinical (colour of macule, scale, pruritus) and mycological assessment were done after 4 weeks of therapy.

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis versicolor is a frequent pathology in Paraguay; however, its epidemiology is unknown.
AIM: To determine the frequency of Malassezia species causing pityriasis versicolor and the epidemiological characteristics of the population.
METHODS: Samples from patients with a presumptive diagnosis of pityriasis versicolor were collected. Laboratory diagnosis was carried out by fresh examination and culture in modified Dixon agar and chromogenic Chromagar Malassezia®, incubated at 32° C, and identification by macro and micromorphological features, biochemical and physiological te…

Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a rare inflammatory skin disease that affects men and women of all ages and also children. The clinical appearance of PRP is highly variable, as is the individual prognosis. Therefore, stratifying PRP into six disease subtypes represents a first step to personalized medicine for this rare inflammatory skin disease. The next step should be to associate specific therapeutic strategies with these subtypes of PRP. However, no randomized, controlled trials on the treatment of PRP have been performed. Consequently, the actual treatment algorithm for PRP will be base…

Pityriasis rubra pilaris is an inflammatory dermatologic disorder of unknown cause and often confounded with psoriasis. It is characterised by hyperkeratotic follicular papules, scaly erythematous plaques, palmoplantar keratoderma, and a progression to generalised erythroderma. Here, we report the case of a 68-year-old man with pityriasis rubra pilaris, who was successfully treated with ixekizumab, an interleukin-17A inhibitor.

Pityriasis lichenoides is a rare inflammatory dermatosis occurring in young subjects. It evolves into rashes on the trunk and the limbs which regress spontaneously. We here report a particular case of pityriasis lichenoides whose diagnosis was adjusted due to the scar appearance of the lesions. The patient was treated with cyclin and phototherapy, with a favorable outcome.

Many clinical trials have been conducted on the treatment of pityriasis rosea (PR). Our aim was to establish a position statement for the management of adults with PR based on the best available evidence. We searched PubMed for all reports on randomized controlled trials for the treatment of PR published in the past 30 years. We retrieved 14 articles reporting randomized controlled trials, and found five which met our quality requirements for in-depth analyses. Erythromycin was found in a well-conducted triple-blind study to cast significant impacts on clinical outcomes. However, adverse gastr…

Pityriasis rosea is an acute self-limiting papulosquamous skin disorder of unknown etiology. Although pityriasis rosea is a common dermatologic disorder, information regarding the epidemiology of the disease in India is limited because of inadequate studies. The incidence and presentation of pityriasis rosea varies from one geographical region to another. The objective was to study the various clinical patterns of the disease and epidemiologic factors influencing its occurrence. A cross-sectional study on the clinicoepidemiologic pattern of pityriasis rosea was conducted. A detailed history of…

Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a rare, chronic erythematous squamous disorder of unknown etiology. It has been found in association with several autoimmune diseases, including thyroiditis, myositis, myasthenia gravis and vitiligo. Herein we report a case of systemic sclerosis in a patient with classic adult pityriasis rubra pilaris. A 38 year old woman with classic adult type 1 pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) developed progressive skin thickening of the trunk, face, upper and lower extremities after 2 years of PRP treatment with topical emollients and steroids. Clinical examination and immun…

Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a rare group of hyperkeratotic, papulosquamous diseases that can be acquired or inherited. Cases of PRP associated with malignancy have been rarely reported. We report a case of 46-year-old man who presented with rapidly progressing PRP as a possible initial cutaneous symptom of a previously undiagnosed laryngeal carcinoma. Microlaryngoscopy was performed because of the patient's hoarseness, and this revealed leucoplakia on the left vocal cord. Histopathological examination led to the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma in situ. After surgical treatment, the …

BACKGROUND: The association of human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) and HHV-7 with pityriasis rosea suggests that systemic drugs directed against HHV may hasten recovery of patients with pityriasis rosea.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to verify the efficacy of oral acyclovir in the treatment of pityriasis rosea.
METHODS: Eighty-seven consecutive patients were treated for 1 week with either oral acyclovir (800 mg 5 times daily) or placebo. In all patients, the time of lesion clearing and the number of new lesions appearing during treatment were recorded.
RESULTS: On the 14th day of treatme…

Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a rare group of hyperkeratotic, papulosquamous disease that can be acquired or inherited. There have been reported cases of rheumatologic associations, mainly arthritis and dermatomyositis. In this review article, we will explore the clinical presentation and classification, rheumatologic associations and treatment modalities of PRP. In addition, we will also report a case of PRP with seronegative arthritis.
