The effect of selection on allele frequencies and diversity in wheat (Triticum aestivum).

Advancing wheat lines through stages of testing resulted in large genome changes. Consistent changes across cohorts and selection stages were noted though most changes appeared specific. Diversity was lost within a cohort, primarily at the last stage of advancement, though diversity across cohorts was not greatly impacted. The results can be used to develop informed crossing strategies. Effective selection increases the frequency of favorable alleles but can reduce genetic variation. The extent of allele frequency changes (AFC) that occur as wheat lines are advanced through stages of testing i

Distinct changes of taste quality and metabolite profile in different tomato varieties revealed by LC-MS metabolomics.

Breeding of tomato varieties based on phenotypic traits can potentially lead to a decline in taste and nutritional values, thereby impacting consumer acceptance. However, taste is an intrinsic characteristic of tomatoes. Its decoding requires the identification of crucial compounds and the associated metabolic pathways implicated in taste development and formation. In this study, the taste parameter differences of four tomato varieties were distinguished using an electronic tongue. The content of organic acids and free amino acids, which were closely associated with taste variations, was quant

Relationship between residual feed intake and digestive traits of fattening bulls fed grass silage- or maize silage-based diets.

Several studies tried to identify digestive determinants of individual variation in feed efficiency between fattening bulls, because of their importance for breeding and management strategies. Most studies focused on single traits or single diet. Little is known about diet-dependent differences in digestive determinants and on their relative importance in distinguishing divergent residual feed intake (RFI) bulls. This research aimed (i) to identify digestive traits that differed between bulls diverging in RFI and fed a maize silage- or a grass silage-based diets; (ii) to highlight the relation

Supplementing Ca salts of soybean oil via low-moisture molasses-based blocks to improve reproductive performance and overall productivity of beef cows.

This experiment evaluated reproductive and productive responses of beef cows receiving self-fed low-moisture blocks (LMB) enriched or not with Ca salts of soybean oil (CSSO) throughout the breeding season. Non-pregnant, suckled multiparous Angus-influenced cows were assigned to a fixed-time artificial insemination (AI) protocol (day -10 to 0) followed by natural service (day 15-70). Cows were managed in 12 groups (46 ± 4 cows/group) maintained in individual pastures, and groups received LMB enriched with 25 % (as-fed basis) of CSSO or ground corn (CON) from day - 10 to 100. Both treatments wer

Determination of volatile profiles of woodland strawberry (Fragaria vesca) during fruit maturation by HS-SPME GC-MS.

BACKGROUND: Aroma is an important agronomic trait for strawberries, and the improvement of fruit flavor is a key goal in current strawberry breeding programs. Fragaria vesca (also known as woodland strawberry) has become an excellent model plant with exquisite flavor, a small genome size and a short life cycle. Thus, the comprehensive identification of fruit volatiles and their accumulation pattern of F. vesca strawberries are very important and necessary to the fruit aroma study. This study examined the volatile profile changes from the fruits of three F. vesca genotypes during maturation usi

Phloem-exudate proteome analysis of response to insect brown plant-hopper in rice.

Brown plant-hopper (Nilaparvata lugens Stål, BPH), one of the most devastating agricultural insect pests of rice throughout Asia, ingests nutrients from rice sieve tubes and causes a dramatic yield loss. Planting resistant variety is an efficient and economical way to control this pest. Understanding the mechanisms of host resistance is extremely valuable for molecular design of resistant rice variety. Here, we used an iTRAQ-based quantitative proteomics approach to perform analysis of protein expression profiles in the phloem exudates of BPH-resistant and susceptible rice plants following BPH

Assessment of metabolic variability and diversity present in leaf, peel and pulp tissue of diploid and triploid Musa spp.

Banana (Musa spp.) plants produce many health promoting compounds in leaf, peel and pulp. For a robust metabolic analysis of these tissues, leaf at five developmental stages were compared to assess suitable sampling practices. Results confirmed that the common sampling practise of leaf 3 is applicable for metabolic comparisons. The developed work flow was applied to analyse the metabolite diversity present in 18 different Musa varieties, providing baseline levels of metabolites in leaf, peel and pulp tissue. Correlation analysis was then used to ascertain whether similar trends can be detected

Biotechnologically generating 'super chickpea' for food and nutritional security.

Chickpea productivity is affected by various constraints that are biotic (Helicoverpa, Aphids, Callosobruchus, Bromus and Orobanche) and abiotic (drought and salinity). In addition, the grains of this legume are deficient in sulfur amino acids, methionine and cysteine. The possibilities for genetic improvement by marker-assisted breeding and selection approaches are limited in chickpeas due to their sexually incompatible gene pool. Transgenic chickpeas expressing either the cry1Ac/b or the cry2Aa gene and the bean α-amylase inhibitor gene are resistant to Helicoverpa and bruchids, respectively

Ecology and Evolutionary Dynamics of the A-Strain Maize Streak Virus and the Decade-Long Strategies Targeting Streak-Resistant Maize.

The A-strain maize streak virus (MSV-A; genus Mastrevirus, family Geminiviridae) is a single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) virus that severely constrains the production of maize in sub-Saharan Africa and other places where its insect vectors thrive. In this review, we discuss the ecology- and genomics-driven evolution of this economically important virus and strategies targeting streak resistance in maize. Evolution of MSV-A is largely driven by the interplay of mutation, recombination and selective forces that may sustain fitness and result in host adaptation. In the last decade, research efforts, inc

The OsRhoGAP2-OsRAC5 complex regulates rice seed germination via modulating aleurone layer development and α-amylase activity.

Seed germination is a key agronomic trait that underpins seedling establishment in rice. Here, we show that the OsRhoGAP2-OsRAC5 protein complex positively regulates rice seed germination through modulating aleurone layer development and α-amylase activity. This study uncovers the role of Rho-GTPase signaling in controlling cereal seed germination and identifies candidate genes for molecular breeding of rice. The aleurone layer (AL) is a pivotal tissue controlling cereal seed germination, which governs hydrolytic enzyme synthesis and endosperm reserve remobilization in rice. Rho small GTPases

The dual-function protein complex SnRK2.6-WRKY70 synergistically enhances the tanshinones biosynthesis and drought stress adaptation in Salvia miltiorrhiza.

Long-term domestication and cultivation have led to the differentiation of Salvia miltiorrhiza genetic resources in different regions of China, accompanied by differences in the accumulation of pharmacological components represented by tanshinones in the roots. Tanshinone, as a key biomarker with significant therapeutic effects on cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, has become the primary target for improvement in S. miltiorrhiza breeding. It is particularly important to deeply analyze the differentiation of tanshinones biosynthetic pathways in S. miltiorrhiza of different ecotypes, s

MutMap Reveals a Structural Deletion at the Chalcone Synthase Locus Controlling Black Seed Coat in a Gamma-Irradiated Vietnamese Soybean Mutant.

Black soybean is an important functional crop valued for its high anthocyanin content and associated health benefits, attracting increasing interest in plant breeding and mutation-based approaches to enhance its nutritional and agronomic traits. Here, we investigated a DT26 black seed-coat mutant (DT26BS) derived from the Vietnamese cultivar DT26 following gamma irradiation. Genetic analysis of F2 populations indicated that the phenotype is controlled by a single recessive mutation, with additional epistatic interactions observed in other genetic backgrounds. MutMap analysis based on whole-gen…

The Integrated Management of Sugar-Beet Soilborne Diseases Through Rhizosphere Microbiome Strategies: A Critical Review of Agronomic Evidence and Application Gaps.

Soilborne diseases caused by Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. betae, Aphanomyces cochlioides, and Pythium spp. constrain sugar-beet production worldwide, with yield losses exceeding 50% in severely affected fields. These pathogens frequently co-occur, yet most biological control and microbiome studies address them individually, and recommendations from model crops often fail to translate to sugar beet's distinctive root biology and rotation systems. This critical review synthesises evidence on the rhizosphere microbiome as a plant protection resource, organising the literature by

Screening tomato genotypes for early-stage drought tolerance using polyethylene glycol-induced osmotic stress.

BACKGROUND: Drought stress is a major abiotic constraint to tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) production, particularly at early developmental stages. Screening genotypes under controlled osmotic stress is crucial for identifying drought-tolerant cultivars. This study evaluated five tomato genotypes Khumal 2, Monoprecos, NGRCO9569, NGRCO9571, and Srijana for germination and seedling performance under polyethylene glycol (PEG)-induced drought stress to identify resilient candidates for breeding programs. RESULTS: A completely randomized design (CRD) experiment was conducted under three PEG level

Non-host defense response in a novel Arabidopsis-Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri pathosystem.

Citrus canker, caused by Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri (Xcc), is one of the most destructive diseases of citrus. Progress of breeding citrus canker-resistant varieties is modest due to limited resistant germplasm resources and lack of candidate genes for genetic manipulation. The objective of this study is to establish a novel heterologous pathosystem between Xcc and the well-established model plant Arabidopsis thaliana for defense mechanism dissection and resistance gene identification. Our results indicate that Xcc bacteria neither grow nor decline in Arabidopsis, but induce multiple defens
