Rice responses to silicon addition at different Fe status and growth pH. Evaluation of ploidy changes.

It has been described in rice that Si only plays a physical barrier that does not allow Fe to enter cell apoplast, causing Fe deficiency responses even under Fe sufficiency growth conditions. Most of the conclusions were attained at acidic pH, but rice is also grown at calcareous conditions, which especially induce Fe deficiency in the plants. In this study, we assay the effect of Si in rice suffering both Fe deficiency and sufficiency in hydroponics at two pHs (5.5 and 7.5). Plant biometric parameters, ROS concentration, enzymatic activities, and total phenolic compounds, as well as ploidy le

A Roadmap for the Molecular Farming of Viral Glycoprotein Vaccines: Engineering Glycosylation and Glycosylation-Directed Folding.

Immunization with recombinant glycoprotein-based vaccines is a promising approach to induce protective immunity against viruses. However, the complex biosynthetic maturation requirements of these glycoproteins typically necessitate their production in mammalian cells to support their folding and post-translational modification. Despite these clear advantages, the incumbent costs and infrastructure requirements with this approach can be prohibitive in developing countries, and the production scales and timelines may prove limiting when applying these production systems to the control of pandemi

A single-nucleus atlas of ligular region uncovers brassinosteroid-driven cell fate transitions controlling leaf angle in maize.

The ligular region is a critical determinant of leaf angle (LA) and plant architecture in maize, yet its developmental mechanisms remain largely unknown. In this study, we generate a comprehensive single-nucleus RNA-seq atlas of the maize ligular region, spanning from leaf primordium through the preligule band (PLB) to the mature stage. By integrating cellular and transcriptomic analyses, we reveal that brassinosteroid (BR) inhibits cell division in the adaxial division zone while promoting elongation in adaxial hypodermal cells. Consequently, BR treatment leads to ectopic emergence of the aur

Single cell-derived multicellular meristem: insights into male-to-hermaphrodite conversion and de novo meristem formation in Ceratopteris.

Land plants alternate between asexual sporophytes and sexual gametophytes. Unlike seed plants, ferns develop free-living gametophytes. Gametophytes of the model fern Ceratopteris exhibit two sex types: hermaphrodites with pluripotent meristems and males lacking meristems. In the absence of the pheromone antheridiogen, males convert to hermaphrodites by forming de novo meristems, although the mechanisms remain unclear. Using long-term time-lapse imaging and computational analyses, we captured male-to-hermaphrodite conversion at single-cell resolution and reconstructed the lineage and division a

Combining -Omics to Unravel the Impact of Copper Nutrition on Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) Stem Metabolism.

Copper can be found in the environment at concentrations ranging from a shortage up to the threshold of toxicity for plants, with optimal growth conditions situated in between. The plant stem plays a central role in transferring and distributing minerals, water and other solutes throughout the plant. In this study, alfalfa is exposed to different levels of copper availability, from deficiency to slight excess, and the impact on the metabolism of the stem is assessed by a non-targeted proteomics study and by the expression analysis of key genes controlling plant stem development. Under copper d

Chromosome aberrations in employees from fossil-fueled and nuclear-power plants.

Chromosome aberrations were scored in 59 persons from fossil-fueled plants, in 89 persons from nuclear-power plants and in 23 controls. A significant increase in acentric chromosome fragments and dicentric chromosomes compared to the control group was observed in both types of workers. Moreover, the number of abnormal cells was significantly greater in workers of conventional plants than in those of nuclear-power plants. When adjusted for loss of lymphocytes according to a half-life of 3 years, this difference was also significant for the number of dicentric chromosomes observed. A significant

The prospective role of plant products in radiotherapy of cancer: a current overview.

Treatment of cancer often requires exposure to radiation, which has several limitations involving non-specific toxicity toward normal cells, reducing the efficacy of treatment. Efforts are going on to find chemical compounds which would effectively offer protection to the normal tissues after radiation exposure during radiotherapy of cancer. In this regard, plant-derived compounds might serve as "leads" to design ideal radioprotectors/radiosensitizers. This article reviews some of the recent findings on prospective medicinal plants, phytochemicals, and their analogs, based on both in vitro and

Ploidy and hybridity effects on leaf size, cell size and related genes expression in triploids, diploids and their parents in Populus.

Cell-size enlargement plays a pivotal role in increasing the leaf size of triploid poplar, and polyploidization could change leaf shape. ABP1 was highly expressed in triploid plants and positively related to cell size. In the plant kingdom, the leaf is the most important energy production organ, and polyploidy often exhibits a "Gigas" effect on leaf size, which benefits agriculture and forestry. However, little is known regarding the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the leaf size superiority of polyploid woody plants. In the present study, the leaf area and abaxial epidermal cells

An Arabidopsis Cell Culture With Weak Circadian Rhythms Under Constant Light Compared With Constant Dark Can Be Rescued by ELF3.

Callus and cell suspension culture techniques are valuable tools in plant biotechnology and are widely used in fundamental and applied research. For studies in callus and cell suspension cultures to be relevant, it is essential to know if the underlying biochemistry is similar to intact plants. This study examined the expression of core circadian genes in Arabidopsis callus from the cell suspension named AT2 and found that the circadian rhythms were impaired. The circadian waveforms were like intact plants in the light/dark cycles, but the circadian expression in the AT2 callus became weaker i

Functions of Melatonin during Postharvest of Horticultural Crops.

Melatonin, a tryptophan-derived molecule, is endogenously generated in animal, plant, fungal and prokaryotic cells. Given its antioxidant properties, it is involved in a myriad of signaling functions associated with various aspects of plant growth and development. In higher plants, melatonin (Mel) interacts with plant regulators such as phytohormones, as well as reactive oxygen and nitrogen species including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). It shows great potential as a biotechnological tool to alleviate biotic and abiotic stress, to delay senescence and

Interplay between gasotransmitters and potassium is a K+ey factor during plant response to abiotic stress.

Carbon monoxide (CO), nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are gasotransmitters known for their roles in plant response to (a)biotic stresses. The crosstalk between these gasotransmitters and potassium ions (K+) has received considerable attention in recent years, particularly due to the dual role of K+ as an essential mineral nutrient and a promoter of plant tolerance to abiotic stress. This review brings together what it is known about the interplay among NO, CO, H2S and K+ in plants with focus on the response to high salinity. Some findings obtained for plants under water deficit an

Heterologous Expression Systems for Plant Defensin Expression: Examples of Success and Pitfalls.

Defensins are a superfamily of antimicrobial peptides, present in vertebrates, invertebrates, fungi and plants, suggesting that they appeared prior to the divergence in eukaryotes. The destitution of toxicity to mammalian cells of plant defensins has led to a new research ground, i.e., their potential medical use against human infectious diseases. Isolating defensins from natural sources, like plant tissues, can be time-consuming, labor intensive and usually present low yields. Strategies for large-scale production of purified active defensins have been employed using heterologous expression s

Current status of viral expression systems in plants and perspectives for oral vaccines development.

During the last 25 years, the technology to produce recombinant vaccines in plant cells has evolved from modest proofs of the concept to viable technologies adopted by some companies due to significant improvements in the field. Viral-based expression strategies have importantly contributed to this success owing to high yields, short production time (which is in most cases free of tissue culture steps), and the implementation of confined processes for production under GMPs. Herein the distinct expression systems based on viral elements are analyzed. This review also presents the outlook on how…

Barley as a production platform for oral vaccines in sustainable fish aquaculture.

Vaccination is the most effective measure to prevent disease outbreaks in fish aquaculture, with oral vaccine administration emerging as the most practical approach. However, oral vaccines face a notable limitation due to insufficient stimulation of the complex gut-associated lymphoid tissue caused by factors such as vaccine degradation, poor absorption, and recognition by the immune cells. An innovative solution to these limitations lies in the plant-based production of recombinant vaccines. Plant cells enable the production and targeted storage of recombinant vaccines in specific cell organe…

Comparative Wound Healing Processes in Plants and Animals: Bioinspired Strategies for Advancing Regenerative Medicine.

Wound healing is a fundamental biological process essential to maintaining structural integrity and survival across both plant and animal life. Despite the profound evolutionary distance separating these kingdoms, wound healing provides one of those momentous occasions when these biological universes collide, revealing significant evolutionary parallels in the core mechanisms of healing, despite clear molecular and physiological differences. However, two challenges have hindered systematic cross-kingdom comparisons. First, unlike animal wound healing, the major phases of plant wound healing ha
